As Black artists’ roots in country music continue to be rediscovered following the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, the founders of the upcoming I Made Rock ‘N’ Roll Festival — which Janelle Monáe will headline on Saturday — are hoping the event will have a similar effect in the rock genre.
“We’re really on a mission to showcase the authorship of the creatives that helped to build American culture,” says Alan Bacon, who cofounded Ganggang, the Indianapolis-based creative advocacy firm behind the festival, with his wife Malina Simone Bacon in 2020. “Rock ‘n’ roll is a big piece of that as one of America’s genres and Black creatives and artists have such a strong history in the creating of that genre.”
It was that mission that piqued Monáe’s interest in performing at the Black rock fest, she tells The Hollywood Reporter, noting the similarities between the group and her Wondaland Arts Society.

NBCUniversal showed major love for its film division, primarily the highly anticipated Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-led “Wicked,” during its 2024 upfront presentation Monday in New York.
While not the traditional venue for touting upcoming movies — as this week is all about wooing Madison Avenue to shell out big bucks for prime ad placement on TV — with film chief-turned-overall content boss Donna Langley on stage for her first upfront, the move was a natural moment for synergy.
Langley teed up a new trailer for “Wicked,” a treat just for those attending the presentation at Radio City Music Hall, and promised it will drop wide later this week.

Vampire Weekend appeared as the musical guest on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
The trio delivered polished renditions of “Gen X Cops” and “Capricorn,” two songs from their latest album, Only God Was Above Us. Seated center-stage with a piano, vocalist Ezra Koenig carried the rising and falling melody of “Gen X Cops,” performing the lyrics with a look of urgency in his eyes.

For the second song, “Capricorn,” Koenig donned a parlor guitar, and a small string section providing the driving engine on the verses. On the choruses, a growling guitar line entered, coloring the arrangement with its distorted wail. Watch both performances below.

For her third round of hosting duties on “Saturday Night Live,” “Mother” Maya Rudolph did not disappoint. Having been a cast member from 2000 to 2007, Rudolph is well acquainted with that 30 Rock stage, and has played a litany of memorable characters. In honor of Mother’s Day, current “SNL” cast-mates Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang joined Rudolph onstage to honor her legacy and declare her a true “Moth-errr”.
“You’re a 30 Rock legend,” Sherman said. “You’ve had your foot on our necks since Y2K.”
Rudolph was disbelieving of this praise at first, but Yang quickly interjected to second Sherman’s claim.
“You were the first to slay the house down boots queen!” he exclaimed to Rudolph.
“You have achieved extra-terrestrial mother status!” said Sherman.
“Me? Mother?” questioned Rudolph. “You’re right.”

Lala Kent recently called out fans of Vanderpump Rules after the finale. The last episode of the show was eventful, to say the least. Fans have seen Ariana refuse to talk to Tom. While the rest of the cast has worked on mending their friendships with Sandoval, Madix has been dismissive. Viewers also got to see Lala Kent go off about Ariana Madix during the last episode. Keep reading to see what Lala said.
Lala Kent Goes Off On Ariana Madix
Tom Sandoval tried to speak to Ariana Madix at Scheana’s party. However, this made Ariana mad, and she left the party and stopped filming. After, Lala and Scheana were both upset. Lala then went off about the situation.
“This happened to her. The world rallied around her, she now thinks she is Beyoncé. It’s bulls— that she can’t film with someone because she stays under the same roof.

Maya Rudolph returned to Saturday Night Live as host on the latest episode, and the former cast member reprising one of her most beloved sketches: Impersonating Beyoncé as guest on the chicken wing-eating YouTube interview series Hot Ones.
The original sketch aired back in 2021 when Rudolph served as guest host, with “Beyoncé” memorably wilting under the heat of the chicken wings. “This is the only thing that I attempted that I did not slay, and that bothered both me and my husband, my husband is Jay Z,” Rudolph’s Beyoncé...

Of course Maya Rudolph brought her Beyoncé impression back to Saturday Night Live this week… and of course she had to go back on Hot Ones.
Rudolph once again played the pop icon during her SNL hosting gig this week and tried to eat more painfully hot chicken wings as a guest on the talk show Hot Ones. (Rudolph’s Beyoncé previously visited Hot Ones in a March 2021 SNL sketch.) This time, Beyoncé — decked out in full Cowboy Carter gear with a cowboy hat — let host Sean Evans (played by Mikey Day) know right away: “It’s a pleasure for you to have me.

Maya Rudolph brought Beyoncé back to “Saturday Night Live,” reprising her impression to give Queen B another shot at the spicy chicken wing talk show “Hot Ones.”
Opposite Mikey Day’s take on host Sean Evans, Beyoncé returns for the challenging YouTube interview segment, cocky about eating the wings until they become uncomfortably hot. As things get more unbearable, she has increasingly difficult instructions for her assistant, played by Kenan Thompson.
“This wing is stompin’ my ass,” she says at one point. “Damn, my bones are hot. That wing was a real one. Ooh, you’re ’bout to make me sing — This ain’t Texas!”
Beyond the “Texas Hold ‘Em” nod, a highlight was Kenan enthusiastically squirting Beyoncé’s “$6,000 cocoa lotion” into her mouth to soothe the heat, a masterclass in bizarre physical humor.

Maya Rudolph is back as host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live and she’s doing what she does best—imitating Queen Beyoncé.
In her best “Texas Hold Em” ensemble, Rudolph appeared in a sketch as the multi-Grammy Award-winning artist on her second visit to the popular YouTube chat series Hot Ones, where celebrities eat spicy hot wings while being interviewed. Her first time in a Hot Ones sketch was three years ago.
“Giddy up, let’s go,” she tells Sean Evans (Mikey Day) as she prepares to sample some of the spiciest sauces she’s ever had. After her first taste, she says, “That’s a tasty wing and it’s not that spicy. I’m from Texas, baby. Your girl likes it caliente.”

It was all about mothers at the top of this week’s pre-Mother’s Day Saturday Night Live.
The variety show dispensed with its typical topical cold open for one that featured SNL castmembers sharing moments with their moms.
Kenan Thompson kicked off the show, appearing on the Studio 8H stage with his mom because, he said, “it’s “Mother’s Day in about 29 minutes,” which, she declared, meant there was still “plenty of time to buy a gift.”
“With so many upsetting stories in the world right now, we thought we’d take a break from a regular cold open and hear some heartwarming stories from our moms instead.”
Still Thompson’s mom said she wanted to see who would play Stormy Daniels in a cold open focused on the porn star’s testimony in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial. That wasn’t the only reference to...

Saturday Night Live celebrated Mother’s Day by declaring what we already knew: Maya Rudolph is mother.

Maya Rudolph opened the Mother’s Day episode of “Saturday Night Live” with a tribute to mothers — in every sense of the term.
Hosting the sketch show’s penultimate episode of the season, Rudolph began her monologue by noting she’s a four-time mom herself. “But Maya, look — you’re not just a mom,” cast member Bowen Yang reminded her. “You’re mother,” invoking the term’s use in queer slang to describe powerful, aspirational women. “You were the first to slay the house down boots, queen!”
“Who me, mother?” Rudolph asked, feigning shock. “You’re right!” The host then launched into a propulsive dance number, strutting through Studio 8H — also known as “House of Rockefeller” — in a reflective bodysuit while delivering lyrics like “Oops, I made you dance / Remember in that movie when I pooped my pants?” Other lines played on the many meanings of “mother”: “Who’s...

The Chi’s Emmett is a smooth talker, as he himself notes in this week’s midseason premiere. “I’ve got the gift of gab,” he confidently tells Jada and Darnell. “With women, not criminals!” his mother shoots back. It’s an important point, given the conversation that Emmett thinks he’s ready for by the end of the episode. (Spoiler alert: He has no idea how much worse things can get.)
And that’s really saying something, given that Emmett was already at a lifetime low, having just botched a murder attempt on the high-powered gangster who runs the South Side of Chicago.

NBC is keeping its new Suits hanging a while longer.
The network on Friday announced its schedule for the 2024-25 TV season, and the offshoot Suits: L.A. — which has yet to receive a series order — was notably absent from the lineup. However, the pilot is still in contention, with a decision to be made at a later date after execs screen the episode in June. If picked up to series, Suits: L.A. could air midseason or roll over to the 2025-26 season, the network notes.

Scotty McCreery knows that he shows up carrying a lot of baggage. But while critics and some fans grapple with that overload of material, another diametrically opposed trend is shaping up. For some modern pop artists, and a few veterans,...

Let’s just say that mama Beyoncé is allowing her daughter to take on more jobs and showcase her talents. What, if that astounding tour showed us anything, it’s that Blue Ivy is ready to shine in her own right.
The story may be Mufasa’s childhood, but Simba gets to make an appearance as well.
Blue Ivy – Makes Big Comeback After Sister Rumi Overtakes Her As Youngest Person To Chart On Billboard
Blue Ivy has been making her mark on both the music and fashion world, and now she’s got her sight set on breaking into the movie industry.
This won’t be Blue Ivy’s first narration work though, as the youngster’s talent was tapped to narrate the audiobook version of New York Times bestseller “Hair Love” by Matthew A. Cherry.

The Met Gala is always about who turned up, what they were wearing — and who didn’t show. This year, there were a number of fashionistas fans missed seeing on fashion’s biggest night.
Rihanna
Surprise! Always one of, if not the most anticipated guest at the Met Gala every year is RiRi. Though many had expected her to attend this year, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that she stayed home due to an unexpected bout with the flu following an appearance in Miami over the weekend for the Formula 1 race. The news, first reported by People, came as a shock and broke late in the night while the carpet was full of stars and photographers. Rihanna had even teased her strategy for this year’s event, telling Extra that she had planned to keep it “real simple.” The flu made it much more complicated.

Taylor Swift fans know all about her epic feud with Kim Kardashian. The tension between the two pop moguls began over a decade ago. And it continues into 2024 with Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department. Recently, Kardashian attended The Roast of Tom Brady to add a few jokes, and the crowd booed her. Here’s why some fans think the booing came from Swift fans.
The crowd possibly booed Kim Kardashian at Tom Brady’s roast because of Taylor Swift
The Roast of Tom Brady allowed famous folks to joke at former NFL quarterback Tom Brady’s expense. Kim Kardashian was welcomed to the stage by Kevin Hart to make a special toast. And she had more than a few zingers to throw against Brady. Unfortunately, the crowd wasn’t receptive when Kardashian walked to the microphone.
The media sensation was met with intense booing from the crowd.

In 2022, Nicholas Galitzine was on the main stage of “Coachella”, flanked by bandmates Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham Jr., Vik White, and Dakota Adan.
Surrounding them were 5,000 screaming fans, chanting at the top of their lungs, “August Moon! August Moon! August Moon!” For most of the guys, who are professional dancers, this was somewhat familiar, they’d performed for much bigger audiences, supporting stars like Beyoncé and Britney Spears, and dancing on national TV. But for Galitzine, this was all brand new.
Under the spotlight, the actor was playing the role of a world famous pop star — one fifth of a massively successful (fictional) boy band. So while the crowd was real, it helped that they weren’t actually in Indio, California for their set, but a couple thousand miles away on a chilly December morning in Atlanta, filming scenes for the Prime Video rom-com film, The Idea of You.

Donna Summer’s widower Bruce Sudano is reflecting on his legal back-and-forth with Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign over the usage of Summer’s Seventies classic “I Feel Love.”

Taylor Swift is very easily at a career peak right now, at a level that most artists won’t ever come close to. Her popularity has skyrocketed ever since her “Eras” tour, which is the highest grossing tour of all time (and isn’t even over yet). Swift’s 2024 has already been quite busy, starting with two Grammys for “Midnights” in February, including a fourth Album of the Year award, which made her the first artist to win that many AOTYs, an impressive feat considering Swift’s career is not even 20-years-old yet. On top of that, Swift put out another new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” that will likely also compete for a win in that category and others. Now that the album has had some time to marinate in the pop cultural landscape, how do her chances look?

On “Alien Superstar,” Beyoncé runs through a couple of definitions of who she is, “I’m one of one, I’m number one, I’m the only one,” and “Category: bad bitch, I’m the bar” among them. Following her lead, the French encyclopedic dictionary Petit Larousse Illustré has added the musician’s name as a proper noun in its 2024 update.

Over hisnearly 30-year career, Idris Elba has played Nelson Mandela, a Baltimore drug kingpin, cowboys past and present, and even the object of Beyoncé’s dangerous fantasy. How’s that for range?
A multihyphenate on-screen and off, the actor is impossible to pin down. He’s a magnetic screen presence who can toggle between mysterious and charming — so charming — with preternatural ease. Still, Elba seems to be most comfortable when he’s dwelling in the gray areas that make flawed characters more fully human. For proof, you need look no further than Dci John Luther, the rule-breaking copper that he portrayed over five seasons of television and now, a feature film. In Luther: The Fallen Sun, Elba returns to the role that earned him a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and four Emmy nominations for a new nail-biting chapter.

Barry Jenkins is defending himself over criticism for helming the Disney prequel Mufasa: The Lion King.
After the trailer for The Lion King prequel dropped, fans of the Moonlight director took shots at him over his involvement with the film.
One social media user on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, said Jenkins was “too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine.”
“There is nothing soulless about The Lion King,” Jenkins replied. “For decades children have sat in theaters all over the world experiencing collective grief for the first time, engaging Shakespeare for the first time, across aisles in myriad languages. A most potent vessel for communal empathy.”

Even before Beyoncé kicked off her solo career, it was clear that she was a legend-in-the-making. As the de facto leader of Destiny’s Child, she was a guiding light for the girl group and helped shepherd them to stardom in both the pop and R&b spaces. The group was at their height (and still very much together) as she launched her solo career, first with “Work It Out” for the Austin Powers in Goldmember soundtrack and then with more gusto on 2003’s “Crazy in Love.”

Barry Jenkins isn’t necessarily feeling the love from every social media commenter over his involvement in Mufasa: The Lion King after the Disney prequel released its first trailer this week.
After screening footage at CinemaCon earlier this month, the film’s trailer was released online Monday and features narration from Rafiki (John Kani) explaining that the movie offers the origin story for Mufasa, the lion patriarch featured in 1994’s animated The Lion King and Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic remake of the same name.
Jenkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share the trailer, and his post was greeted with both favorable responses and also some negative ones, with the criticism apparently stemming from backlash to Disney’s trend of reimagining its previous animation hits. One user wrote, “Barry, You’re too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

The first trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was released online yesterday, and when director Barry Jenkins took to social media to share the teaser, he opened himself up for quite a bit of criticism.
There seems to be a perception that Jenkins, who was nominated for an Academy Award for 2016's Best Picture winner Moonlight before going on to helm the critically-acclaimed If Beale Street Could Talk, has "sold out" by directing Disney's The Lion King prequel, which is seen by many as little more than a soulless cash-grab.
One response stated that Jenkins was "too good and talented for [Bob] Iger's soulless machine," while another - from someone who actually interviewed him when Moonlight premiered at TIFF - said the following:
