Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has dismissed speculation that he is interested in a move to Liverpool in the summer, but will keep his options open, according to Sky Sports.
The 24-year old was quoted in Belgian media last month as saying Liverpool “meets my criteria” but he has since claimed reports linking him with a move to Anfield are wide of the mark.
Speaking to Dutch newspaper Metro, he said:
“I have also read that Liverpool would be interested.
“I never said Liverpool would be my next club. Nothing is true about that.”
Ajax are set to lose most of their star players in the summer with Siem de Jong and Christian Eriksen both set to move on in the summer, but Alderweireld insists the Dutch Giants are still very much part of his plans when it comes to assessing his options in the summer.
“Ajax is in every way a fantastic club.

Brendan Rodger’s first competitive match in charge of Liverpool got off to a winning start as the Reds beat Fc Gomel 1-0 at the Central Stadion in Belarus.
Stewart Downing’s 67th minute piledriver gave them the important away goal to take to the second leg of the Europa League third round qualifier, but it was by no means smooth sailing for Liverpool, with the opposition proving difficult to break down, as well as causing some real problems at the back.
Brad Jones was forced to pull of a couple of decent saves, and Gomel midfielder Siarhei Kazeka smashed the ball against the post shortly before Downing’s goal.
Rodger’s named a line-up that was slightly stronger than many expected for the qualifier, with Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Glen Johnson all starting.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has hit out at Manchester United for using their political power against him during last season’s racism dispute between him and Patrice Evra.
The Uruguayan striker, who received an eight match ban for reportedly using offensive racial terms against Evra, has spoken candidly about his take on the incident in an interview in his home country.
The 25 year old, who scored a hat-trick in Uruguay’s Olympic warm-up friendly against Chile last week, says he “broke down in tears” several times after failing to clear his name to the Football Association.
“I had to go to Manchester in a taxi for the trial. I got up at seven in the morning and I came home at nine at night. I was exhausted, I was so tired. I wanted to cry, and kick all the things around me.” Says Suarez.

England have crashed out of the European Championships on penalties.
Substitute Alessandro Diamanti’s decisive penalty saw off Roy Hodgson’s men after Ashley Young and Ashley Cole both missed. England’s miserable record at penalties has now stretched to just one win in seven of their previous penalty shoot-outs at major tournaments.
In truth, Italy should have put the game to bed much sooner. The stats speak for themselves. Gli Azzurri enjoyed 63% of the overall ball possession and had 18 shots on target to England’s 4. Daniel De Rossi thundered a superb shot against the post after just 3 minutes, leaving keeper Joe Hart well beaten whilst Diamanti again hit the post in the tenth minute of extra time with a cross-cum shot.
After peppering the England goal with 31 shots in total, Italy thought they had finally made the breakthrough five minutes from the end of extra time when Antonio Nocerino...

So England have pulled off quite the accomplishment, Roy Hodgson has not only managed to guide the three lions into the Quarter-Finals of the tournament but also go into the stage as winners of Group D, a group that many had doubted England would even manage to get out of. Players have really stepped up their game with the likes of Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Joleon Lescott gaining praise for their excellent performances for the side when called upon. So they now face Italy a side brimming with confidence after managing to fight-off a good Croatian side in the battle for second place in Group C. Italy will not be easy opponents for England but England come into this game most likely with a ton of motivation and will probably be confident of possibly making it through to the Semi-Finals.

England survived a nervous end to keep in tact a priceless 3-2 win over Sweden.
Goals from Andy Carroll, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck were just enough to see off Erik Hamren’s men who have now lost two consecutive group matches.
The game was delicately balanced at 2-2 after a Olof Mellberg double, before Danny Welbeck’s acrobatic finish ten minutes from the end.
England started the game the brighter of the two teams and Isaksson was forced into an early save by Scott Parker after Welbeck chested the ball down to him.
Welbeck then nodded a header just wide after getting on the end of a James Milner cross.
Sweden took until the fifteenth minute to really get going, and Ibrahimovic was unlucky to lose control of a Seb Larsson cross. The AC Milan forward then saw a long ranged effort easily kept out by Joe Hart.

England and France drew their opening game after a Joleon Lescott header was cancelled out by Samir Nasri’s low strike from the edge of the area. Chances were at a premium and James Milner had arguably the best chance of the lot but could not score after rounding the keeper.
Hodgson sprung something of a surprise by selecting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left, but apart from the young Arsenal star England lined up as most expected. Milner was chosen over Theo Walcott on the right, primarily for his defensive diligence, and Danny Welbeck’s mobility was chosen over Carroll’s physicality, a nod perhaps to the physical but slightly lead-footed French centre backs .
France were missing Yann M’vila, but Alou Diarra was passed fit and filled the holding midfield position. Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye and Chelsea’s Florent Malouda were selected ahead of him, with the attacking trio of Benzema,...

Every weekday before Euro 2012 begins on June 8, we’ll preview a national team in the field, beginning with Group A and finishing with Group D. Today we continue Group D with England, a nation which continues its precipitous decline.
Nothing makes me happier than the fact that English fans finally have accepted the fact that the national team essentially have no chance to win a major international tournament. Even with a full squad they would struggle against European competition, but the prospects of making it out of the group stage become even more unlikely without the likes of Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Cahill and Gareth Barry.
Group A Previews: Poland | Russia | Czech Republic | Greece
England’s strengths this year are, ironically, areas of historical weakness: goalkeeper and manager. I know, I know, no one really likes Roy Hodgson, but he’s certainly the best choice for the job given...

Roy Hodgson’s move to replace the injured Gary Cahill with Martin Kelly means Liverpool have six players in England’s Euro 2012 squad. That’s makes them the most represented club in the national team with Manchester United in second with four players.
It is a remarkable achievement for a club that suffered their worst league campaign for 20 years; and whose name recalls bad memories for the England Manager Roy Hodgson. He was appointed Liverpool boss in July 2010 but was removed after 31 games following the club’s worst start to a season in 82 years.
However following his departure, Steven Gerrard, one of Hodgson’s Euro-Reds, admitted that the Liverpool players had let him down. Nonetheless Hodgson has appointed Gerrard as England Captain; and with such a heavy reliance on Merseysiders this summer; Hodgson will be hoping they can right the wrongs of the past.
Whether the Liverpool contingent can do that remains to be seen.

England squad announcements always spark debate and draw much criticism and Roy Hodgson was never going to please everybody with his 23-man selection for Euro 2012. But here are five players that have every right to feel aggrieved at their exclusion:
1. Micah Richards
With Kyle Walker suffering a toe injury that ruled him out of contention for the squad, Richards could have been forgiven for assuming he would make the cut.
Glen Johnson’s defensive qualities are constantly brought into question, the main question being: “does he have any?” and for all Phil Jones’ promise he has struggled at right-back for Manchester United in the second half of this season.
Richards’ form has undoubtedly dipped since the turn of the year, something that was addressed by Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini who preferred to play Pablo Zabaleta in that position for the last few games of the season.

Here’s the full squad…
Goalkeepers:
Joe Hart (Manchester City) – Taking Joe Hart is no shock at all after his impressive displays in recent years not only for England but also on a consistent basis for Manchester City. Hart is Manchester City’s number one goalkeeper and his team, thanks to him, conceded the least amount of goals in the 2011/12 Premier League season. His England career began in 2005 when he was part of the U19′s team. Two years later he was moved into the U21′s where he played 21 games. He made his official senior team debut against Trinidad and Tobago, on 1 June 2008, ever since then he has played 17 games conceding 11 goals.
Robert Green (West Ham) – Having played 42 games this season in the Championship he is definitely a major part of the West Ham team. His...

Update: This article was written before the news hit that Rio Ferdinand and Kyle Walker had been omitted from Euro 2012 selection due to their respective injuries.
Tomorrow is the start of a new beginning for the England squad, and the start of Roy Hodgson’s involvement in deciding who features for the three lions, and who has had his time. There could be shock entries in the squad, as well as shock omissions, but whichever names get officially released we need to make sure as a nation we get behind them for the good of English football, whether we agree or not.
Here is my look at the possibilities Hodgson will have been mulling over, and also my opinion on if they’re up to the task of wearing our shirt in Poland and Ukraine.

The contest saw them battle over who could cook a basic three-egg omelette in the shortest time. Those key players will be a big loss for the Black Cats who may also be without Kieran Richardson who is nursing a calf injury. On loan Manchester City leftback Wayne Bridge is on stand by having replaced Richardson last week.
John O’Shea is expected...

Caretaker manager Stuart Pearce takes charge of his first England match tonight for the international friendly against Holland at Wembley Stadium. The match has a 7.45pm kick-off and will be screened live in the UK on ITV 1.
Team news ahead of tonight’s game…
Pearce has chosen Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker to captain the side, replacing Chelsea’s John Terry who was stripped of the role by the Fa earlier this month. This was of course the decision that Capello’s public disagreement of cost him his job as manager and his resignation just days later was accepted by the Fa.
Obviously Parker will center the midfield tonight, possibly alongside Steven Gerrard who was snubbed for the captaincy or Gareth Barry.
Pearce will be unable to call upon Wayne Rooney (throat infection), Aston Villa’s Darren Bent (ruptured ankle ligaments) for his attack line with Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge...

Interim England manager Stuart Pearce has announced his England squad for the friendly against Holland next week at Wembley Stadium.
The big surprise is in the inclusion of Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell, who has only just come back from injury for the Wearsiders and has two goals to his name since his return to the side last month. Though one of those goals was an absolute wonder strike against Norwich.
Campbell seems to have been preferred over Liverpool’s mega signing Andy Carroll who has struggled for goals this season, and the Black Cats forward has earnt his first ever call-up.
Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard is back in the England squad for the first time since November 2010′s friendly against France, Micah Richards returns to the squad, along with Tom Cleverley who is selected again having just recovered from injury and is looking for his first Senior England cap.

Liverpool secured a valuable win at Stamford Bridge as they defeated Chelsea 2-1. Maxi Rodriguez took the lead for the visitors before Daniel Sturridge levelled the scores. Glen Johnson was the hero though as he secured the three points with a fantastic solo effort late on in the game. A goal good enough to win any game – it gave the Reds the edge in this tight affair.
Unless you’re Irish or read a huge amount into England’s win over Spain (which was quite remarkable but don’t forget the Spaniards also drew with Costa Rica during the break), the last two weeks have been rather uneventful for fans of competitive football. We’d be happy to see anyone playing in the four ‘o’ clock Super Sunday slot, but Chelsea against Liverpool was exactly the kind of fix any self-respecting footy addict was dying for. This match was bound...

There are a lot of positives to be taken from England’s victory against Spain on Saturday; but if history has taught us anything, it’s that we must not, as England fans, get carried away by one good result. Prior to Saturday’s 1-0 win against Spain, it had been 31 long years since an England football team had beaten the reigning World Champions. On the 13th of May 1980, England played host to 1978 World Cup Winners Argentina, in what was Diego Maradona’s first appearance on English soil. Two goals from Liverpool’s David Johnson and a goal from the soon to be Southampton striker Kevin Keegan led England to a 3-1 win that day, and all seemed rosy.
Until four days later England played Wales in the ‘British Home Championship’. Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground was the venue that day, and England’s players appeared to never even come out...

In a match surrounded by controversy with FIFA’s ruling against displaying the poppy on England’s shirts to the selection of John Terry after being currently under investigation for alleged racism, England defeated Spain 1-0 at Wembley. England gave a strong but extremely defensive display against the reigning World and European Champions, making the most of their few chances to snatch the victory.
From the outset England were consistently putting all 9 or 10 men behind the ball with every Spain attack and they were attacks which came thick and fast. Spain were their usual selves throughout the match, stringing passes into the slightest of areas and creating chances from nothing however it wasn’t enough to penetrate a solid English defence.
The initial talking points of the match came from the team selections. Spain displayed a very strong side which included David Villa, David Silva, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and company.

After only gaining one point on the road previous to their trip to Anfield, Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm made sure that there would be another point gained this time around after pulling off a string of spectacular saves late in the match in what was a very entertaining nil-nil draw.
Liverpool started the tie very brightly with an attack that should’ve put Liverpool one ahead after just seven minutes. Charlie Adam had played a beautifully weighted pass to Stewart Downing that cut open Swansea’s defence on the left hand side and swung the ball in to Andy Carroll who smashed the ball into the crossbar when the £35 million man really should’ve converted the chance.
There were a flurry of chances for Liverpool after Carroll’s effort was denied by the frame of the goal. Luis Suarez and Stewart Downing both attempted to test Michel Vorm but their chances were both off target.

Luis Suarez is the man of the moment, but will face a late fitness test for the 3pm kick off.
Liverpool will travel to West Bromwich on Saturday to face their former manager’s team, whilst Luis Suarez faces a late fitness test for the game.
The build up to this game has centred largely around one man who has been capturing the headlines in one way or another. Luis Suarez, Liverpool’s star signing from Ajax, has taken the Premier League by storm since joining in January. As he continues to impress with his footballing ability, controversy looms over the Uruguayan’s shoulders.
Two weeks ago, when Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United, Patrice Evra made claims after the game, that Suarez has racially abused him. Liverpool boss, Kenny Dalglish, has this week called for a swift end to the allegations, as he does...

Liverpool versus Norwich City
22 October 2011
Anfield
Attendance: 44,931
Grant Holt provided the equaliser for Norwich as they drew at Anfield.
Martin Skrtel and Luis Suarez hit the woodwork before Craig Bellamy’s deflected shot put Liverpool ahead just before the break.
But, only three minutes after coming on, Holt planted a bullet header beyond Pepe Reina to equalise.
With Liverpool pushing for a winner, John Ruddy pulled off an instinctive save from Suarez to deny the hosts.
Suarez had looked certain to snatch victory for the home side but the Canaries goalkeeper tipped the striker’s shot from close range over the bar.
The Uruguayan’s effort capped a string of spurned chances as Liverpool laid siege on Ruddy’s goal in the closing stages.
The 24-year-old had kept his side level in the opening exchanges of the game, too.
Suarez collected Bellamy’s pull back and the former Ajax forward...

The two most successful clubs in English football will go head to head at Anfield on Saturday, in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.
The inter-city rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United dates back to the industrial times. Liverpool was famous for its thriving port, whilst Manchester was a renowned manufacturing city. The completion of the Manchester Ship Canal meant that ships could now bypass Liverpool and go straight into Manchester, causing job losses for the merchants in Liverpool and sparking a long lasting resentment.
Both cities have grown since a decline in the industries in the 70’s and found new successes; Manchester is now recognized as a world-class city and Liverpool was awarded the European Capital of Culture in 2008. Nowadays, it is the football that keeps the fierce rivalry alive, in what is referred to as the North West Derby, or ‘the most famous fixture in...

The Merseyside Derby will be a tough tackling game
Liverpool will travel across Stanley Park to face their local rivals Everton at lunchtime today live on Sky Sports, in what is English football’s most played fixture.
The game at Goodison Park will be the 216th in all competitions between the two neighbouring teams and promises to be a fast paced, heavy tackling affair. Everton, who have the home crowd advantage, will be looking for a third successive Merseyside derby without defeat, as they picked up a 2-0 win in this same fixture last season and also managed a 2-2 draw at Anfield. The Toffees have only lost one home game in the Premier League since November and the Reds haven’t won an away game outside of London since March.
Although being strong in front of their own fans, David Moyes’ men lost their first game of the season...

White Hart Lane has proved to be a difficult venue for Liverpool over the years, with the Reds losing their last four visits to N17 and last winning there in May 2008. As Spurs picked up their first three points of the season at Wolves last weekend, Liverpool sunk to a 1-0 defeat to Stoke, although arguably being the better side.
The two teams will be aiming for that illusive fourth spot and be hoping for Champions League football next season. They meet on Sunday, with the home advantage being Tottenham’s. Harry Redknapp rested key men in their Europa League fixture against Paok on Thurday, including Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Emmanuel Adebayor and Scott Parker, showing that this is an extremely important game. Kenny Dalglish’s team will be looking to bounce back with a win, as Spurs’ hidings from both Manchester teams were slightly redeemed last weekend and they...

A lot can change in the space of a year, as anyone connected to Liverpool Football Club will know all too well. With new owners, changes in management, signings and departures, there has been dramatic and much needed change at the club.
Going into their fourth Premier League fixture this time last season, Liverpool had started bleakly, managing a point in their opening fixture at home to Arsenal, letting the three points slip from their grasps when Pepe Reina fumbled the ball into his own net on the 90 minute mark, a sign of things to come.
The Reds then found themselves on the receiving end of a 3-0 battering from a Manchester City team with a new lease of life and expensive flare, something Roy Hodgson’s men were evidently lacking. A goal from a certain Fernando Torres helped Liverpool to squeeze past West Brom in an unconvincing win, before...
