As the most followed woman on Instagram with a staggering 429 million followers, Selena Gomez has never been much concerned with social media success.
“I’ve never really cared about that stuff,” Gomez said at Universal Music Group and Thrive Global’s Music & Health Conference on Tuesday afternoon. “I suppose I’m grateful for the platform, and I would love to continue to use it for what I’m able to do, but numbers are just numbers.”
Rather, she’s well aware of the responsibility that comes with such a far-reaching platform. In her position, Gomez has heard from several fans about how her work has helped them through extremely difficult times. “It can be a little heavy,” she continued. “I feel for people, and I think that’s what kind of keeps me in check, to be honest. This is a dark moment for frazzled members of the writing fraternity.
Picketers in Hollywood and New York fear a prolonged standoff gripping film and TV. Also troubling, their colleagues in digital media are patching together their résumés as Vice Media and BuzzFeed prepare for crash landings. Will others follow?
Even a digital zealot like Ben Smith sees the moment as “a humbling experience.” His new book, titled Traffic, vividly revisits the picaresque adventures of the “muckrakers, dweebs and wing nuts” who set out to revolutionize legacy journalism. Some became at once rich and unemployed.
The New York Times liked Smith’s book, even though he quit that paper to start yet another digital adventure called Semafor — its fate still to be determined.
Here’s the irony: While Smith and his social media colleagues are making lots of noise for their next adventures, their colleagues in film and TV are frozen in silence.

For fans of Showtime’s drama Billions, the upcoming Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber may familiar in more ways than one – from the story of a striving entrepreneur looking to shake up their industry, to some of the talent that appears throughout the second. During a TCA panel on Wednesday, executive producers Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Beth Schacter said that they also felt the similarities upon depicting the rise of Uber for Showtime.
“Our voice is our voice, and that’s not an intentional thing,” said Koppelman. “Everybody who does this for a while…[is] working from the place that they’re most connected to.”
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Uma Thurman and Kyle Chandler, Showtime’s Super Pumped tells the story of the ride-sharing company that stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences. The series is based...

“There are two sides to Travis Kalanick, and I wanted to play both of them,” says Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who stars as the Uber founder and CEO in Super Pumped, the tense, fast-moving new Showtime drama that charts the “bad boy of tech”‘s rise and fall. As the actor details, the series unflinchingly shows Kalanick’s unethical behavior, but in playing him he wanted to go deeper and ask, “What are his strengths? Why is he so successful?” He talked to many people who knew him and discovered that he had a magnetic, optimistic side that allowed him to rally the best people around him. That included brilliant board members. One was entrepreneur Arianna Huffington (Uma Thurman). The actress prepared by listening to Huffington on YouTube, Ted Talks, media shows, and other sources, “for hours and hours.” Another, venture capitalist Bill Gurley (Kyle Chandler) faced a constant, “uphill battle,” Chandler reveals.

What do you get when you mix Manhattan district attorneys, corrupt billionaires, and Silicon Valley unicorns? Well, apparently that all adds up to Quentin Tarantino.
The “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” auteur signed on to narrate Showtime’s limited series “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” premiering February 26 — and that’s mostly because of his love of co-creators David Levien and Brian Koppelman’s work on “Billions.”

“Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” Showtime’s limited series about Travis Kalanick’s period as CEO of the rideshare company, runs on a simple either-or proposition. Kalanick focused all of his energies on the success of the corporation he ran, at the expense of his employees’ well-being and physical safety, as well as of ethics, labor practices and the law. This made him either a terrible boss or — as he sees it — the optimal one.
That this question is so easily answered accounts for why “Super Pumped” is such a punishing watch. Kalanick’s delusions and shortfalls as a manager were all explored in journalist Mike Isaac’s book of the same name, the source material for this series. While Uber was phenomenally successful at transforming the economy and bringing to heel local taxi services, Kalanick himself resigned from the company, amid scandal, in 2017. Travis Kalanick, the former CEO of the ride-sharing company Uber, might seem like a tiresome subject for a seven-episode docudrama series: another move-fast-break-things tech bro whose “change the world” sloganeering barely disguises a seething insecurity. Yet these qualities are exactly what makes this such a plum role for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the star of the new series “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.” That’s not meant as a dig at Gordon-Levitt, a talented actor with charisma and energy to spare. But his work as Kalanick does the neat trick of flipping a performer’s potential weaknesses — a sometime tendency to peacock, in his visible efforts to put on a show — into a character-defining strength. The show’s version of Kalanick, called “Tk” by his closest colleagues, is brash and cocksure; he’s also relentlessly self-conscious about his endless points of reference — “Zuck” (of Facebook), “Ek” (of Spotify), and any other...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is brash and bullish as former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick in the trailer for Showtime’s “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” which debuted on Thursday.
The series from “Billions” duo Brian Koppelman and David Levien and Beth Schacter (“Soundtrack”) tells the story of Kalanick, who was “one of Silicon Valley’s most successful and most destructive unicorns,” according to Showtime’s press release.
Kyle Chandler stars as his mentor Bill Gurley, the venture capitalist who funded Uber’s success.
“We are disruptors. We are kings, gods,” Gordon-Levitt declares in the trailer as Uber takes off. But when things start to fall apart and a colleague tells him, “I’m going to side with the company, ” he yells, “I Am the company.” In another scene, he threatens, “Disloyalty needs to be punished.”
We also see Uma Thurman sporting a wig, an accent and an attitude as Arianna Huffington.

Apple TV Plus released a trailer for “Suspicion,” an eight-episode limited series starring Uma Thurman, premiering on Feb. 4.
Thurman plays a high-profile CEO living in New York City, where her son is taken by four mysterious, masked kidnappers at a hotel. As the FBI and the U.K.’s National Crime Agency set their eyes on four seemingly ordinary British citizens staying at the hotel, they scramble to prove their innocence — but not everyone can be trusted.
In the trailer, the four British visitors struggle to provide alibis, finding themselves in a trans-Atlantic game of cat and mouse.
Starring alongside Thurman are Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory”), Noah Emmerich (“The Americans”), Georgina Campbell (“Black Mirror”), Elizabeth Henstridge (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Tom Rhys-Harries (“White Lines”), Elyes Gabel (“Scorpion”) and Angel Coulby (“Dancing on the Edge”).
Based on the Israeli series “False Flag,” “Suspicion” is led by showrunner and executive producer Rob Williams.

The pandemic has made desperadoes of all of us. There’s a strange kind of helplessness that sets in as home-bound film fans search for a decent movie to watch. Mind you, the medium has existed for more than a century, and its classics have never been more available than they are now. But unless you subscribe to a cinephile service like the Criterion Channel or Mubi, the good stuff isn’t curated in a way to help audiences stuck at home. And so, unsure what to watch, we settle for movies like “Desperados,” another lazy example of comedy-as-content from the Netflix machine, and among the service’s most popular performers for July.
If you liked such Netflix originals as “Ibiza” and “Wine Country,” try “Desperados,” or so the algorithm goes. Even the movie seems to have been made by computer, resulting in — to prove that leading lady Nasim Pedrad deserves a better movie.

All day Wednesday, dozens of prominent Black women in Hollywood, fashion, business, literature and political activism will be taking over the Instagram accounts of white women including Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Warren, as part of the #ShareTheMicNow campaign, which aims to amplify the voices and stories of Black women.
Created by Bozoma Saint John, Cmo at Endeavor, fashion designer Stacey Bende, and bestselling writers Luvvie Ajayi Jones and Glennon Doyle, the campaign will see 46 Black women run the accounts of 46 white women. “When the world listens to women, it listens to white women. We need to listen to Black women.

Seasoned Wme agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh is shifting to a new role at the agency. She will focus on live events and continue developing Together Live, a separate business she founded and co-owns with the agency.
Walsh, who rose through the lit department and has branched out into representing speakers and conferences in nearly two decades at the company, opted to step away from day-to-day agenting. In recent years, after a strong run leading William Morris and then William Morris Endeavor to the top lit ranks, she handled tours for notable talent like Oprah Winfrey and Arianna Huffington.
The move follows last Friday’s 11th-hour abandonment by Endeavor of its long-nurtured plan to stage an initial public offering. While the company, which owns Wme and a range of other businesses, still hopes to find a favorable time in 2020 to hit the public markets, the Ipo climate had worsened considerably in recent months.

According to liberal media watchdog group Media Matters for America, Carlson made those and other sexist comments multiple times when he called in to shock jock radio program Bubba the Love Sponge.
“Between 2006 and 2011, Tucker Carlson spent approximately an hour a week calling in to Bubba the Love Sponge, a popular shock jock radio program where he spoke with the hosts about a variety of cultural and political topics in sometimes-vulgar terms,” Media Matters said in an article on its website.
The group also said he defended polygamist cult leader Warren Jeffs.
“Carlson diminished the actions of Warren Jeffs, then on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list for his involvement in arranging illegal marriages between adults and underage girls, talked about sex and young girls,...

Tucker Carlson responded Sunday night to the discovery of controversial and off-color comments he made during conversations with a radio “shock jock” between 2006 and 2011, urging people who wanted to know more about what he thought to watch his primetime program on Fox News Channel.
Media Matters for America, a liberal advocacy group, posted excerpts from various broadcasts by Bubba the Love Sponge, a popular radio host whose real name is Todd Alan Clem. During various shows, Carlson made negative, often misogynistic remarks about some celebrities and appeared to defend Warren Jeffs, the religious leader who had been placed on the FBI’s most-wanted fugitive list on charges he had arranged marriages between his adult male followers and underage girls
“Media Matters caught me saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago. Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I’m on television every weeknight live for an hour.
