"I get to play it, and you get to listen to it – this instrument, this thing, this Force!" Greenwich Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an inspiring documentary film titled Let There Be Drums!, made by music doc filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann – who has years of experience in the music industry as he's the son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann. The film is a documentary about drummers, now being released in honor of the late Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters, who is interviewed in this film before he passed away. The world's greatest drummers all reflect on the art of drumming and how it has shaped their lives - including the nature of how music passes from generation to generation, and the role that drumming plays in human life. Featuring interviews with Ringo Starr from The Beatles, Stewart Copeland from The Police, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann from Grateful Dead,...

Justin Kreutzmann set out to make a standard documentary about drummers. After all, having Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann as his dad meant growing up on the road surrounded by rock stars and hippies. But once he started interviewing musicians for the film, named after the iconic Sandy Nelson composition “Let There Be Drums,” Kreutzmann stumbled upon something much more personal, leading him to “begrudgingly” come out from behind the camera and talk about his own upbringing.
“Let There Be Drums” is not a Grateful Dead documentary, and Kreutzmann says “you don’t have to be obsessed with drumming” to enjoy it. Through archival footage, interviews with musicians and their loved ones, and, of course, music, the film uses drumming as a vehicle to tell a more universal story — about community, resilience and family.
Speaking with Variety ahead of the doc’s release, Kreutzmann detailed the filmmaking process behind “Let...

Grateful Dead drummer and founding member Bill Kreutzmann is sitting out Dead and Company’s upcoming Playing in the Sand concerts in Mexico, citing personal health concerns, Kreutzmann announced on Monday.
“Playing in the Sand has become my favorite tour stop in recent years and there’s so much about it that’s just so great. And thus, it is with a heavy and still recovering heart that I have to relay a note that I received from my doctor this morning ordering me to sit this one out,” Kreutzmann wrote on Twitter.

As we wait—probably another year—for Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese (79 yesterday!) has not let a long stay in the edit bay get him down. Per Variety, he’ll reunite with Jonah Hill for an as-yet-untitled Jerry Garcia biopic “expected to chronicle the band’s rise amid the ’60s psychedelic counterculture movement.” Scripted by the reliable Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the project is moving forward with Apple and at the surviving members’ blessing: Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart are executive producing.
Though it’s early days and this wouldn’t be the first time in my life a Scorsese biopic falls through—anybody remember his attempts at a 3D Sinatra?—the inclusion of deep-pocketed Apple and remaining Dead crew are for sure a sign of upward mobility. And it would not be the master’s first dip in this river: in 2017 he...

Martin Scorsese is making a musical biopic about the Grateful Dead, with Jonah Hill set to star as the iconic rock band’s frontman Jerry Garcia.
The project reunites Scorsese and Hill, who worked together on “The Wolf of Wall Street.” In addition to directing, Scorsese will serve as a producer alongside Hill.
The still-untitled film is expected to chronicle the band’s formation in the Bay Area as the ’60s psychedelic counterculture movement started to take off. Known for popularizing the jam-band musical style, the Grateful Dead — whose devoted fans call themselves Deadheads — has remained one of the most influential music groups. Along with Garcia, founding members include Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. Though Garcia died 25 years ago of a heart attack, some surviving members have continued to go on tour.

When John Mayer took the moderator’s mantle on a Clubhouse talk on Tuesday night (April 27), one got the sense that the seven-time Grammy-winning musician was trying out material. Not shtick, per se, as the charismatic Mayer has no problem holding down a conversation on all manner of topics without prior preparation, but rather, Mayer took charge of a room of 3,000 listeners with the ease of a late-night host.
It’s no wonder, then, to learn that Mayer is nearing a deal with Paramount Plus to host a talk and performance series based on the format of the BBC’s long-running “Later with Jools Holland.”
Sources tell Variety that “Later With John Mayer” has been pitched to prospective broadcast partners as a series featuring performance segments as well as interviews with musicians, artists and other cultural figures in a setting designed to look like an after-hours club for musicians.

Dating back at least to 1977, when Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, and Linda Ronstadt performed during Jimmy Carter’s first day on the job — and all the way up to Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez at Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony — it hasn’t been unusual for rock and pop stars to play presidential inaugurations. Still, there was nothing quite like the sight, 12 years ago tonight, of the Grateful Dead jamming for Barack Obama.

To anyone who’s studied Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, their connection to jazz was unmistakable: From their own onstage improvising to collaborations with Branford Marsalis and Ornette Coleman, the Dead clearly saw jazz musicians as simpatico. But how far back did those bonds go? An upcoming, previously unreleased live set — GarciaLive Vol. 15: Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, May 21st, 1971 — provides a few more clues.

Choosing and justifying a list of essential Grateful Dead shows — 20, 200, or even 2,000 — is treacherous work. Passionate challenge from fans, especially hardcore Deadheads and veteran tape traders, is guaranteed. Endless debate over set-list minutiae is inevitable. In fact, there is only one definitive list of the Dead’s greatest concerts — and it includes every show they played, in every lineup, from their pizza-parlor-gig days as the Warlocks in 1965 until guitarist Jerry Garcia‘s death in 1995.

Writer-producer Donick Cary has spent his whole career near the top of the showbiz comedy heap, from stints on “Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Simpsons” to sitcoms like “Just Shoot Me!,” “New Girl,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Silicon Valley.” So it shouldn’t surprise that his first directorial feature, the documentary “Have a Good Trip,” is less a serious dive into its chosen subject than an excuse to have a lot of familiar-face colleagues and acquaintances serve up funny anecdotes.
Since those anecdotes are about hallucinogenic drug usage, this Netflix Original can hardly help but be entertaining. It also comes nicely kitted out with plentiful animation, campy archival snippets, comedy-sketch “reenactments” and more. But those looking for much in the way of real insight will find this amiable enterprise doesn’t stray very far from a general, standard-stoner-yuks tenor of “Omg I was So High!!!”

Grateful Dead isn’t just a band. It is a social phenomenon. But as a band, it had one major superpower, the greatest Pa system in the world. It is only fitting Z2 Comics would want to include them in their roster of music-affiliated graphic novels. Their upcoming Grateful Dead Origins chronicles the history of jamband culture.
“Jerry Garcia was an avid comic book enthusiast so it is incredibly fitting to have the Grateful Dead’s origin story told in graphic novel form,” Rhino Entertainment President Mark Pinkus, said in a statement. “Z2’s passion for the band’s music and mythology make them the perfect partner to bring the story to life. It has been inspiring to watch the novel’s artwork evolve over the last year and I’m excited that Dead Heads now get to have a preview.”

Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir planned out only two things before each of the thousands of concerts they played together in the Grateful Dead: The song they would begin with and the song they would end with. Everything else was decided in the moment. “While Jerry was singing, I had plenty of time to think about the next tune that I was going to do,” says Weir. “And while I was singing, he had plenty of time to think about what tune he was next going to do. We developed a feel for that.
