An adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a self-consciously quirky, Burton-esque dark comedy about a family of misfits living in 1960s New England. Sticking to the basic structure of its source novel, the film follows the trials of the eccentric Blackwood family as they cope with their outsider status and the intrusive meddling of a visiting cousin.
Directed by Stacie Passon, written by Mark Kruger, the film falls somewhere between a thriller and a comedy with a cool sense of irony lingering over events. Following a scandal involving the poisoning of their parents, sisters Merricat (Taissa Farmiga) and Constance (Alexandra Daddario) live with their Uncle Julian (Crispin Glover) in their secluded estate. Cut off from the world, they are o...

In Stacie Passon’s dynamic directorial debut “Concussion”, a housewife breaks free of her suburban bubble by taking on sex work in the city. With her sophomore feature “We Have Always Lived in the Castle,” adapted by Mark Kruger from the 1962 novel by Shirley Jackson, Passon offers a female protagonist who’s the antithesis of her previous one: Merricat Blackwood (Taissa Farmiga) can’t ensconce herself enough from the world outside.
(The heroine of “Concussion” spends most of the film renovating a Manhattan apartment, while Merricat builds her entire world within the walls of the family manse, meaning that someday, someone is going to craft a thesis with a title like “Inquire Within: Real Estate in the Films of Stacie Passon.”)

If the recent failure of films such as “The Little Stranger” and “Marrowbone” has taught us anything, it’s that audiences don’t seem as thrilled with good, bone-chilling Gothic mysteries as they once were. Today, when it comes to spine-tinglers, moviegoers seem to value jump scares and gore over psychological brooding. That hasn’t stopped filmmakers who, every few decades, revive the works of novelist Shirley Jackson. Her stories speak to a darker side of humanity. Stacie Passon, director of “We Have Always Lived in the Castle,” sharply channels the author’s atmosphere of dread, paranoia, and isolation, making the past feel prescient.
Socially awkward 18-year-old Mary Katherine Blackwood (Taissa Farmiga), nicknamed “Merricat” by her family, lives with her agoraphobic sister Constance (Alexandra Daddario) and anguished, barely lucid Uncle Julian (Crispin Glover) on the sprawling grounds of Blackwood Manor. Buried beneath yesterday’s confirmation that Sebastian Stan would reprise his role as The Winter Soldier for Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War was news that Stan had agreed terms to join We Have Always Lived in the Castle, the creepy supernatural thriller hailing from director Stacie Passon.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Alexandra Daddario and American Horror Story alum Taissa Farmiga will star opposite Sebastian Stan as two peculiar, agoraphobic sisters.
Based loosely on Shirley Jackson’s 1962 novel, it is the arrival of the siblings’ scheming cousin (Stan) that threatens the security of their family fortune, with the early teaser teeing up a domestic thriller peppered with supernatural elements:
“We Have Always Lived in the Castle follows an isolated family, which has already lost four members to poisoning, that uses rituals and talismans to keep itself away from hostile townspeople. Into this scenario arrives a distant cousin,...

While Shirley Jackson is perhaps best remembered for leaving an eerie imprint on the literary world with The Haunting of Hill House, she also sent shudders down readers’ spines with 1962’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The last book written by Jackson is now finding new life in a big screen adaptation that recently added Taissa Farmiga and Alexandra Daddario to its cast.
The news of Farmiga and Daddario’s casting comes from Borys Kit at THR, who reveals that the actresses have joined Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War) in the movie. According to THR, the duo will play “agoraphobic sisters who become divided by the cousin’s arrival.”

After writing for movies and TV shows as far back as 1995's "Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh," Mark Kruger is entering a new arena with the release of his first novel, "Overpowered." He's not shutting the door on his other work, though. He continues to serve as a writer and supervising producer on USA's "Necessary Roughness," and has a couple feature films he's working on.
Zap2it had the chance to talk to Kruger about his new book and more at Comic-Con 2013. "I've always wanted to write a novel," he says, "but it wasn't at the forefront of my brain." When he finally set out to do it, he didn't have to look far. "The genesis of ['Overpowered'], it was the first TV pilot I ever wrote."
Originally, Kruger had worked on the idea with director Wes Craven and Julie Plec, co-creator of "The Vampire Diaries." The pilot never materialized though.

Hideo Nakata is executive producing an American television show for NBC. No, it's not a series based on The Ring (although, imagine that). Instead, it's called Vines , about a family that takes over a winery, but there's something supernatural about the vineyard surrounding the place. The 4400 's Mark Kruger and Michael Aguilar developed the project, at first, as a feature, says Deadline. Looks like it's best suited for the small screen. Nakata may direct an episode or two.

The Remake Game
Just yesterday, we were re-examining the Heavy Metal comic book version of Outland adapted by our old boss (and legendary comics figure) Jim Steranko and wondering when someone would be silly enough to remake that 1981 Peter Hyams film. (Really! Not kidding!!) And then today, Variety reports that an Outland redux is going forward. Why?? It’s not that good a movie, and who today is better than Sean Connery? Nonetheless, Chad St. John is scripting a new version of this “High Noon in space” for Michael Davis to direct as a Warner Bros. release. When will the remake madness stop? If you must know more, see the link.

Shirley Jackson wrote the terrifying short story "The Lottery," not to mention the oft-filmed "The Haunting of Hill House." Now her novel "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" is set to be made into a film by Michael Douglas' Further Films from a screenplay by Mark Kruger. As put by the Hollywood Reporter: “Castle” revolves around the Blackwood family — primarily of sisters Merricat and Connie and their uncle Julian — who have been forced into seclusion after the mysterious lethal poisoning of several of their family members six years earlier. Merricat is the younger sister, caring for the agoraphobic Connie, while the ailing Julian increasingly is in the grip of his own obsessions. The plot is further complicated by the arrival of a dubious, long-lost cousin who seeks to secure the family’s fortune. The book apparently deals with the issue of agoraphobia. The 1966 Hugh Wheeler play differs strinkingly from the book,...

Shirley Jackson gave us one of the finest haunted house stories ever: "The Haunting of Hill House." The novel was adapted into the 1963 Robert Wise classic The Haunting . Now her '62 tale "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" is being primed for the screen by Michael Douglas' Further Films and Literal Media. Mark Kruger ( The 4400 ) has written the script. She, her sister and her uncle live in seclusion after their family members were poisoned by arsenic. Any horror fan worth his or her salt is very familiar with the name Shirley Jackson. Way back in the Sixties she was responsible for unleashing probably one of the greatest and most influential ghost stories of our time, The Haunting of Hill House, upon a terrified audience. Now decades after it was first released, her book We Have Always Lived in the Castle is set to get the big screen treatment.
THR reports that Michael Douglas' Further Films has hired Mark Kruger (producer/writer on "The 4400") to pen the screenplay for the adaptation, which revolves around sisters Merricat and Connie Blackwood and their uncle Julian, a not-so-normal family who have been forced to live in seclusion after several other members of their family ended up getting poisoned. Things go along as well as can be for our trio until a mysterious long-lost cousin shows up showing what...
