The last time Blackberry Smoke frontman Charlie Starr saw his longtime friend and bandmate Brit Turner was at Turner’s Atlanta home. The drummer, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2022, was under hospice care, but Starr had some rare good news to deliver.
“I told him our record was Number One,” Starr tells Rolling Stone. “And his eyes got really big. He had really stopped speaking at that point. [But] it was obvious to me he knew what I had told him.”

Dick Curtis, best known as being Jonathan Winters‘ straight man on The Jonathan Winters Show, has died at the age of 95. The veteran comedic actor and performer died on September 16 of heart failure at Los Angeles’ Va hospital. Curtis’ death was confirmed by his friend, TV writer Paul Jackson, according to Deadline. Curtis was a regular performer on Winters’ self-titled variety show, which ran for two seasons from 1967-1969, as the host’s straight man — the person in a comedy duo whose lines give a comedian the opportunity to make jokes. Curtis starred in the animated series Motormouse and Autocat and also appeared in The Dick Van Dyke Show in a memorable episode featuring Mary Tyler Moore that is now in the Smithsonian. In the episode, titled “Coast to Coast Bigmouth,” he played game show host Johnny Patrick who gets Moore’s character, Laura Petrie, to say that Alan Brady wore a toupee.

Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, the usually relatively quiet Red Dwarf Twitter account announced this:
#RedDwarf #RedDwarfReborn@realrobgrant @DougRDNaylor @CCfunkandsoul Chris Barrie @DannyJohnJules @bobbyllew @normanlovett1 Hattie Hayridge @Tordfc pic.twitter.com/LQH9LPgWRB

The statement read:
“Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are delighted to announce that the ongoing dispute over the Red Dwarf rights has been resolved.
Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best.
Smoke a kipper, Red Dwarf will be back for breakfast!!” (sic)
This came as a bit of a bolt from the blue, particularly among anyone who hadn’t been closely following the show since its last special, ‘The Promised Land’, in 2020.

In space, no one can hear you grumble about your s****y job. The title sequence for "Red Dwarf" opens with a guy in a grubby spacesuit, miserably daubing paint on the exterior of the eponymous mining vessel. When the camera pulls back we can see why he's unhappy; he is working on the "F" of the ship's name which must be about 80 feet high.
It could be a scene from "Dark Star" or "Alien," two movies that showed us that space travel will be pretty boring and arduous for the regular Joes who keep the lights on during long hauls between the stars. Those films provided inspiration for "Red Dwarf" writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who set their cult British show on a spaceship three million years in the future. Only one of its characters is a living human, but that doesn't stop them from following the classic...

Mixed-ish juggles the topics of racism, colorism, and sexism in a simple storyline that cannot help but leave you grinning.
I don't know if it's his smile, but Paul Jackson stole this episode! He could eventually be dethroning Phil Dumphey as TV Dad of the Year.
On mixed-ish Season 1 Episode 2 there was a lot of focus on 1985 being a simpler time, which helped put the family's experience into context.
The experience today of being mixed might be less harsh, but the undertones this series deals with remains to this day.
Related: All Rise Season 1 Episode 1: A Robust Courtroom Drama With Heart
In 1985, interracial marriage had just been legalized, and it was still rare to see mixed children in society.
The struggle to fit in, while being mixed-race, was more heightened.
When you get older, you'll learn being different is a superpower.

Duncan Campbell, national content director of Australian Radio Network said of 97.3fm: “We bounced back to number one, which is where we expect they station to be. However, only the first three weeks of the network are included in today’s data from Nielsen which covers ten listening weeks. The new network launched on May 21. Today’s radio ratings cover the period of March 25 to April 28 and May 6 to June 9.

Dmg Radio has called in Ted Horton to lead the marketing of its new radio network smoothfm.
Group marketing director Tony Thomas told Mumbrella the decision came on the back of working with Horton during his stint at the Coles marketing team. Thomas and Horton – boss of agency Big Red – worked together on the Curtis Stone-fronted Feed Your Family for $10 promotion.
Thomas was head of advertising and media at Coles in a contract role during 2010. As well as Coles, Horton also handles advertising for Jetstar, some of Target and Westpac.
The launch of the easy listening format in Sydney and Melbourne was revealed last week. It replaces the short lived Classic Rock, which in turn replaced Vega.
Speaking in a video interview with Mumbrella editor Tim Burrowes, Thomas said: “I’ve had a good relationship with Ted over the years, I worked with him at Coles.
“I absolutely admire and respect the guy.

Dmg Radio Australia has today confirmed another rebrand of its second stations in Sydney and Melbourne as smoothfm, which will follow an easy listening “more music and less talk” format. The radio company believes it has identified a significant gap in the market for the format.
The move is another radical change of direction for the stations, which were branded as Vega Radio until March 2010.
The final set of radio ratings for the two Vega stations saw an audience share of 3.4% in Sydney and 3.7% in Melbourne.
The two stations then unsuccessfully relaunched as Classic Rock in an attempt to take on Austereo’s Triple M. However, audience share failed to improve significantly, hovering around 3.6% in both markets.
A year ago, Dmg quietly dropped the Classic Rock brand and moved to the more neutral Sydney’s 95.3 FM and Melbourne’s 91.5Fm, along with the positioning “Classic songs. Classic rock.”

A new company launched a camera and started a revolution. Encore looks at how Red has changed the industry and forced the bigger companies to compete.
For a business founded in 1999, the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company has come a long way – and gained a substantial market share in the process, competing head-to- head with the more established players like Arri, Sony and Panavision.

The following is from Steven Sears about his new job with Cookie Jar
which was reported on Ausxip on 01 May 2009:
Steven writes:
I'm not at liberty to discuss specifics about the projects yet but I can say that I have a three pilot deal with Cookie Jar. Two of them are animation series and one is a live action series. And the live action series is a fantasy adventure which is the most bizarre thing I have ever written. People who have read the opening teaser for the script have all responded with "Wtf????" :)
Although I have been contracted to write these projects, we don't have a network yet. We're just now starting to take them out to the various networks to try and sell them. So far, I have written full bibles and pilot script outlines for the series.
Cookie Jar is a great company to be with.
