Melbourne, Sep 3 (Ians) India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was the only player from the country selected in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League (Wbbl) overseas draft, held on Sunday. She was placed in the platinum category of the draft and was picked by Melbourne Renegades, who also drafted in West Indies captain Hayley Matthews.
Harmanpreet returns to the Renegades and the Wbbl after missing last season due to injury. She was the Player of the Tournament in Wbbl season seven, after being the Renegades’ leading run-scorer (406) and wicket-taker (15). She recently represented the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, and led the Mumbai Indians to the inaugural Women’s Ipl title earlier this year.
“I’m so pleased we got both of them and I’m looking forward to them working with us again this year. It was a tough decision – do we go Harmanpreet at pick three, or do we go Hayley.

London, Aug 30 (Ians) The England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) announced on Wednesday that it is increasing match fees for the women’s team to bring them in line with the men’s side match fees with immediate effect.
It means that the parity in match fees will take effect from England women’s upcoming white-ball home series against Sri Lanka. England also becomes the fourth cricketing nation after New Zealand, India and South Africa to equalise the match fees for its international men’s and women’s teams.
“The direction of travel for the women’s game has always been the most important thing, creating a sustainable product that people want to watch and play, and I’m sure this will make cricket an increasingly attractive sport to girls and young women as we continue to grow the game.”

New Delhi, Aug 8 (Ians) Former captain Nasser Hussain was impressed with how England’s women’s side fought back to draw the recent Ashes series against Australia, but he knows they must continue to evolve if they want to close the gap even further on the reigning Icc Women’s Cricket World Cup champions.
England showed their class by winning both the Odi and T20I components of the multi-format Ashes on home soil last month and defeat in the one-off Test in June meant the topsy-turvy series ended tied at eight points apiece as Australia retained the trophy for a fifth straight series.
There were plenty of positive signs for Heather Knight’s side and Hussain has challenged England to build on that performance and continue to improve ahead of the next Ashes series in Australia at the start of 2025.

Southampton, July 17 (Ians) Despite losing the chance of winning the Women’s Ashes after a three-run defeat to Australia in the second Odi at the Ageas Bowl, England captain Heather Knight said the ongoing series has been “the best series there has ever been in the history of the women’s game”.
Vice-captain Nat Sciver-Brunt hit an unbeaten 111, but it was not enough for England to chase down 283 as they finished at 279-7 in their 50 overs. England needed 15 runs from the final over, but Jess Jonassen held her nerve by conceding 11 runs for Australia to retain Women’s Ashes.
“It was an unbelievable game again, wasn’t it? It has got to be the best series there has ever been in the history of the women’s game. Two sides going toe to toe, fighting it out and every game has been pretty close.”
“The way Nat played was unbelievable.

London, July 11 (Ians) Claiming that “it is time for the global game to reset”, the McC World Cricket Committee (Wcc) has proposed for the International Cricket Council (Icc) to establish two strategic funds — one to sustain the Test cricket programme across the world and other for the development of the women’s game.
To help identify nations in need of support to sustain Test cricket, the Wcc has asked Icc to undertake a Test match financial audit to analyze the difference between operational costs and commercial.
This need could be subsequently addressed via a separate Test fund, established to protect the sanctity of Test match cricket, the Wcc recommended following the first meeting of 2023 in Dubai, in which it concluded that the game was at a crossroads with intervention required.
The committee has now released specific recommendations for the Icc to help ensure the long-term prosperity of the men’s and women’s international games.

Navi Mumbai, March 15 (Ians) Superb bowling by Ellyse Perry (3-16) and fine late-order hitting by Kanika Ahuja (46) and Richa Ghosh (31 not out) helped Royal Challengers Bangalore Women Up Warriorz by five wickets in the Women’s Premier League (Wpl) 2023 at the Dr Dy Patil Academy here on Wednesday.
Australia international Perry claimed the crucial wicket of compatriot Grace Harris, who had rescued Up Warriorz with a vital contribution of 46, and added the wickets of all-rounder Deepti Sharma (22) and Shweta Sehrawat (6) to help restrict them to 135 l out in the 19.3 overs. Sophie Devine had caused the early damage after skipper Smriti Mandhana won the toss and decided to bowl first.
In reply, Royal Challengers Bangalore had Devine blasting 14 runs in the first five balls of the opening over — hitting two fours and a six but fell to Grace Harris on the last ball, caught by Tahlia McGrath as she failed to keep a slog sweep down.

With losses in all of its five matches so far, the Smriti Mandhana-led side are under immense pressure to win the rest of its three games and hope for other results to go their way for making a miraculous entry into the playoffs.
Left-handed Smriti, also the opener for Rcb, has been a shadow of her fluent self with the bat, making only 88 runs in five innings averaging 17.60 at a strike rate of 117.33. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim believes one big knock from Smriti can give the turnaround Rcb need in their Wpl campaign.
"As a captain, you would be hoping to turn this around and I am sure such big players, they have a pride attached to their performances and it’s the first time in India, she’s playing for a franchise."

Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) Gujarat Giants captain Sneh Rana won the toss and elected to bat first against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Wpl 2023 match at Brabourne Stadium, here on Wednesday.
After winning the toss, Sneh said the playing eleven is unchanged from their three-wicket loss to Up Warriorz on Sunday.
“It’s a used pitch. Want to bat freely with our batting depth. The environment was very positive – the kind of cricket we played. I’m enjoying the role. It adds responsibility to your shoulders,” she added.
Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana said leg-spin all-rounder Poonam Khemnar will replace batter Disha Kasat in the playing eleven.
“Considering the wicket, I don’t mind doing both. But we would’ve loved to bat as well. We had the discussion as a bowling unit (about the short outfield dimensions). First two games weren’t the way we wanted to start. It’s 8 matches...

Bangalore’s overseas stars in Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Sophie Devine and Megan Schutt are yet to produce match-winning performances in the competition, something which former India men’s wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel believes is a tremendous concern for the Smriti Mandhana-led side.
"The biggest concern for Rcb is their overseas stars are not performing. They have invested heavily in their overseas players and they have not performed. Another thing is, whoever gets a start, should try to get a big one, which is something ailing in Rcb’s camp," said Patel while replying to a question from Ians in a virtual interaction facilitated by Sports18 and JioCinema.
With talk on social media comparing the Rcb women’s team to their male Ipl counterparts in terms of being strong on paper but not firing collectively as a unit, Patel thinks the side still has it in them to bounce back from twin defeats.

Mumbai, March 7 (Ians) After leading Mumbai Indians to a nine-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Wpl 2023 at Brabourne Stadium, off-spin all-rounder Hayley Matthews credited the freedom given by the franchise, which in turn has given her lots of confidence.
Hayley, picked in the acceleration round at her base price in the player auction last month after going unsold in the first round, dismissed Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana, Heather Knight and Richa Ghosh to be Mumbai’s best bowler with figures of 3-28, before smashing a stunning 77 not out off 38 balls to give her team second big win in a row and top spot in the points table.
“There wasn’t much difference, probably I was able to bat a bit longer today, but I think the freedom in this Mumbai Indians team has given me plenty of confidence. They’re going well at the moment, and the ball is coming on nicely.

Nat, on the other hand, was the perfect partner to Hayley by smashing 55 not out off 29 balls, including nine fours and a six.

Mumbai, March 6 (Ians) Off-spin all-rounder Hayley Matthews picked three wickets to lead a superb bowling show for Mumbai Indians as they bowled out Royal Challengers Bangalore for 155 in the fourth match of Wpl 2023 at Brabourne Stadium on Monday.
Bangalore had a flying start as they reached 39/0. But Hayley and Saika Ishaque making double strikes meant they went to 43/4. It took decent cameos from Kanika Ahuja, Richa Ghosh, Shreyanka Patil and Megan Schutt to take Bangalore past 150.
For Mumbai, Hayley was the standout bowler with 3-28, while Saika and Amelia Kerr took two wickets each as the spinners took seven wickets combined. Bangalore captain Smriti Mandhana began by dancing down the pitch to punch Hayley through extra cover for a boundary. Her opening partner Sophie Devine ended the opening over with a slog-sweep going for a six.

Mumbai, March 5 (Ians) Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and elected to bowl first against Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals in the second match of Women’s Premier League (Wpl) 2023 at Brabourne Stadium, here on Sunday.
After winning the toss, Smriti said she elected to field first as there’s some grass on the fresh wicket and wanted to make use of the conditions first.
“We’ve got some quality seamers. Four overseas players are Perry, Schutt, Sophie and Heather Knight. This is a great platform, we were waiting for it and this is a chance to showcase our talent,” she said.
“This is a huge thing for all women’s cricketers now and women’s cricketers yet to come. We represent all of the current players and all of the future players. We’ve had a quick turnaround; the team is looking in good stead and...

During the player auction held earlier in the month, Bangalore made some big-ticket purchases in terms of overseas players.
They got in Australia’s premier all-rounder Ellyse Perry and her pace counterpart Megan Schutt along with Wbbl regular Erin Burns, as well as England, and New Zealand skippers Heather Knight, and Sophie Devine, apart from South Africa’s leg-spin all-rounder Dane van Niekerk.
But who gets into the four overseas slots out of six marquee players in the playing eleven throughout the 22-game tournament starting from March 4 and running till March 26 is a question which will keep the Bangalore think-tank on their toes, something which was agreed by Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket at Rcb.
"It’s something which will be relevant throughout the whole tournament. But when you look at the programme and see four games in the first six days, it’s highly likely all six will play a role at some stage.

Cape Town, Feb 25 (Ians) Aggressive, attacking and entertaining cricket has been at the forefront of England’s approach at the Icc Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. And while the semifinal defeat to hosts South Africa will sting, it was not their style of play that proved Englands undoing.
The playing style of the England women’s team under coach Jon Lewis has clear parallels with the ‘Bazball’ approach of the England men’s Test team.
Skipper Heather Knight feels that this new approach and the confidence her players gained from such tactics will boost the team’s confidence in future.
Taking the positive option and looking to assert themselves in the game, England’s batters followed the same blueprint in Friday’s semifinal at Cape Town, with openers Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt tearing out of the blocks.
England’s opening pair smashed 53 in five overs before Dunkley was dismissed,...

Cape Town, Feb 24 (Ians) South Africa edged England in a thrilling semifinal to reach their first-ever Icc Womens T20 World Cup final with a six-run win here on Friday.
Tazmin Brits’s 68 set South Africa up for a commanding total of 164 for four, as she combined for a 96-run opening stand with Laura Wolvaardt, with no bowler safe from an onslaught.
England looked to respond in the same vein, racing to 50 runs before wickets regularly halted their progress, Brits taking four catches in the performance of a lifetime.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight tried to steer England home, but they could not deny South Africa a place in the showpiece on home soil.
Brits and Wolvaardt showed none of the nerves on display against Bangladesh just three days ago as they set the tone for a run-fest. The duo started patiently, but flicked the switch for Charlie Dean’s first over,...

We felt in a great place in 2020 before...
