Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

As Reno 911! reaches its 20th anniversary, the cops of the (fortunately fictional) Reno Sheriff’s Department are as inept and ineffectual as ever. Reno 911! premiered on Comedy Central on July 23, 2003, with co-creators Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Robert Ben Garant playing cops alongside Niecy Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and other comedic talents. The mockumentary series aired six seasons on Comedy Central, wrapping up its linear run in 2009. But then it got a revival on Quibi in 2020 and squeezed in a seventh season before that short-form streaming platform shut down. After Quibi’s demise, the eighth season landed on The Roku Channel. Along the way, there’s also been a Reno 911! theatrical release, a Paramount+ movie, and a Comedy Central movie. Kenney-Silver isn’t ruling out future installments, either. “It’s like coming home, I think, for all of us,” she told ScreenRant in December. “It’s like coming home,...

Variety’s annual TV FYC Fest was packed with big names and your favorite stars from the small screen. Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) made a rare appearance to accept the Legacy Award, Brooke Shields spoke passionately about the reality of co-existing in the world of social media and Kerry Washington (“UnPrisoned”) joined a collective of equally hilarious actresses including Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”) and Gina Rodriguez (“Dead To Me”) to discuss forging vanity for laughs and embracing the “messy” woman.
The all-day discussion also tackled the state of television today amid a writers strike and an ever-changing landscape of streaming. We’ve rounded up the standout moments from Variety’s TV FYC Fest panels and presentations which brought out important — and at times hilarious — conversations about this season of shows.

The holidays are sizzlin’ in “Reno 911!: It’s a Wonderful Heist,” a Christmas-themed sequel to the Emmy-nominated “The Hunt for QAnon.” Can the Reno Sheriff’s Department score another bid for Best TV Movie?
Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is bemoaning his rotten luck – and Matt Damon’s Crypto.com ad – when Terry (Nick Swardson) arrives in the form of an angel to show the downtrodden lieutenant what Reno would look like had he never donned his iconic hotpants to patrol its streets. After delivering on the reference to Frank Capra’s 1946 classic, “It’s a Wonderful Heist” “unloads the funniest, weirdest gags that [Kerri Kenney-Silver] and Lennon can devise without resorting to cheap gimmicks, like character development or narrative tension,” writes Matt Schimkowitz (The A.V. His voice has become iconic and it’s never good news when he calls — but 2 million people had custom chats with Ghostface as part of the marketing campaign for Scream VI, a sign the idea rang true with fans.

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

Everyone's favorite globe-trotting, brown jacket-wearing, and ethically dubious archaeologist is returning to the spotlight. That's right: 12 years after being fired by the Smithsonian, Rip Digman is coming out of retirement and eager to prove he's still got what it takes to be a world-class "Archie." To quote the man, the myth, the legend himself in the newly-unveiled "Digman!" trailer, "The only dating I'm interested in ... is carbon dating."

Get ready to meet your new favorite archaeologist hero, Rip Digman! Comedy Central has revealed the first-look trailer for the animated series "Digman!" which stars Andy Samberg in the lead role. What's more, this is the first animated series ever to be written and produced by Samberg, along with his co-creator and showrunner Neil Campbell ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"). And rest assured, Samberg is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the cast goes.
The series is set in a world where archaeologists are massive celebrities and the coolest people on the planet. That premise, it turns out, was capable of getting some major talent to lend their voices. The A-list ensemble includes Clancy Brown ("Spongebob Squarepants"), Andy Daly ("Review"), Cole Escola ("Difficult People"), Harvey Guillen ("Harley Quinn"), Kirby Howell-Baptiste ("Queenpins"), Marc Evan Jackson ("The Good Place"), Rachel Kaly ("High Maintenance"), Kerri Kenney ("Reno 9-1-1"), Lauren Lapkus ("Jurassic World...

Since Reno 911! was canceled in 2009, following its six-season run on Comedy Central, Robert Ben Garant (who starred in and co-created the series alongside Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver) has always had a feeling the show had a second life. “Reno had been off the air for over 10 years,” says Garant of the effort to find a new home for the Cops spoof, which followed a bumbling crew of deputies in the Nevada city who attempt to uphold law and order — but often create their own disorder. “We edited together a highlight reel and tried to sell it, and everybody passed.”
That is, until Quibi came calling, and Garant and his colleagues realized that the now-shuttered shortform video platform would be the perfect place for the show. “We had one of our editors cut one of the old episodes down to seven minutes,...

When the Emmy Awards 2022 nominations were announced on July 12, producers were not included among the nominees in many categories. That is standard procedure by the Television Academy as they vet the possible producers. As of last night, those names have been added to the Emmys.com website.
Who are the 50+ celebrity producers who just received extra nominations? Many were expected, such as Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”).
Check out our list below, and you’ll also see some pleasant surprises. Although snubbed for acting categories, Selena Gomez, Ben Foster (“The Survivor”) and Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan: The Movie”) are now 2022 Emmy nominees.
All of these actors/actresses have additional nominations than what is currently indicated on IMDb (most for producing; some as hosts):

When Hulu’s “Maggie” dropped their whole season in July, I binged the whole thing.
Like many viewers, I found myself inexplicably drawn to the 13-episode comedy about the titular psychic (Rebecca Rittenhouse) who can see everyone’s future but her own — until she does a reading for Ben (David Del Rio) and sees the two of them getting married. A foretold happily ever after that seems too good to be true quickly unravels, throwing Ben and his girlfriend (Chloe Bridges) into the lives of Maggie and her parents (a superb Kerri Kenney-Silver and Chris Elliot). Less “That’s So Raven” and more “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” the premise is simple, silly, and sweet. It can feel at times as though the logical endpoint of the streaming revolution is a restaging of the TV landscape of, say, 1990, just atomized across vastly more players. It’s inevitable: With so much content, certain traditional, and perhaps little-missed, forms can’t help returning. You have, in shows like “The Dropout” and “WeCrashed,” highbrow (and well-made!) versions of ripped-from-the-headlines miniseries that used to draw ratings on networks; some of Netflix’s sub-”Stranger Things” genre content would feel right at home in a syndication block with “Xena” and “Hercules.” And now, with “Maggie,” its new series about a psychic looking for love from “Life in Pieces” vets Justin Adler and Maggie Mull, Hulu revives the tradition of the Tgif sitcom — for grownups, sort of.
Rebecca Rittenhouse, of “The Mindy Project,” plays Maggie, whose “That’s So Raven”-esque visions of the future provide her insight and curse her with social turbulence.

ABC’s Maggie has a new home: The romantic comedy, which was originally slated to air this season on the Alphabet network, is relocating to Hulu. According to our sister site Deadline, the decision to make the show a Hulu Original was the result of a lack of available timeslots on the broadcast net and a desire to get it in front of viewers. A premiere date has not been announced yet.

Maggie will no longer be putting down roots on ABC.
The single-camera comedy will now stream exclusively on Hulu, Deadline reports.
News of the decision comes as a bit of a surprise, but fellow broadcast networks have been moving shows earmarked for the linear networks to streaming.
CBS, in particular, moved both Evil and Seal Team to Paramount+, but both series has previously spent at least a full season on the linear network.
Deadline notes that ABC's decision was brought on due to a lack of schedule space to slot the Rebecca Rittenhouse midseason comedy.
It was one of four ABC pilots to nab series orders on the network last season.
The Wonder Years launched in the fall and has been a decent ratings performer, but Queens has largely been a disappointment in the traditional ratings.
ABC's comedy roster also includes Home Economics, Abbott Elementary, The Conners, black-ish, and The Goldbergs.

The upcoming ABC comedy series “Maggie” will now debut on Hulu rather than the broadcast network, Variety has confirmed.
The single-camera show was originally ordered to series at ABC in May 2021. A premiere date for the newly christened Hulu original will be announced at a later date.
This is the latest example of a show meant for broadcast to make the move to a streaming service owned by the broadcaster’s parent company. ViacomCBS recently moved the CBS dramas “Seal Team” and “Evil” to Paramount Plus after they had initially aired on broadcast. Meanwhile, Peacock has aired the comedy series “AP Bio” after it was canceled at NBC and debuted the drama “The Lost Symbol” after it was originally developed at NBC.

Exclusive: Single-camera comedy series Maggie, originally picked up by ABC for the 2021-22 season, now will stream exclusively on sibling Hulu in the U.S. as a Hulu Original. The decision, underscoring the blurring of the lines between linear and streaming at the major media companies, was made in order to get Maggie in front of audiences instead of keeping it on the bench because of a lack of available slots on the network.
A premiere date will be announced later.
Maggie, starring Rebecca Rittenhouse as a young woman trying to cope with life while coming to terms with her abilities as a psychic, was one of four ABC pilots ordered to series last May along with comedies The Wonder Years and Abbott Elementary and drama Queens.
On the comedy side, The Wonder Years got off to a strong start in the fall and, along with sophomore Home Economics, received full-season pickups in October.

Updated with new photos: It was a long, pandemic-impacted broadcast development cycle, with some pilots taking a year to get produced, but the broadcast networks have made their picks for new scripted series to debut in fall 2021 as well as the bulk of their decisions for new midseason 2022 shows.
The pandemic forced broadcast executives to think outside the traditional broadcast pilot model and rely more heavily on straight-to-series orders, often based on additional scripts, sometimes delivered through the opening of a writers room.
Check out Deadline’s gallery of new 2021-22 shows. Those picked up straight-to-series that have not produced a pilot and have no episodic art available, are represented by their top talent on or behind the camera.

It's been a whirlwind day for ABC.
We've had the renewals of fan-favorite series such as A Million Little Things, The Rookie, and The Conners, the cancellation of Call Your Mother, and now ABC is closing off the day with some series pickups!
Fun, right?
The Wonder Years reboot, which has been a lock for a pickup ever since it was announced, has nabbed a formal series pickup.
We also have another new comedy on the way to ABC next season in the form of Abbott Elementary.
Then there are new dramas, Maggie and Queens, which both sound like they'll be solid additions to the ABC lineup.
Get up to speed on what the shows will be about below.

Four days before ABC’s upfront presentation, the network has made its first new scripted series pickups for the 2021-22 season, with nods to music-themed drama Queens and comedies The Wonder Years, Maggie and Abbott Elementary.
Queens, headlined by Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Pepi Sonuga, and the Wonder Years reboot, from Saladin Patterson, the original series’ Fred Savage and Lee Daniels, emerged as frontrunners at the script stage and remained strong during casting, production as well as screening and testing of the finished pilots.
Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary also was an early standout, while Maggie Mull and Justin Adler’s Maggie, headlined by Rebecca Rittenhouse, proved a textbook dark horse, staying largely under the radar until a very strong showing during screenings.
ABC has already passed on a number of pilots, including comedy Adopted, and expect more pilot passes this afternoon, while some pilots will remain in active consideration for midseason.

ABC has given out series orders to the reboot of “The Wonder Years,” drama series “Queens,” and comedies “Maggie” and “Abbott Elementary.”
