Can an old-fashioned monster movie still work in the 1980s? The dedicated cast for this overachieving chiller takes its story of ‘Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers’ in directions most punk-era horrors do not.

The month kicks off with The Initiation on Blu-ray, one of the best of the college-based slasher movies of the 1980s. Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

There was a surprise in store for fans rocking out to Omd (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark)'s SXSW concert…and we're not talking about Moby's impromptu collabo. As the electro-pop band jammed on stage Friday evening, a camera boom weighing about 350 pounds fell into the audience, injuring several fans, according to Spinner. "One man walked out with a large gash across his head, followed by another man escorted by police," Scott Shumaker, a record label rep at the event, told Billboard. "It appeared that at least six or seven people needed medical attention, and at least two people were carried out on stretchers." Ouch. Only four of those affected by the incident...

Some acts do as many as a dozen shows so there’s much music to hear,...

It's hard to remember it now, but there was a time when Donnie, Danny, Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, A.J., Brian, Nick and Howie ruled the world. In their prime (roughly 1984-2000), the members of the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block ruled the teen pop world. That explains why the news about their blockbuster joint tour has set hearts aflutter across the popscape. And though some of their vocals were rough trade at points during Sunday night's (November 21) American Music Awards TV debut, the energy, dance moves and magnetic pull of the respective bands' greatest hits were undeniable.
But that's not what excited me.
See, I'm a word guy, and nothing delights me more than clever wordplay (which might explain why we speak almost exclusively in "Runny Babbit" language in our house) and I suspect that the clever accountant who realized that these two group's names combined made...

Before surrendering to bland John Hughes sentimentality, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark infused avant-garde circuit-bending with a warm pop heart. History Of Modern—the first true Omd album since recently reunited founders Andrew McCluskey and Paul Humphreys parted in 1989—is meant to recall those early, experimental days, right down to its Peter Saville-designed cover. Occasionally, it works: “Sister Marie Says,” initially scrapped in 1996 for its resemblance to “Enola Gay,” is skeletal synth-pop at its catchiest. The two-part title track and “New Holy Ground” recall the wistful theatricality of Architecture & Morality’s “Joan Of Arc” and Dazzle Ships’ “The ...
