The MTV Movie & TV Awards is taking another break. Variety has confirmed that the event, which would have normally taken place around this time of year, will instead sit 2024 out — with an eye toward returning next year, perhaps in a different, “reimagined” format.
It’s been a bumpy decade for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which first began in 1992 (as the MTV Movie Awards). Last’s year’s event was forced to pivot to a pre-taped clip show in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike, as host Drew Barrymore bowed out and the WGA announced plans to picket the ceremony.
Meanwhile, in 2020, the MTV Movie & TV Awards also didn’t take place, due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also because the network had planned to move the franchise (long a spring/early summer staple) to December. Ultimately, instead of an awards show, MTV ran a “MTV Movie & TV...

The MTV Movie & TV Awards ceremony is being put “on pause” this year, according to a spokesperson, as Billboard reports.
The ceremony aired annually from 1992 to 2019, but it went on hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It returned again for its live broadcast format in 2021 and 2022. Then in 2023, the ceremony was derailed by the Writers Guild of America strike.
Last year’s host Drew Barrymore pulled out three days before the ceremony, in the wake of the WGA strike that began five days before the show was set to take place.

Jerry Seinfeld wanted Chris Rock to parody Will Smith slapping him at the 2022 Oscars for his Netflix movie Unfrosted.
While appearing on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s podcast Fly on the Wall this week, Seinfeld said he initially wanted to cast Rock in the role as the host of the Bowl & Spoon Awards, which eventually went to Cedric the Entertainer.
“We shot that right after the Will Smith slap,” Seinfeld said. “I was going to have somebody come up on the stage and have Chris punch ’em out as they got there.”
However, Rock “wasn’t up to perform” the parody of the incident. “He was a little shook from that event,” Seinfeld explained. “That was what that scene was going to be, but Cedric saved the day.”

It’s been six years since Olympics superfan Lesie Jones last traveled with NBC to help cover the games, but the former SNL cast member (and current Daily Show contributor) is coming back.
Jones is the third late-night comic to be added to the network’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
She joins Jimmy Fallon, who will be co-hosting the Closing Ceremony alongside NBC Sports commentator Mike Tirico, and Kenan Thompson, who’s set to co-host an Olympic recap series with Kevin Hart on Peacock.
Jones is no stranger to NBC’s Olympics coverage. In 2016, the network invited her to join their Rio de Janeiro coverage following her live-tweeting of the event went viral. She returned for the Winter Olympics in Korea in 2018.
This year’s summer games will mark her first time on-site at an Olympics in 6 years, since the previous two were covered remotely amid the pandemic.

2023 was the end of an era in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy category. For the first time in 10 years, “Saturday Night Live” was snubbed in the category in which it has been nominated a record 22 times and has won twice, both for Kate MicKinnon. Can it rebound in 2024?
Ever since the TV academy allowed “SNL” cast members to enter in the comedy acting categories in 2008, the sketch series has dominated supporting actress, with 2013 and 2023 being the only years it has failed to earn a nomination. McKinnons is “SNL’s” most nominated performer in the category — and overall — with nine bids, the second most in the category after Rhea Perlman and Loretta Swit, who each received 10.
After McKinnon’s final nomination for her final season in 2022, it was clear that “SNL” might struggle to continue its nomination streak. She was “SNL’s” only nominee in the category that year, down...

With Jon Stewart in Los Angeles this weekend for the Netflix Is a Joke Festival, The Daily Show is switching things up next week.
Instead of hosting the show Monday evening, as he has since returning to the show in February, Stewart will host on Thursday instead.
Jordan Klepper will be at the desk in place Stewart Monday night and will host through Wednesday.
Stewart is set to play L.A.’s Greek Theatre Friday night for a night of standup under the stars that’s being billed as “Jon Stewart and Friends.”
He’s also on the guest list for John Mulaney’s “Everybody’s in L.A.” miniseries, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up sitting down with another semi-retired Late Nighter as a series of comedy legends are expected to participate in a show Netflix is calling “Gods of Comedy With David Letterman.”

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

The former SNL cast member made her debut as a Daily Show contributor after Klepper’s monologue, delivering an impassioned plea to not elect former President Donald Trump back into office.
“Your favorite auntie is back to straighten out America,” Jones began before warning viewers that “America is on the path to doing something really, really stupid!”
In classic Leslie Jones form, she continued: “What the f**k is wrong with us?! This is like a movie where you see the disaster coming from a mile away, and nobody is stopping it. The 2016 Ghostbusters might be one of the most flames major productions of this century, with the trailer quickly becoming the most disliked on YouTube. There were a couple of camps here. One was targeted as being misogynistic, taking personal affront that their beloved characters had been replaced by women. While another is that there just didn’t seem like a point to it all. Why bother if you don’t have the original Ghosbusters? Well, one late recruit — Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore — has some thoughts on the matter.
As Ernie Hudson told The Independent, it seemed like a waste to make the Ghostbusters back in 2016, saying, “Look, I’m a fan of [director] Paul Feig so I have nothing negative about him to say. Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie.”

The latest Ghostbusters movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, has arrived, giving audiences another chance to see the original ‘busters, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, don their paranormal-hunting jumpsuits once again. Now, in a new interview, Hudson has praised Sony for having “stepped up” with the new film, elevating it beyond some of its recent predecessors.
Specifically, Hudson referred to the Ghostbusters reboot — which re-launched the franchise in 2016 — as “disappointing.” Speaking to The Independent, he praised the film’s director Paul Feig, and described its all-female leading cast as “brilliantly funny on their own,” but overall felt that the film lacked intention.

Ernie Hudson, the 78-year-old actor who has appeared in all five of the “Ghostbusters” movies and several “Ghostbusters” video games, spoke with The Independent about the franchise in the lead-up to “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”
The role of Winston Zeddmore was originally offered to Eddie Murphy, and when that didn’t happen, his character’s screen time was greatly reduced. As such, Hudson’s pay was much smaller than that of the other three Ghostbusters, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (the latter two also wrote the script). He also did not appear on any of the posters.
“It’s very tempting, sometimes, to blame anything that doesn’t work in your life on racism. But there are a lot of things that play into it. It’s not quite that simple,” he explained. “We can say it’s a racial thing, but I think if Eddie Murphy had played the role I played,...

Ernie Hudson was "disappointed" with the female-led reboot of 'Ghostbusters'.The 78-year-old actor made a cameo appearance in Paul Feig's movie that featured Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones in the main roles but acknowledged that the picture didn't strike a chord with fans of the franchise.Ernie told The Independent newspaper: "Fans were really invested in the story and the characters, and I think it was disappointing. I enjoyed the movie. But I think it wasn't what fans were hoping for."The star admits that he was puzzled by Feig's decision to reboot the supernatural franchise and thinks he should have made a continuation from the original films – which has subsequently happened with flicks like 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire'.Ernie – who stars as Dr. Winston Zeddemore in the series – said: "Look, I'm a fan of Paul Feig, so I have nothing negative about him to say.

Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson is opening up about the beloved franchise, the female-led reboot and the inequitable treatment he received during the ’80s on the original films.
Hudson has appeared in five Ghostbusters films, starting with 1984’s original, the 1989 sequel, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which hit theaters Friday. The actor also appeared in the female-led Ghostbusters reboot in 2016, albeit playing a different character.
His role as Winston Zeddemore was first offered to Eddie Murphy before Hudson came on board. Reportedly, the role was reduced significantly before filming began (Winston doesn’t even show up until about halfway through the film). The character also wasn’t featured on the theatrical poster. But Hudson says it’s more complicated than chalking it up to racism alone.

In an interview with The Independent, original Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson said he was disappointed with the 2016 all-female reboot of the franchise.
While he allowed that the 2016 cast members — Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones — were all “brilliantly funny on their own,” he didn’t think the finished product resonated with fans.

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Propels Franchise Past $1B As Sequel Opens To $45M+ – Sunday Am Update
Sunday Am: No snowstorm or sour reviews stood in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s path this weekend, as the Gil Kenan-directed, Jason Reitman-produced sequel minted a $45.2M opening after a nice spike on Saturday from families.
Yesterday came in at $16.8M, 5% ahead of Friday/previews’ $16M. If the numbers hold up, that’s the second-best start ever for a Ghostbusters’ movie after the 2016 female ensemble of Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
The domestic opening of the fifth movie takes the entire Ghostbusters franchise, per Sony, past $1 billion. I understand studio reports had the franchise through four films at $985M, a result that’s higher than Box Office Mojo. Mojo’s numbers on overseas are off on the first 1984 film.
Foreign for Frozen Empire was $16.4M from 7,500+ screens in 25 markets, bringing the global start here to $61.6M on the $100M production.
The opening is solid news,...

The Ghostbusters franchise is a pop culture behemoth. It started back in 1984 with a hilarious film about ghost-catching scientists, however its success stemmed from more than just humor. People loved the quirky characters and the funny story.
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
After the first movie, Ghostbusters became a cultural phenomenon, spawning sequels, animated series, video games, and tons of merchandise — becoming $959 million worth iconic franchise (via The Numbers). In its wake, however, not every addition to it has been a hit with fans.

The reboot had trouble finding the right balance of humor and scares, while the sequel didn’t bring anything new to the table. These movies show how...

The “Ghostbusters” franchise has had a tumultuous run in the 21st century. Paul Feig’s attempt to retool the series with an all-star cast of female comedians including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones with 2016’s “Ghostbusters” was a fairly standard studio reboot, but online backlash about the gender-swapped casting launched a culture war fight that arguably exceeded the actual film in terms of influence.
The series was re-launched again when Jason Reitman directed 2019’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” but the “Up in the Air” director quickly found himself in hot water when his comments about planning to “hand the movie back to the fans” were interpreted by many as a sexist dig at the female-led reboot.

Ghostbusters Franchise Ranked On Rotten Tomatoes: From Paul Rudd’s Frozen Empire To Bill Murray’s Og Film; Find Out Which Film Has The Highest Rating. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
The Ghostbusters franchise is once again back with the sequel of the reboot that came out in 2021. The original film came out in the 80s and was not only commercially successful but critically praised. The latest film in the franchise, Frozen Empire, has yet to have a worldwide release; it premiered in New York City’s AMC theatres a few days back and came out across the USA on Friday.
The latest release stars Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and others from 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The 2024 film reunites the old and the new cast. The Og characters returned for this recent film, including Bill Murray and Annie Potts. Gil Kenan directed it, which is currently the franchise’s lowest-rated film.

This weekend sees the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Some will say this is the fourth Ghostbusters film, but of course, we all know it’s actually the fifth, as you have to count Paul Feig’s reboot to a certain extent. While critics have been cool on Gil Kenan’s addition to the franchise, fans seem to really be enjoying the film, which gives the Og Ghostbusters enhanced roles. All this got me thinking: what are the best Ghostbusters films? So, I had to do it – here’s my Ghostbusters Movies Ranked list. I’m sure this will inspire a little debate, so let me know what you think of this list in the comments below – even if you hate it. Note that this list is from worst to best.
Ghostbusters (2016):
Let me be clear: I didn’t hate Paul Feig’s female-led reboot as much as a lot of people did.

You probably already know what will be number one on this list. The “Ghostbusters” franchise has gone through its ups and downs, reboots and legacyquels. But as the first film approaches its 40th anniversary this June, there’s little doubt in anybody’s mind that it remains the definitive ghost-catching movie of them all.
In the early ’80s, Dan Aykroyd — then just fresh off his stint as an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member — was inspired by his own belief in the supernatural to write a script about a group of eccentric academics who start a pest-control business where the “pests” they’re catching are malevolent spirits. Recruiting former “SNL” castmate Bill Murray to star, comedian Harold Ramis to help rewrite the screenplay, and “Meatballs” and “Stripes” filmmaker Ivan Reitman to direct. The final film, which hit theaters in 1984, starred Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the four Ghostbusters,...

This post contains spoilers for the first season of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
It's been nearly five years since "Game of Thrones" viewers said goodbye to the ambitious fantasy epic that headlined HBO's lineup for the better part of the 2010s. In that time, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss started developing a deeply controversial (now nixed) series called "Confederate," executive produced "The Chair" (a short-lived Netflix show about academia), directed a Leslie Jones standup special, and came under scrutiny for their lack of preparedness while making "Thrones."
Now, after five years of work on varyingly successful stray projects, Benioff and Weiss are back with co-creator credits on another ambitious genre story based on multiple beloved books. This time around, they're putting their spin on Liu Cixin's "3 Body Problem" alongside co-creator Alexander Woo. While the two shows actually couldn't be more different, it's impossible not to...

The Ghostbusters franchise has never seen complete success in its tenure. While the original Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray has been a cult classic that has been paid tribute to and has been parodied multiple times over the years, the subsequent films have been a hit or miss. It hit a new low with the all-female reboot starring prominent SNL alumni.
However, the franchise seems to have gone further down the hole as its latest entry Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire gets the franchise’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score. The film came on the heels of the well-received Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which starred Paul Rudd and a new cast. Despite the presence of the beloved characters and the return of the Og Ghostbusters, the new film seems to be unimpressive. However, fans still seem to be excited.

Sony’s $100 million sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is looking at a $45 million opening at the domestic box office this week, give or take. The previous installment, Ghostbusters: Afterlife — released during the pandemic in 2021, directed by Jason Reitman and produced by the late Ghostbusters filmmaker Ivan Reitman — opened to $44M and legged out to $129M domestic.
Through four movies, the Ghostbusters franchise box office stands at $945.2M; the fifth title easily will put the brand past the $1 billion mark globally, if not this weekend then shortly thereafter.
‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is playing at 4,300 theaters and will have all the PLFs and a majority of the Imax screens (some still will be playing Dune: Part Two). Previews start at 2 p.m. Thursday in roughly 3,600 locations. Essentially, what we have here is more theatrical product serving the spring break audience, this Friday seeing 15% of K-12 schools off and 15% colleges on break,...

Paul Rudd is back for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and this time, he’s in the drivers seat of the iconic Ecto-1 vehicle.
Following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the franchise picks up with an ancient artifact unleashing an evil force, and Ghostbusters new and old join forces to save the world from a second ice age. Original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson — who appeared briefly in Afterlife — return to their classic roles, starring alongside Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace.
“It was so great getting to work with them on this,” Rudd told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s New York premiere on Thursday of working with the trio. “It’s so surreal honestly. I’ve been watching Ghostbusters my whole life and I’m such a fan of theirs and a fan of the film, to be part of it is a thrill, a total thrill.

Our Flag Means Death has officially “reached the end of the road,” Series creator David Jenkins has revealed on Instagram that the period comedy has failed to find a new home following its cancellation on Max in January after two seasons.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins wrote. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew. Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss.”
Jenkins continued. “To you wonderful fans: thank you. You are lovely and earnest. Those kinds of things feel in short supply at times. But they aren’t.

Taraji P. Henson is going to keep telling her truth.
As she took the stage at the 2024 ABFF Honors on Sunday night, “The Color Purple” star pointed to a tattoo on her left bicep that spells out those words exactly: “The Truth.”
“If you are alive and God blessed you with another day to live, it is your job to tell your truth,” Henson told the crowd gathered for the American Black Film Festival’s marquee gala. “Because by you telling your truth, you set yourself free and somebody else free. When we stay quiet, nothing changes. The squeaky wheel gets fixed.”
That ideology is something Henson’s learned to keep close over the years, particularly when it comes to navigating Hollywood.

Sometimes it seemed like Carl Weathers could do anything. The football star-turned-actor also directed a fair number of television episodes (including two episodes of "The Mandalorian") and worked as a producer, extending his experience into all parts of entertainment. He worked with an incredible range of talent and touched many lives even beyond those he interacted with directly, making his passing a massive blow to anyone who loves movies or TV. The absolute titan sadly died yesterday at the age of 76, and many of the people who he worked with and who were inspired by him took to social media to share their feelings about the late, great man.
The outpouring of love included words from co-stars like Pedro Pascal and Jesse Ventura, along with regular collaborators like Adam Sandler, whom Weathers worked with on movies like "Happy Gilmore," "Little Nicky," and "Eight Crazy Nights." There's a Carl Weathers-shaped hole in the world,...

Comedy Central is reaching back to the past to keep its long-running “The Daily Show” going in the present.
After scuttling a months-long search for a new host, the Paramount Global network said it has enlisted Jon Stewart, who presided over the late-night mainstay’s most popular era, to serve as its host on Monday nights throughout the 2024 election cycle and to run the program. He is expected to play an oversight role at “Daily” that could extend through 2025, and will start his on-air duties February 12. Various “Daily Show” correspondents will host the program Tuesday through Thursday nights, and Jen Flanz, the current executive producer, will continue her duties on the show.
“Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,...

Jon Stewart will make a surprising return to The Daily Show, 25 years after starting on the show. He will host the Comedy Central late-night show one night a week through the 2024 election cycle.
The news comes eight years after he stepped down from hosting the show, which revolutionized late-night television and brought through the likes of Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Samantha Bee and Steve Carell.

Deadline told you back in November that one of the ideas floated for a new host was to bring in a major name to front the show through the election. Stewart will host on Monday nights, which are believed to be the show’s most watched day and gives him plenty of news from the weekend to catch up.

Jon Stewart is returning as the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” Before you get too excited, the assignment is part-time, and the plan is for him to stay on as host through the November 2024 presidential election cycle, and EP at least through 2025.
Stewart will host the program only on Mondays, but executive produce every episode. The other evenings will be hosted by a rotating panel of the show’s “All-Star Correspondents.” If you’re wondering why Stewart is taking the Monday slot, it’s because that’s traditionally the most-watched “Daily Show” episode of the week, and acts as catch up for all the news that’s gone on over the weekend.
Although “The Daily Show” began in 1996 with Craig Kilborn as its host, the show rose in the public consciousness during Stewart’s time hosting from 1999 to 2015. Under Kilborn, the show was mostly irreverent and focused on pop culture.

Jon Stewart is back at The Daily Show. After a yearlong search for Trevor Noah’s replacement, the longtime host and Noah’s predecessor has agreed to return on Monday nights through the 2024 election.
The new setup, a major coup for the show and for parent company Paramount, is set to begin Feb. 12. For the remainder of the week, the Comedy Central series will rely on a team of correspondents, which are likely to include Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Dulcé Sloan. Stewart, who spent 16 years at the show, the majority of them Emmy-winning, will be heavily involved as an executive producer on the other nights as well. The move comes after Stewart prematurely exited his Apple TV+ show, The Problem, following creative differences between the iPhone maker and its host over potential topics and guests.

After holding a year-long bake-off among various celebrities to find the next host of its signature “The Daily Show,” Comedy Central is going to try a new recipe.
When the program returns from a hiatus, it is expected to rely heavily on a team of correspondents to lead each night, according to three people familiar with the matter, though it is not clear if the network has struck upon its final assemblage of talent. “Daily Show” could also rely on guest appearances by some of the celebrities who have hosted the program since Trevor Noah, the last permanent presence behind the desk, quit abruptly in late 2022.
Those looking for an immediate successor for Noah won’t find one — at least, not yet.

Comedy Central is set to share a long-awaited update on the next chapter for “The Daily Show” next week.
The announcement, which follows the late night program winning a Primetime Emmy Award on Monday for Outstanding Talk Series, comes as the network has been searching for a permanent replacement for Trevor Noah for over a year. Noah, who took over hosting duties from Jon Stewart in 2015, exited the show in December 2022.
During the Emmys, former “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. could be seen mouthing “Please hire a host” during Noah’s acceptance speech. Wood himself retweeted the clip, with the caption, “Chill, fam I was trying to do that in the low.”
“We are grateful to the Television Academy for recognizing our incredibly talented team and want to take this week to honor and thank them,” a Comedy Central spokesperson told TheWrap. “Next week, we’ll be sharing our...

Exclusive: The Daily Show was a surprise winner at the Emmys on Monday night.
The Comedy Central series won the award for Outstanding Talk Series for Trevor Noah’s final season, an emotional end to his seven-year run. Many expected Stephen Colbert to win for The Late Show or Jimmy Kimmel Live! but it was Noah that picked up the award, becoming the first Black man to lead a show to victory in the category.
Afterwards, a number of questions were directed towards Noah and the team about the future of The Daily Show, a fair ask given that it has now been over a year since Noah left the show.
Deadline understands that over the next few months, the focus will be on its correspondents to lead the show through this election year, rather than another phalanx of celebrity guest hosts.
This plays into the idea that the show...
