Here's a brief look – to be expanded – at Turner Classic Movies' June 2017 European Vacation Movie Series this evening, June 23. Tonight's destination of choice is Italy. Starring Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donahue as the opposite of Ugly Americans who find romance and heartbreak in the Italian capital, Delmer Daves' Rome Adventure (1962) was one of the key romantic movies of the 1960s. Angie Dickinson and Rossano Brazzi co-star. In all, Rome Adventure is the sort of movie that should please fans of Daves' Technicolor melodramas like A Summer Place, Parrish, and Susan Slade. Fans of his poetic Westerns – e.g., 3:10 to Yuma, The Hanging Tree – may (or may not) be disappointed with this particular Daves effort. As an aside, Rome Adventure was, for whatever reason, a sizable hit in … Brazil. Who knows, maybe that's why Rome Adventure co-star Brazzi would find himself playing a Brazilian – a macho, traditionalist coffee plantation owner,...

When Ben Affleck shows up in "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" as the Caped Crusader, it will be nothing short of an event. But 25 years ago, it was just as a big deal — if not more — when Tim Burton's "Batman" was gearing up to hit the big screen. Back then, the director's take on the comic book was seen as "dark" (at least compared to the campier incarnations) and the world was waiting to see Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson tangle. But how was the movie put together? Well, this vintage documentary will help. Running 25 minutes long — and still unavailable on home video — this UK production is hosted by Robert Wuhl (who plays Alexander Knox in the film), and features Burton, designer Anton Furst, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, producer Jon Peters, Bob Kane, and more talking about the making of the movie. Everything, the from power of the...

Char Glover has seemed impervious to elimination this season on "Project Runway." Now, after repeatedly dodging the axe, she has reached the final four. But does she really deserve her spot? -Break- 'Project Runway': Ghosts of runways past haunt street-chic challenge She was eliminated after a disastrous "Rock Wedding" challenge only to be rescued by the Tim Gunn Save. And for the last three weeks in a row, she has narrowly escaped elimination despite being in the bottom two. The judges hated her design for the "Muse on the Street" challenge, but they might have hated it even more if Tim Gunn hadn't again stepped in on her behalf, asking her fellow contestants if they would give her extra time to repair a catastrophic wardrobe malfunction. Gunn explained the mitigating circumstances to the judges, but they sent home the other low-scoring contestant, Alexander Knox, anyway. 'Project Runway' ...'...

Last week on "Project Runway," the designers worked with pint-sized models to create children's looks. This week presented them with yet another model twist: they had to recruits clients from Washington Square Park in New York City and design appropriate looks for them to wear on the runway. But this episode may ultimately be remembered for the way it hinged on a pair of unprecedented decisions by Tim Gunn. -Break- 'Project Runway' recap: Some of the 'American Girl' kids were not alright The first came when Gunn assessed the designers' progress in the middle of the two-day challenge. He didn't mince words with Alexander Knox, warning him that his strange blend of polka dots and colors was one of the most hideous things he had ever seen and that he must change it to have any hope of surviving. Alexander was understandably panic-stricken, but he took Gunn's advice to heart...

Alexander Knox has led our racetrack odds for "Project Runway" for the last three weeks in a row, but going into the ninth week of competition, our users have selected a new frontrunner: New Zealand-native Sean Kelly. He currently gets 5/1 odds to win, knocking Knox down to second place with 11/2 odds. -Break- 'Project Runway' Poll: Which designer do you Love the most? Our users were perhaps motivated by the fact that Sean has won three challenges in the last four weeks, including the recent "Rainway" challenge, when he shared a victory with overdue Kini Zamora. Sean wowed the judges with a dress that transformed in the rain from powdered dyes stitched into the fabric. Alexander, meanwhile, has yet to win a challenge. What's more, he has only finished among high scorers once and received low scores three times. And even though he ranks second in our winner predictions,...

Remember Bob the Goon? Lieutenant Eckhardt? Alexander Knox? We imagine if you are a fan of Tim Burton's 1989 blockbuster "Batman," then you certainly do, as well as key members of the cast and crew like Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger and Burton himself. But where were they before the Dark Knight came into their lives? And where are they now? Today, 25 years after the film's release, some of them are no longer with us. Others have seen their careers go up and down, but it's interesting that few involved with the film really saw their professional lives soar (though two would win Oscars within a decade of "Batman's" release). No one in the cast really "broke out," so to speak, and most of the crew was a London-based one that didn't really work with Burton before or after. When the 1992 sequel "Batman Returns" rolled around, he was...

There may have been a point, in late 1988, where Tim Burton began to wonder whether he'd bitten off more than he could chew.
Sure, the 30-year-old director had made feature films before - namely Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice - but those films were relatively low-budget. Small-scale. Made outside the glare of public and Hollywood studio scrutiny.
Batman, on the other hand, was being put together with a blinding media spotlight trained on it. Warner Bros had set aside somewhere around $30m to adapt DC Comics' beloved Caped Crusader for the silver screen, and both journalists and fans were following every step of its production with keen interest.
Most worryingly, as production on Batman got underway in October 1988, a vocal proportion of those fans were decidedly unhappy.

How do capes, cowls and cultural context intertwine in some of history’s more troublesome Batman movies?
Once upon a time on this site, we looked at Batman’s ability to offer social commentary to different cultural contexts; you can find that piece here. Through analysing the 1943 Batman serial, the 1960s Adam West TV show and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, we saw how the caped crusader had repeatedly held a mirror to his surrounding contextual issues.
In the 40s, the Bat was a government agent enlisted to bring down a newly-made Japanese villain. In the 60s, inspired by Warhol and Lichtenstein, he became a Pop Art icon, actually superseding the popularity of the comics and securing the character’s future. In The Dark Knight Christian Bale’s incarnation went to questionable lengths to bring down an unstoppable terrorist, reflecting the political scandals of the modern age.

While their scandalous love affair and subsequent marriage eclipsed the five collaborative films they made together, this month Criterion brings Roberto Rossellini’s Ingrid Bergman headlining Voyage trilogy to the collection, comprised of their first three ventures, Stromboli (1950), Europe ’51 (1952) and Journey To Italy (1954). None of these titles would be deemed a commercial success, even while several notable critics and filmmakers would champion them, such as Francois Truffaut and Eric Rohmer.
As their marriage crumbled after three children (one of whom would go on to become famed actress and model Isabella Rossellini), Bergman would eventually overcome the notoriety that had banished her from Hollywood to win two more Academy Awards, while Rossellini would go on to make other acclaimed titles, though the failures of his work with Bergman made it difficult to secure funding. While speculation rages about how much substance there is to talk of a big screen Doctor Who movie, we've decided to offer our casting services...
Settle down, now. Give your gnashing teeth a rest, and just admit that even if the prospect of Harry Potter director David Yates doing a big-screen reboot of Doctor Who drives you to distraction, you've still thought about it. Admit that you've considered who the Doctor would be in a big Hollywood-backed reboot.
Completely disregarding the argument about whether a new cinematic continuity is a good idea or not, any Whovian is going to have considered the idea before yesterday's scoop. As we're obviously all agreed that Christopher Walken should voice the Daleks (because that would be incredible), we've rounded up some of our favourites to take on the controls of the Tardis.
There are a few caveats to the list, naturally. It wouldn't be...

John Hurt makes a convincingly cerebral spook in the new film of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But in real life, if he were in charge of MI6, we'd be in trouble. He's too gregarious, too eager and far too puckish
John Hurt doesn't think he'd have made a good spy. "I'd have been terrible! Too transparent by half!" He scoffs happily, gimlet eyes a-twinkle. But surely actors and operatives share certain skills?
A big wise head waggle. "Don't forget there are two sides to performing. Finding the truth, but you also have to be transparent enough for the audience to see it. How many times have you seen a performance and thought: well, it seems to be meaning a great deal to you but it ain't coming across to me? It is to be shared. This isn't a grief for your own pleasure … Ah, coffee!"
A waiter glides into the hotel suite,...

The internet is clamoring once again about Joseph Gordon-Levitt being in a Batman film and this time it is the wonderment of who he could play in the film. Previous to the announcement of the film, fans, at least some, lobbied for the young actor to play The Riddler in the next film. Now Gordon-Levitt is actually attached to the movie with no knowledge on who he could be. One would sway away from the belief that the studio and Nolan would go with him as the Riddler or any villain for that matter. Tom Hardy is now Bane and Anne Hathaway is Catwoman. I do not think they there is room. So with that presumption, what character could Joseph Gordon-Levitt play in the upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises? I have compiled of list of characters either straight from the comics or some hybrid that would be perfect for the actor and the story.

It's a film that's cropped up a few times in recent weeks on the site, but perhaps the most interesting thing about Lethal Weapon 2 was that it was supposed to mark the end of Mel Gibson's Riggs character. However, the original plan, when Riggs is shot in the film, was that he'd die. That was what writer Shane Black had intended to happen,...

Erotikon (1920)
Forget 1920, this is an absolutely modern comedy about romance and sex, directed in Sweden by Mauritz Stiller. We should remember that when MGM brought Greta Garbo from Sweden in the mid-20s, she was almost baggage in the deal that hired Stiller, one of the sharpest and most sophisticated of silent directors, but a man who would be crushed by Hollywood. Stiller needs to be recovered (like his contemporary, Victor Sjöström), and Erotikon has an instinct for attraction and infidelity that simply couldn't be permitted in American films of the same period. It's also marvellous to see that, nearly 100 years ago, Swedish cinema was in love with its country's cool light and with actresses as warm but ambiguous as Tora Teje,...
