From “Wichita Lineman,” to “Rhinestone Cowboy,” Glen Campbell‘s wealth of hits too often overshadows his prolific early career as a session player in the 1960s. As member of the famed Wrecking Crew—an informal collective of highly sought-after studio musicians—he played on literally thousands of songs throughout the decade, many of them hits.
As the world mourns his death on Tuesday at age 81 after a long and brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease, People takes a look back at 10 huge songs you might not have realized featured Campbell’s playing.

The Beach Boys' Southern California sound was synonymous with sunshine, but founding member Mike Love remembers when darkness crept into their world through a brief connection to Charles Manson, who drove his followers to murder in the late 1960s. Love himself had a strange encounter with the Manson "family" leader, as he details in new memoir, Good Vibrations, exclusively excerpted in this week's issue of People, on newsstands Friday. In his book, Love, 75, shares the highs and lows of the band formed by brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, along with their cousin Love and high school pal Al Jardine.

In a bit of bizarre news out of the U.K., Brian Wilson (at piano), Al Jardine (second from left) and David Marks (third from left), three of the founding members of the Beach Boys, have been dumped from the group by Mike Love (right), the band's frontman and Wilson's cousin. Via a publicly-released statement.
"The post-50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the band," says the statement.
The three men's places in the group will be filled by Bruce Johnston, who is a second-generation member of the Beach Boys, and session musicians.

The "Good Vibrations" are over. At least for the foreseeable future. Just days after the Beach Boys' Mike Love and Bruce Johnston issued a press release announcing the band would continue on without original members Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks following the end of the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary tour, distressed fans and even the fired cofounders themselves are lobbying for the original lineup to stay together. Love, who owns the rights to the group's name, announced he was dumping his longtime cohorts in a statement he released, explaining, "The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the...

The Beach Boys might still be Keepin' the Summer Alive with their U.K. tour, but for three members it will be a cold harsh winter.
The band's frontman Mike Love announced that the group will split after this week in the U.K. and three members -- Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks -- have been dropped from the group. The three did not find out they had been dropped until Love and Bruce Johnston released a public statement.
The statement announcing the big shake up reads: "The post-50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the band."
The exiting Beach Boys will be replaced by the group's long-time backing band, which includes Love's son Christian, according to the Telegraph.

Earlier this week, The Beach Boys announced that they would continue touring without Brian Wilson following the conclusion of the group’s tremendously successful 50th anniversary reunion tour later this month. A source tells Hitfix that co-founder Mike Love made the decision to go on without Wilson and Al Jardine as part of the touring group. “Brian and Al would love to continue,” the source says. “Mike Love does not.” As Beach Boys fans know, this year’s 50th anniversary tour marked the first extended tour to include Wilson in decades. Love —alongside fellow Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and other musicians —has toured...

If there was ever a fitting time for The Beach Boys to throw in the towel, it was 2011—following the release of The SMiLE Sessions, the landmark, oft-bootlegged leftovers from Brian Wilson and company’s unfinished ‘60s masterwork. Instead, they went in the exact opposite direction: The group’s surviving members (Wilson; vocalists Al Jardine, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston; original guitarist David Marks) built on the momentum of that long-awaited release, reuniting for a 50th anniversary tour....

-- Beach Boys "That's Why God Made the Radio" (Capitol)
There's a fine line between recreating your timeless signature sound and becoming a nostalgia act for your own music. It happens so much these days with older artists and their numerous comebacks, but not the Beach Boys.
The band reunited earlier this year for their 50th anniversary: They're on a major tour and now they have a new album. "That's Why God Made the Radio" has a retro sound as if they were following up their seminal 1966 album, "Pet Sounds." It even ends on a suite of songs like it does.
That baroque-pop classic bore such hits as "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and the haunting "Caroline, No." And while this new collection of songs may not hold an aesthetic candle to that great record, it does have some real catchy tunes. Tracks like "Shelter," and "Daybreak Over the Ocean" feel...

Johnston made the remark in a video while signing autographs in New York on Thursday.

"You're f----d. Trust me," he said.
"And who's the Republican a-hole?" Our guy isn't good," the singer went on, presumably referring to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt.

Burbank, Calif. — A "miracle."
That's the word Al Jardine not-so-jokingly uses to describe the latest Beach Boys reunion – this one consisting of himself and fellow founding Beach Boys Brian Wilson and Mike Love, as well as longtime players Bruce Johnston and David Marks.
After decades of prolonged separations, legal spats and near reunions, the core Beach Boys are back together, both on stage and for an upcoming new album. Their rebirth, which became a reality earlier this year when the group performed "Good Vibrations" with Maroon 5 and Foster the People at the Grammys, has reawakened musical memories for 69-year-old Jardine.
"When I'm rehearsing over there, I'm hearing stuff I haven't performed for many years," Jardine said during a recent break from rehearsals for the iconic band's 50th anniversary tour, which kicked off last week in Tucson, Ariz.

One of the founding members of the legendary band is Al Jardine, who in 1961 was a schoolboy friend of Brian Wilson when he joined the fledgling group. It was the ultimate concert. Grammy-watchers enjoyed a front row-seat view as the music industry's biggest voices celebrated music's biggest night Sunday on the stage of Los Angeles's Staples Center. And while Adele, the night's top honoree, wowed with a perfect-pitch performance of her award-winning anthem "Rolling in the Deep," and Katy Perry brought the fire with her new tune - not to mention Jennifer Hudson's heartfelt tribute to the late Whitney Houston - several other show-stopping moments took place throughout the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. For those who might have missed them, People.com breaks down the night's most memorable performances.

Beach Boys reunite at the Grammys, perform with Maroon 5 and Foster the People (but not John Stamos)
If you didn't already know that it's been a long time since this lineup of the Beach Boys had played together, you'd be hard-pressed to tell by their performance at the Grammy Awards.
Original members Mike Love, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine joined with Bruce Johnston and David Marks for Sunday's (Feb. 12) show to deliver a tight, sweetly harmonized version of "Good Vibrations." They were joined on stage by Maroon 5 and Foster the People, who performed "Surfer Girl" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice," respectively, before the Beach Boys came out.
Considering they first started making music half a century ago(!), the band's harmonies still sounded really good. The Beach Boys are headed out on a 50th anniversary tour later this year, and they've clearly been working on getting sharp.

Brian Wilson is reuniting with his former band, Beach Boys and heading out on tour after 46 years! But that's not all! They're also recording a brand new album. According to The Wrap, after long negotiations, Wilson is heading out on the road again with founding members Mike Love and Al Jardine, as well as Bruce Johnston and David Marks. The tour will celebrate the band's 50th anniversary.
The band last toured with Wilson back in 1965, though they continued to record together after that. The troubled Wilson is believed to have reached his tipping point, sliding into drug use and depression while recording "Smile," the band's experimental album. It wasn't completed back in 1967, though it was finally released earlier this year.
The two other founding members of the group, Wilson's brothers, are no longer with us. Dennis passed away back in 1983 from drowning, and Carl from cancer in 1998. Wilson said in a statement,...

Founding member Al Jardine approached the rest of The Beach Boys - Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston - to record the track "Don't Fight the Sea", which originally appeared on Jardine's 2010 solo album "A Postcard From California".
He tells Undercover.fm, "We felt that the song had a nice basic message of friendship. I also like the idea of that song, because the vocals are a bit under-appreciated. So this release was a perfect place to showcase the idea of harmony and friendship. Everybody is behind it 100 per cent, that's the nice part."
The first thousand copies of the single bought on Tuesday will be pressed on white vinyl with a red label - to symbolise the Japanese flag. And 90 of them will be signed by the bandmembers.
All proceeds from the charity single will benefit the Red Cross' Japanese relief efforts following the nation's devastating earthquake and tsunami last month.

Most songwriters, even successful ones, toil alone or with a single collaborator. To call them unsung would be oxymoronic, but with a few exceptions they remain unknown to the lovers of their music. You think Barry Manilow wrote "I Write The Songs"? Think again: that tune was penned by former Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. When Olympian songwriter Johnny Mercer joined music publishing legends Abe Olman and Howie Richmond to found the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1969, it wasn't much more than a noble idea: To recognize the tunesmiths and lyricists who "write the songs that make the whole world sing." I attended the group's first induction ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan in 1970, when I was a college student and my dad, Carl Sigman, was among its first members. (Carl always said he got in only because...

Igor Stravinsky may have been right when he said, "Music is the best way to digest time." But I'm sure the great Russian composer would have agreed that some music--particularly pop hits whose predictable melodies and insipid lyrics have a way of permanently implanting themselves in our minds--inspire nothing so much as a desire for regurgitation. In Part One, we revisited such recorded catastrophes as Bobby Goldsboro's Honey, Morris Albert's Feelings and Charlene's I've Never Been to Me. Strong candidates for Part 2 included such stomach-churning charttoppers as Barry Manilow's I Write the Songs (no, you don't, not even this one, which was penned by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston), Helen Reddy's I Am Woman (no, you're not) and Starship's We Built This City on Rock and Roll (no, you most definitely did not). A carton of Maalox later, l submit the...

Golden Gate Park was mentioned, as was the [National] Mall in Washington, DC and the north shore of Chicago by the beach." He added: "I want to see a 100-date anniversary tour.
