- In the late 1920s, Key became romantically involved with silent film star Buster Keaton, who was married. According to the Keaton biography written by Marion Meade, Keaton attempted to call off the relationship but Key flew into a rage and destroyed his MGM dressing room. A friend of Keaton's heard about the tantrum and sent him a telegram saying, "Congratulations. Hear you are off Key."

- A great-great granddaughter of Francis Scott Key (composer of "The Star Spangled Banner") and a distant cousin of author F. Scott Fitzgerald.
- Under contract with MGM in the 1920's and eventually fired by the studio as a result of her fiery temper off-stage. She ended up destitute, unable to pay a fine after being arrested for drunk driving in 1941.
- In the 1920s she owned a duplex in Hollywood. She lived in one side and rented the other.
