An extraordinary year for the Colombian Oscar nominee continued as Ciro Guerra’s drama was announced on Wednesday as winner of the 2016 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize.
A jury comprising former winners Mike Cahill and Shane Carruth, Kerry Bishé from Catch And Release, science professor Clifford Johnson, and Harvard director of space genetics Ting Wu awarded the $20,000 cash award.
They cited the film for its “original and provocative portrait of a scientist and a scientific journey into the unknown, and for its unconventional depiction of how different cultures seek to understand nature.”
For the first time the Institute said it will add a Fellowship for a writer with an early-stage episodic project to support its development for television.
Writer-director Mark Levinson has been awarded the $15,000 Sundance Institute / Sloan Fellowship for The Gold Bug Variations, while co-writers Darcy Brislin and Dyana Winkler (Bell) each receive $12,500 Sundance Institute / Sloan Commissioning Grants.

There are a ton of movies that deal with time travel, and most of them are really great. When it comes to time travel in these stories, it doesn't really matter if it's possible or not, it's all about the imagination and wonder of it all.
The Screen Junkies wondered how far away from time travel technology we are, so they enlisted the expertise of University of Southern California physicist Dr. Clifford Johnson and Jpl Nasa scientist Christina Heinlein. They got them to break down the physics of time travel in films such as Back to the Future, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Days of the Future Past, Edge of Tomorrow, and even some TV shows like Quantum Leap.
Even if time travel isn't really possible, it still makes for an entertaining plot point in the movies!

We’ve seen many different versions of time travel in movies, but how many of those time travel scenarios are actually scientifically feasible? ScreenJunkies have enlisted University of Southern California physicist Dr. Clifford Johnson and Nasa scientist Christina Heinlein to talk about films like Groundhog Day, Back to the Future, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Planet of […]

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the best TV shows ever made. Despite being essentially a children's show, The Last Airbender was almost perfect in every regaurd; the characters were likeable and well thought out, the action was amazing, the plot was intense and thoughtful, and the overall tone of the show was pitch perfect, featuring some of the finest episodes of television I've ever seen. In my opinion, Tla is the closest this generation might get to a Star Wars-esque trilogy...it's just that wonderful. So with all that in mind, I went into The Legend of Korra quite hopeful. As a sequel to the original story, things could go south pretty fast (ala The Prequel Trilogy). But I had hope in creators Michael Dante Di Martino and Bryan Konietzko (the two co-creators of Tla) to deliver something that could live up to the origanal's glory. Do...

Last month Wxrt’s Eclectic Company held a live taping at Metro, hosted by noted Chicago musicians Jon Langford and Nicholas Tremulis. The first-ever Eclectic Company Live Concert Special featured special guests Eleventh Dream Day, Robbie Fulks, The M’s, Ezra Furman & The Harpoons, Cliff Johnson, the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra and Metro owner Joe Shanahan spinning between sets. The taping broadcasts on 93.1 FM at 10 p.m. tomorrow, but for a visual expose of what you’ll be hearing, Paste:Local attended the live taping. Looking for an added sneak peak? Eleventh Dream Day premiered a couple songs from their forthcoming album, including “Satellite,” due out next year. There are also a couple surprising collaborations. And we won’t say whom, but someone does a really cool cover of The Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored.” For the rest, you’ll have to tune in tomorrow night.
