Janice Burgess, the two-time Daytime Emmy winner who created the beloved animated musical series The Backyardigans for Nickelodeon, has died. She was 72.
Burgess died Saturday in hospice care in Manhattan of breast cancer, her former Nickelodeon colleague Brown Johnson told The New York Times.
The Backyardigans ran for four seasons on Nick Jr. from 2004-13 and was a big hit with preschoolers. It centered on five animal neighbors — Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha and Austin — who meet in their shared backyard and embark on imaginary and magical adventures, often visiting different parts of the world or traveling back or forward in time.
Burgess was a production executive at Nick Jr. when she came up with the idea for a live-action show called Me and My Friends, with the characters wearing full-body puppet costumes. When execs didn’t go for that, she suggested computer animation to get The Backyardigans greenlighted.

With the new CG “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2012, some well-known actors have been pulled on board to voice the anthropomorphized fighting turtles. The latest is Sean Astin, perhaps best known as Samwise Gamgee in the “Lord of the Rings” films, who will be voicing Raphael.
The other three main characters have also been cast, with Jason Biggs of “American Pie” fame as Leonardo, Greg Cipes (Beast Boy in “Teen Titans) as Michelangelo, and longtime voice actor Rob Paulsen (“Pinky and the Brain” and “Animaniacs”) as Donatello. Ironically, Paulsen voiced Raphael in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series that ran from 1987 to 1996.
In an official press release, Astin said, "I'm excited to be joining the ranks of the newest 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' team. This franchise and these characters are beloved around the world, and I'm proud to be the next Raphael. I...

The Lord of the Rings' Sean Astin will lend his voice to Raphael in the new Nickelodeon CG-animated TV reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He rounds out the rest of the voice cast that includes Jason Biggs (American Pie) as Leonardo, Greg Cipes (Teen Titans) as Michelangelo and Rob Paulsen (Planet Sheen) as Donatello. The cool thing about Paulsen is that he was the original Raphael in the first series from 1987-1996.
The animated series is currently in production, and is set to premiere in the fall 2012. The show brought together a pretty cool voice cast, and I hope the show end up being cool. I didn't really care for the initial character designs, but I'm still looking forward to seeing them in action.
Fans will get there first look at the series at San Diego Comic-Con in July. To watch the first promo trailer click here.

Hollywoodnews.com: Contrary to popular belief, M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” did not completely destroy the franchise. But it perhaps contributed to a decision by Nickelodeon to send “Airbender” back to its animated roots.
The television network announced today that a sequel to “Last Airbender” will premiere on the channel in 2011. Tentatively titled “The Legend of Korra,” the new animated series will build off the mythology of the original series. It does not sound like it will reference Shyamalan’s film at all.
This is good news, as dedicated fans of the series who expressed frustration at Shyamalan’s film never wavered in their support for the original cartoon. In response to my negative review of the film, many fans pleaded with me to spend time watching the original series. And I plan to, just as soon as I finish the superb “The Wire.

But Triton, banished by his father until ready to follow in his footsteps, has a revenge plan that might affect all of Bikini Bottom.
"I was so thrilled when I was asked to be a part of SpongeBob as my children love the show," said Beckham. "When I told the boys that I was going to be on the show, they were so excited!

Nickelodeon has their fair share of characters with super powers, and even the fairly odd. But Nick's latest caped twosome are actually more "super fans" than superheroes. "Fanboy & Chum Chum," which premieres on Nickelodeon November 6th, doesn't star two superheroes but it does feature some superstar voice talents. Among them are "Ghost Whisperer" star Jamie Kennedy and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" star Josh Duhamel.
Fanboy and Chum Chum are obsessed with all things fantasy and comic books. Armed with their super imaginations, the pair don their tights and then their underwear on top of that before heading out on their daily adventures. In the first episode, Fanboy and Chum Chum welcome wizard school-expellee Kyle, voiced by Kennedy, into their circle.
The CGI-animated show, based on "Random! Cartoons" short "Fanboy," was created by Eric Robles and is produced by Frederator Studios, who also produces "The Fairly OddParents" for the network.

Disney’s been at it for years and now rival animation studio DreamWorks is bringing one of their big screen hits to the small screen. Last year’s summer hit, Kung Fu Panda followed the antics of tubby martial artist wannabe Po (voiced by Jack Black) and the spin-off cartoon will continue his adventures (though it’s doubted that Black will reprise his voice duties, instead replaced by a cheaper sound-alike). Imaginatively titled Kung Fu Panda: The Series, the 26-episode effort will be a union with kids cable channel, Nickelodeon following in the footsteps of their previous collaboration, The Penguins of Madagascar, which (yes, you guessed it) centres on the ingenious penguins from DreamWorks hits Madagascar and its sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
The penguins’ caper premiered two months ago on Us TV and has proved a hit, scoring big numbers in the ratings and getting the thumbs up from many critics.

The image of being passively sprawled out in front of the living room TV to gaze upon Saturday morning cartoons doesn't loom big in Nickelodeon's plans. The kids' network continues to capture younger audiences using emerging media platforms even before the younger generation has a chance to realize what traditional media consumption used to be. Nickelodeon this week debuted three new original minipilots for its Nick Jr. programming block on mobile phones -- before rolling the content out via broadband service Nick Jr. Video and then on Nick Jr. television. Each of the one- to three-minute pilots -- Pass the Pinha, Jinny Starfly and All Aboard -- were created through the Institute of Applied Play, Nick Jr.'s creative lab. Nickelodeon Preschool Television executive creative director Brown Johnson said that the group already has been responsible for successfully transforming other original shorts into Nick pilots.
