Was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou
Gehrig's disease, in October 2001. By February 2004 he had lost his
ability to speak and lost strength in his arms and legs. He had to type
letters into a hand-held computer and have the computer speak the
words. Right before the Masters in April 2003, he accepted the Ben
Hogan Award from the Golf Writers Association of America, awarded to a
player who remains active in golf despite a physical handicap or
serious illness.
