Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) revisits his Australia feature film and transforms the nearly three-hour epic into the six-episode series Faraway Downs. The limited series will include an hour of footage that didn’t make the film’s final cut, as well as a different ending.
“I got the idea and started to relook at the footage and realized I’ve shot enough to do it as episodic storytelling through a revisiting of the piece, not necessarily as a better film than Australia, but a different variation on the themes,” explained Luhrmann in an interview with TheWrap. “I was able to use the strengths of episodic storytelling to breathe those things out and explore them in a stronger way.”
The feature film, and now the Hulu limited series it spawned, stars Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, and Ben Mendelsohn. 2008’s Australia, which currently sits at 54% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Baz Luhrmann is returning to the Outback (and the cutting room floor) for limited series “Faraway Downs.”
The auteur recut 2008 epic “Australia” into a six-part Hulu limited series. The show follows an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) and a rough-hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) who join forces to protect the million-acre cattle ranch of her late husband.
The official synopsis reads: Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called Faraway Downs. Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown), plots to take her land and she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Jackman) to protect her ranch. Baz Luhrmann is looking at the benefits of streaming content.
The “Elvis” director recut his 2008 epic “Australia” for a Hulu limited series titled “Faraway Downs.” The film followed an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a cattle range run by a cattle drover (Hugh Jackman). The limited series will have a new ending and a new soundtrack; “Australia” originally shot three endings, with only one making it into the theatrical release.
“I was inspired to re-approach my film ‘Australia’ to create ‘Faraway Downs’ because of the way episodic storytelling has been reinvigorated by the streaming world,” Luhrmann said in a press statement. “With over two million feet of film from the original piece, my team and I were able to revisit anew the central themes of the work.”
Six-episode limited series “Faraway Downs” will premiere at the closing night of the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival October 21, with Luhrmann in attendance.

First Quentin Tarantino adapted “The Hateful Eight” into a Netflix “miniseries.” Now, Baz Luhrmann is revisiting his 2008 sprawling period piece “Australia” with an upcoming recut limited series for Hulu.
The film, which starred Nicole Kidman as an English aristocrat who inherits a cattle range run by a cattle drover (Hugh Jackman), is being reimagined as a six-episode miniseries titled “Faraway Downs.” The Hulu project will entirely use recut footage from Luhrmann’s original film, with a new ending and updated soundtrack. Luhrmann previously said “Australia” had shot three endings, with only one making it into the theatrical release. “Faraway Downs” is set to premiere this winter on Hulu, with streaming rights on Disney+ and Starz+ internationally.

Fresh off the success of “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann announced today that he will reimagine his 2008 film “Australia” into a six-part Hulu series called “Faraway Downs.”
The extended cut, which will debut in winter of this year, will feature new footage from the movie, which stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. It will also include a new ending and updated soundtrack.
“Faraway Downs” takes its title from the Australian cattle ranch that Kidman’s Lady Sarah Ashley inherits after the death of her husband in the film. After cattle barons devise a plan to steal her land, she hires a rugged cattle drover (Jackman) for protection. The romantic adventure film is set during World War II and told through the perspective of a bi-racial indigenous child named Nullah (Brandon Walters), a victim of the government’s family separation policy now known as the “Stolen Generations.”

Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia” is about to get the Snyder Cut treatment.
The 2008 epic love letter to his native country was a box office dud when it hit theaters over a decade ago and critics were mostly “meh” on the whole thing. But its reputation has grown over the years, helped by frequent showings on cable, streaming and the like, and it sounds as though the director wasn’t done tinkering with a movie that, charitably, was a whole lot better than people gave it credit for at the time.
Now, word comes from down under that “Australia” will be reimagined as a six-part limited series titled “Faraway Downs” to be released exclusively as a Hulu Original in the U.S. and a Star Original on Disney+ and Star+ in international markets. That means every sweeping shot of Australia’s rugged outbreak, every penetrating look of barely suppressed romantic longing...

The agency announced today it will share $620,000 between 11 films, five TV series and two online projects.
These projects come from both the existing Premium and Generate development funds. Generate Fund is for lower budget projects with an emphasis on new and emerging talent, or experienced talent wanting to take creative risks. The Premium Fund is for higher budget projects of ambition and scale from successful screen content makers.
Projects pitched for Premium Plus funds – the additional development funding the agency announced in response to Covid-19 – are still being assessed.

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation wins every film category but two at the annual Australian awards ceremony.
The big budget Us-financed jazz age extravaganza The Great Gatsby won every film category but two at the annual Aacta (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television) Awards this evening Australian time in Sydney.
This included the best film gong, which goes to Australian producers Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Catherine Knapman and their Us counterparts Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher.
Luhrmann also scored best director and, with his high school friend and regular collaborator Craig Pearce, best adapted screenplay.
The only award The Great Gatsby could have won but didn’t was for best actress: that instead went to Rose Byrne for her small part — all the actors had small roles overall — in the bold anthology film The Turning, adapted from a book of short stories by popular novelist Tim Winton.
The Rocket, a festival hit made on a shoestring budget...

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.

“I want to write something new, something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald
From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. In his adaptation, the filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in 3 Dimensions, weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald’s text and relevant to now. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role.
In theaters on May 10th, “The Great Gatsby” follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.

If you listen to the show, you know that I’m nervous about Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming effort, The Great Gatsby. I’m unconvinced that Leo can pull of Gatsby, if I’m being honest, but more importantly, Luhrmann’s bent toward dropping stories into the same formula doesn’t seem in line with the story.
At any rate, it seems like some things are being managed well enough, if we just look at the images. I’ll give them Carey Mulligan though, she could be a good fit.
Will you be in line for this one on opening day?

On the heels of the announcement that director Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15th, comes official word that Grammy Award-winning musical artist Shawn “Jay Z” Carter has collaborated on the film and is serving as Executive Producer to bring the modern “Jazz Age” energy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s original text to the big screen, procuring, performing, producing and arranging for a soundtrack featuring some of the world’s top musical artists.
Jay Z’s contributions, woven amongst a score by long-time Luhrmann collaborator, composer Craig Armstrong, drive Gatsby’s champagne-infused dance floors, rumble in New York’s illegal speakeasies, and foreshadow the tragedy behind Gatsby’s “extraordinary gift for hope.” To articulate the film’s “1920s-Meets-Now” sound, Jay Z also comes to “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack as a performer and contributor of original music.

From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann come the brand new trailers for The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker created his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. While I love the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow 1974 version, I’m eager to see what Luhrmann does with the latest big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald.s novel.
The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Baz Luhrmann’s anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby was originally set to come out this Christmas, but earlier in the summer, we heard that Warner Bros. had made the decision to push back the release until summer 2013.
The studio has now officially set that release date for 10th May, 2013 in the Us and Canada, which is thankfully a little earlier in the summer (given that, technically, May is still spring) than I was expecting. And really, with this film, the sooner the better.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan star as the fantastic leads, supported by the excellent Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Amitabh Bachchan, and Elizabeth Debicki.

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has long been one of the most anticipated films of the year, with the anticipation heightening further still after the fantastic first trailer that landed back in May.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire in the leads, the film was to be released on Christmas Day this year in the Us, putting it in prime position for the Academy Awards next February, but now Warner Bros. have released a statement announcing that they will be moving it from its Christmas slot to a yet-to-be-decided prime-time slot in the summer of next year.
The decision can’t have been an easy one. On the one hand, this December has an incredibly packed line-up in the Us, with Hyde Park on Hudson, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Les Misérables, Zero Dark Thirty, Jack Reacher, This Is 40, The Impossible,...

In the extravagant nature of Jay Gatsby himself, Baz Luhrmann's 3D film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel is once again upping the level of grandeur and star power to an even higher level. Even if you don't quite realize it yet.
Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures announced the beginning of production on Luhrmann's Australia-based adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," touting stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Gatsby; Tobey Maguire, who plays Nick Carraway; Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton, who play Daisy and Tom Buchannan; and Isla Fisher, as well. That's a lot of Hollywood experience, indeed, but all their films put together can't come close to touching the filmography of their latest co-star.
Buried deep in the studios' press release was the news that Amitabh Bachchan was added to the cast, to play Meyer Wolfsheim, shadowy gambler and troublemaker. It's a small role, but a significant development.

Can it get any bigger than this? Ok, let's put it this way - Can it get any 'Greater' than this? What you are about to read below is unquestionably the biggest and the greatest announcement coming out of our Indian Film Industry. In what will go down as a defining moment in Indian cinema, the day we were patiently waiting for has arrived. The Great Gatsby marks Amitabh Bachchan's first ever main stream Hollywood movie to be directed by the Oscar nominee Buz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge). Mr. Bachchan plays Meyer Wolfsheim - a Jewish man Gatsby describes as a gambler who had fixed the World Series. Wolfsheim is a clear allusion to Arnold Rothstein, a New York crime kingpin who was notoriously blamed for the Black Sox Scandal which tainted the 1919 World Series. The Principal photography began this week on Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' The Great Gatsby.

Though director Baz Luhrmann wanted Ben Affleck to play Tom Buchanan in his 3D update of The Great Gatsby, the actor won't be taking part in the movie adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic. Luhrmann offered Affleck the role in early April and courted him hard. The problem was, the film will shoot in Australia, and the scheduling just didn't match up on Argo. Affleck is committed to direct that film, about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, in the Middle East. They tried to work it out but ultimately couldn't. So far, Luhrmann has commitments from Leonardo DiCaprio to play Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan to play Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire to play Nick Carraway. Warner Bros is in talks with Isla Fisher to play Myrtle, the wife of a gas-station owner who is cheating with Buchanan. Luhrmann is looking for another actor to play him. Word is he's...

Exclusive: Ben Affleck is in talks to play the role of Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, the Baz Luhrmann-directed 3D adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic at Warner Bros. Now, Affleck will have to work to fit this in. After starring in and directing The Town, he’s prepping to direct Argo, a film about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. But signs point toward him making time in his schedule to join Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in Gatsby. Both projects are at Warner Bros. Tom Buchanan is the husband of Daisy (Mulligan), in a role originated by Bruce Dern in the 1974 film. DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford starred in the original) and Maguire plays Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston in the 1974 pic). One’s big, one’s small, but both hold much promise for cinephiles all over the world. Two international directors, the Australian Baz Luhrmann and the German Tom Tykwer, have distributors for their respective films. Mind you, Luhrmann’s hasn’t started production while Tykwer’s is finished and ready for packaging.
Luhrmann’s much-hyped (and possibly three-dimensional) The Great Gatsby, starring Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, is being courted by Warner Bros, who’ll finance and provide worldwide distribution the project. Exclusive: While James Bond has gotten the lion's share of attention from studios this week, Jay Gatsby has also been making a stir around town. I'm told Warner Bros has emerged as the clear frontrunner to finance and take worldwide distribution on The Great Gatsby, the Baz Luhrmann-directed adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary classic. The film will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. The pieces are still coming together, but a deal could be done by Friday. Deals with the cast will follow, with DiCaprio furthest along in negotiations to play Gatsby. Red Wagon partners Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher have joined the project, and will produce with Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Catherine Knapman of Luhrmann/Bazmark Films. G Mac Brown will also produce. Luhrmann wrote the script with Craig Pearce. Given what is happening, recent reports that Luhrmann might not do The Great Gatsby seem completely unfounded.

- #55. Australia Director: Baz LurhmannWriters: Ronald Harwood, Stuart Beattie, Richard Flanagan and LurhmannProducers: G. Mac Brown (Unfaithful), Catherine Knapman and Luhrmann Distributor: 20th Century Fox The Gist: This romantic action-adventure set in northern Australia prior to World War II, centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. See It: Peroid piece has Oscar written all over it - yet I'm curious to see what kind of stylistic treatment this 130 million dollar production will get.
