Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the official red band trailer for the film “House Party,” a raunchy, genre-bending comedy adventure co-produced by basketball legend LeBron James.
Starring actors Jacob Latimore and Tosin Cole, the trailer gives glimpses at some of the hilarity and mayhem to come in the upcoming release, including a scene where the duo find themselves in James’ house, talking to a hologram the athlete created to shower him in words of affirmation.
“He got a hologram of himself, just to give him compliments?” Latimore quips in the trailer.
The feature is a remake of a 1990 comedy by the same title, though the plot has been adapted for a new, modern audience. As opposed to the two leads being high-schoolers in search of a fun night, Latimore and Cole play two aspiring club promoters who decide to host a massive party to distract from their financial troubles after being...

New Line’s reboot of House Party, which was originally supposed to go to HBO Max, but was given a theatrical release, will now open on Jan. 13, 2023 rather than Dec. 9, 2022.
Bad news: That shifts one wide release out this year, however, two weekends before Christmas was a desert last year with Steven Spielberg’s ultimate Oscar winning West Side Story flopping out of the gate. Good news is that it puts House Party on a prime moviegoing holiday weekend, and next to Blumhouse/Universal’s horror title M3GAN. Pre-pandemic, pop event tentpoles like Jumanji: Next Level and Into the Spiderverse have proved to open and leg out into the New Year. Warner Bros. has the family pic Wonka in the Dec. 15 spot for 2023, prior to Christmas.
Calmatic directs off a screenplay by Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover. Tosin Cole, Jacob Latimore, Karen Obilom and DC Young Fly star. LeBron James...

Exclusive: New Line’s reimagination of its 1990 cult classic House Party for HBO Max is restarting production Monday night after closing down briefly last week out of caution for a positive Covid case on the set.
The County of Los Angeles Public Health reported that there were nine positive cases of Covid on House Party, but Deadline has learned that most of those were for people who never arrived to set — largely extras who were tested during pre-employment. While there was not a great need to shut down production on the feature from award-winning music video director Calmatic, given how it was only one staffer affected, the House Party production did so anyway out of an abundance of caution. We hear that the House Party crew and talent have already been tested, with no positive cases, and can safely proceed to set.

Stacey Abrams has been tapped to receive the inaugural Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice award as part of the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.
The new award named for Belafonte — the Emmy-winning actor, activist and civil rights leader — is intended to recognize individuals who have used storytelling and the arts to enact change in their communities.
Abrams, in addition to her work as a politician and voting rights activist, also produced last year’s gripping documentary “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” which illuminated America’s history of voter suppression. As such, Tribeca announced that Abrams will be honored for her “outstanding leadership, service and commitment to fighting against injustices through her work as a political leader, voting rights activist and novelist.”
“We are proud to salute the brilliant and inspiring actor, activist and friend, Harry Belafonte with this award created in his honor,’” said Tribeca Chief Content Officer, Paula Weinstein.

Exclusive: For the first time ever a film festival will overlap the Bogota Audiovisual Market (Bam) in July as Colombia’s film chiefs look to turn the summer corridor into a creative and business platform for the country’s booming film industry.
IndieBo co-founders Paola Turbay and Juan Carvajal have moved from last year’s inaugural September weekend slot to July 16-26.
The sixth annual Bam, managed by the Bogota Chamber Of Commerce and national body Proimágenes Colombia, runs from July 13-17.

There are few music personalities as colorful, wild, outrageous, and, well, funky as George Clinton. The man who gave the world Parliament and Funkandelic, and has made generations of listeners get up and shake it, is coming to New York City, and we want you to be there. On Monday, Clinton will appear at the Museum Of The Moving Image to present a screening of the 1994 HBO special "Cosmic Slop." It's a controversial triptych directed by Reginald Hudlin, Warrington Hudlin, and Kevin Rodney Sullivan. Based on the short story "The Space Traders" by Derrick Bell, it imagines a future where extraterrestrials promise the United States untold riches...if they hand over all the black people in the country. The screening will be followed by a talk with Clinton, who just released the memoir "Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain't That Funkin' Kinda Hard on You?," along with a book signing.

Fist and Sword is the Museum of the Moving Image's ongoing popular series of contemporary and classic martial arts and action movies, curated by, none other than, Mr Warrington Hudlin. "The martial arts film is the world's most popular cinematic genre. There were once at least half a dozen cinemas in New York City where we could regularly see these films. Alas, the Sun Sing Theatre, the Music Palace, the Pagoda Theater, the Rosemary Theatre, the Canal Street Cinema, and the Bijou Theatre have all closed their doors. This series at Museum of the Moving Image is reconstituting this community of film enthusiasts and allows us to once again enjoy these films...

Congratulations to Ms. Octavia Spencer for winning the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for The Help (2011). I thoroughly enjoyed her on screen passion, humor and audacity. Her irreverence shimmered like glitter, her rage took on an artistic flair, and the relationship she formed with another "outsider" in the film was telling of her humanity beyond the boundaries of race so clearly defined and articulated in the film. This week's Oscar win for Spencer, however, will no doubt reinforce and fuel the controversy about what kind of black images get supported and celebrated in Hollywood. Ms. Spencer's character, Minny Jackson, was as spunky, fearless, and charming as Hattie McDaniel's Mammy was in Gone With the Wind (1939), but therein lies the issue. James McBride articulated the problem in his essay "On Being A Maid" in this way: "On Jan. 24 President Obama, our first African American president,...

Since we’re screening the film tonight, I thought I’d again share my review, which I originally posted back in April, after seeing the it at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here ya go…
So there I was, at the premiere of Thomas Ikimi’s taut thriller, Legacy, sitting about 6 rows from the stage, anxious to screen the film, and none other than Armond White walks past me, taking a seat a few rows ahead. If you’ve been reading this blog over the last year, you’ll know why this is worth mentioning
Also seated close by was Warrington Hudlin, who seemed to enjoy the film, unlike Armond White, who got up and walked out about 30 minutes in. I didn’t see him return! Obviously, I can’t say why he walked out; maybe he had to use the bathroom, and upon returning, took one of the seats in the rear,...

This is something I overheard yesterday, at the Black cinema conference I attended at Nyu, but I haven’t been able to find anything on it via web searches.
Seated two rows behind me in the auditorium was an older gentleman I didn’t immediately recognize, nor knew his name. During one of the breaks between panels, I heard him speaking to someone I thought was Warrington Hudlin (I’m not 100% on that; however, Hudlin was present for the event, and I can recognize the man’s voice) about a film he’s producing next, in response to a query from Hudlin.
The gentleman said he was working on a “big-budget” project with Charles Burnett, scheduled to start shooting later this year, and that Ruby Dee and S. Epatha Merkerson are already attached to star, although they weren’t the only names in the cast. Those were the only names I immediately recognized.

Would anyone like to check out a really cool, fun science-fiction movie? You could see The Terminator, Forbidden Planet, or 2001: A Space Odyssey -- or, as an alternative, you might consider watching House Party, the 1990 bubblegum hip-hop teen flick that I reviewed, 20 years ago this week, in EW. It takes place in a world so wildly removed from our own that there are moments when the whole film seems to be crying out for its own mockingly jaw-dropped and affectionate VH1 nostalgia special. Look, there's the young Martin Lawrence, hording a DJ record collection and cutting up in a pork-pie hat.

When writer-director Tom Kalin brought his first feature, "Swoon," to the Independent Feature Project's 1991 Independent Feature Film Market, he recalls attending "a charming, homespun affair" with his fellow producers, Christine Vachon and James Schamus. While there, a three-minute reel of "Swoon's" best images and moments at the market captured the attention of acquisitions execs from Fine Line and PBS' "American Playhouse." As a result, Kalin headed off to Sundance the following January with the film presold and on its way to being viewed as a milestone of "new queer cinema."That was then. Today, the Big Apple's Ifp market celebrates its 30th anniversary with a new name -- Independent Film Week, running Sept. 14-19 -- and is a mix of old visions and new strategies. Through the years, however, Ifp's goal has remained consistent: to open doors and create possibilities for aspiring filmmakers with plenty of talent but little money and few connections.
