‘Feel the Beat’s’ Wolfgang Novogratz with Elissa Down.
Elissa Down’s teen dance movie Feel the Beat premieres worldwide on Netflix this week. Sofia Carson stars as April, a self-centred dancer who, after blowing a Broadway audition, reluctantly returns home and agrees to coach a squad of young misfits for a big competition.
The director tells If how she landed her first Netflix gig, which was produced by What Women Want’s Susan Cartsonis; collaborating with fellow Aussies, composer Michael Yezerski and editor Jane Moran; and how her career has ebbed and flowed since her debut film The Black Balloon.
Q: How did you get the gig?
A: I met with producer Susan Cartsonis to discuss the project and we connected right away. Susan responded to the vision I had for the movie and she then presented me to Netflix to pitch – which had to be done over Google...

It’s been nineteen years since Frank “Frankie Fingers” Carver (Nicolas Cage) has been a free man. He’s made the best of prison despite being there for a crime his mob boss Max (Dave Kenneth MacKinnon) committed. What other choice did he have? With his wife dead, his son (hopefully) a reformed junkie, and his money buried behind a home he no longer owns, there wasn’t much else to do but try and enjoy what little control he had over what was left. And since he was serving a life sentence for murder, it would of course mean one more tragic circumstance to earn this long sought after day in the sun. Rather than exoneration, Frank has been given clemency as a result of his own mortality. He’s dying.

Here’s a weird little Nicolas Cage trailer for you to check out for the upcoming film A Score to Settle. I can’t tell how serious I should take the movie. It seemed like a decent revenge story, but then got a little cheesy when Cage confronted the teenage hooligans. But Cage is super into it, so maybe we should be too. Here’s the synopsis for the film:
Diagnosed with a fatal condition, Frankie Carver (Nicolas Cage) is released from prison after serving 19 years of hard time. With only a short time left to live, Frankie must desperately try to make amends with the son he left behind while he plots a bloody course of revenge - tracking down his old gang to make them pay one by one.

"What if you get killed first?" "At least I get to take a few of them down with me..." Ready for more Cage madness? Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie action drama titled A Score to Settle, the latest from filmmaker Shawn Ku (Beautiful Boy). Nicolas Cage stars in this in another crazy indie role to go with all of his other crazy indie flicks recently. Cage plays an ex-enforcer for a local crime syndicate who has vowed to enact retribution on his mob bosses after 22 years of wrongful imprisonment. The only thing diverting his violent plans is a new found relationship to his beloved son. The full cast includes Benjamin Bratt, Noah Le Gros, Mohamed Karim, Karolina Wydra, & Ian Tracey. I'm not even sure just how much action this will have, but it definitely does look like it has the perfect amount of rage for Cage to rock.

For the past couple of years Egyptian star Mohamed Karim, who is known across the Middle East as a former host of talent show “The Voice of Arabia” and for roles in popular Ramadan soaps and local pics, has been pursuing a Hollywood career. He recently landed a plum role alongside Nicolas Cage in Highland Film Group’s indie action thriller “A Score to Settle,” directed by Shawn Ku, whose debut “Beautiful Boy” (not to be mistaken with the current Felix Van Groeningen pic by the same title) made a splash. Karim started dreaming about Hollywood while attending his final high-school year in L.A. He talked to Variety during the Cairo Film Festival about his struggles in the U.S. biz with racial stereotypes and why he’s happy to start breaking them with “A Score to Settle,” expected to hit U.S. screens next summer. The "Flowers In the Attic" saga rages on, as the sordid tales of the Dollanganger family get even more twisted in Lifetime's adaptation of "Seeds of Yesterday." Picking up many years after the explosive events of "If There Be Thorns," which aired last night, the latest installment finds Cathy and Chris reuniting with their three children for one of the most dangerous -- and yes, still incestuous -- get togethers ever. Anthony Konechny picks up the role of Jory Sheffield, Cathy's son with deceased dancer ex Julian, in the third sequel ... a role that required the former fitness competitor to get comfortable in a wheelchair and drop some of his muscle. "In the book, Jory does become paralyzed," Konechny tells toofab's Brian Particelli, without revealing too much about how the tragedy happens. "I was able to get a wheelchair a couple weeks before we started filming, take that out and...

Lifetime has officially greenlit "Seeds of Yesterday," the fourth and final telemovie in the "Flowers in the Attic" series based on the V.C. Andrews novels. The project is expected to air next year following the third one "If There Be Thorns" in early 2015.
Jason Lewis and Rachael Carpani will reprise their roles as Christopher and Cathy Dollangager from 'Thorns' in the fourth film. The pair take over from Mason Dye and Kiernan Shipka in the first film and Wyatt Nash and Rose McIver in the second.
In 'Seeds', the Dollangager family's deeply troubled relationships, dark secrets and tragedy come to a head in a way that will haunt them forever. James Maslow ("Big Time Rush") will join the cast as Bart Dollanganger.
Shawn Ku will direct from a screenplay written by Darren Stein. Lifetime confirms this will be the final work in the series adapted for the screen despite the...

Lifetime cannot get enough of Flowers in the Attic. After the success of the first film and its sequel, Petals on the Wind, Lifetime has greenlit Seeds of Yesterday, which, as fans of the books know, is the fourth installment in the series of novels from V.C. Andrews. Lifetime had previously set the premiere of the third chapter, If There Be Thorns. Here's the official description for Seeds of Yesterday: "The saga of the tormented Dollanganger family comes to an end in Seeds of Yesterday, based on the fourth and final book in V.C. Andrews’ series of novels that began with Flowers in the Attic.

The first item that needs mentioning is Sight & Sound's followup to last week's tweets and sneak peeks, "2011 in review: The full poll," 101 critics and curators listing their top five films and generally reflecting on the year that was. Editor Nick James introduces the bundle.
The second order of business would be the obligatory mention of David Fincher's commenting on the David Denby vs Scott Rudin brouhaha (briefly: the New Yorker critic reneged on his promise not to run a review of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo before the embargo would be lifted on December 13; the producer blew his top). Talking to Rene Rodriguez of the Miami Herald, Fincher naturally comes down on the side of his producer, but also adds: "Embargoes… look, if it were up to me, I wouldn't show movies to anybody before they were released…. Chicago – While Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin” meticulously chronicles the troubled upbringing that leads a kid to shoot up his school, Shawn Ku’s “Beautiful Boy” centers on the days following the senseless slaughter, as the shooter’s devastated parents are left to pick up the pieces. Though both pictures share similar themes, the latter takes a more familiar and less unsettling approach to the material.
It’s clear that Ku is aiming for the sort of raw observation and wrenching drama typified by Todd Field’s 2001 masterpiece, “In the Bedroom,” but it ultimately falls short of its aspirations. There’s an obvious formula to the dramatic arcs of each character that leaves little room for ambiguity. It might’ve been a standard weepie destined for Lifetime if it weren’t for the superb central performances by Maria Bello and Michael Sheen.

In “Beautiful Boy,” Bill and Kate (Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) are a married couple already on the verge of separation when their college-age son, Sam (Kyle Gallner), goes on a shooting rampage at his school and then takes his own life. In the pained weeks that follow, as they avoid an inquisitive media by first staying with family and then holing up in a dingy hotel room, the pair finds that the tragedy both brings them together a bit while also exposing a variety of old wounds and grudges. The rawness and unprecious nature of the lead performances help neophyte director Shawn Ku’s film achieve a certain hold, enough so...

The indie darling "Beautiful Boy" is finally making its way to mass distribution. After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010 and receiving a limited theatrical run earlier this summer, the Michael Sheen and Maria Bello-starring drama is coming out on DVD on October 11.
For those uninitiated, "Beautiful Boy" starts off following a couple whose marriage has taken a turn for the worse and is on the verge of divorce. The drama escalates when they discover that their 18-year-old son, a college freshman named Sam, went on a shooting spree at his school and then turned the gun on himself.
The couple, Bill and Kate (Sheen and Bello), suddenly find themselves the centers of the media's attention, becoming only "gunman's father and mother." Against that traumatic experience, they turn to each other and to their family (Alan Tudyk and Moon Bloodgood) to help cope with the tragedy and find understanding in it all.

Chicago – The family unit, now in a constant battle with technology, changing morality and a fracturing social structure, comes under psychological siege in the mortally sad but ultimately compelling “Beautiful Boy,” featuring Maria Bello and Michael Sheen.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film displays an ultimate tragedy. A couple who is in the process of splitting up must now deal with a son who commits a heinous crime and then kills himself. Bello and Sheen scratch and claw each other like feral cats in their post traumatic circumstance, and work towards solving the difficult equation of directing their human spirit as a divining rod for survival.
Kate (Bello) and Bill (Sheen) are in a dissolving relationship situation, made more fractious with their son Sammy (Kyle Gallner) away at college. The strain in their souls are on display when they share a call from Sammy. He is distantly relating his day at school, while...

"With his Bud Cort haircut and morbid sensibility, Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is too smart for Swansea, Wales, an industrial city mired in some seriously mid-80s Thatcherite doldrums," begins Vadim Rizov at GreenCine Daily. "The trouble with Oliver is that he knows he's clever, which could justify anything: surreptitiously monitoring his parents' sex life, taunting an overweight girl to make local cutie Jordana (Yasmin Paige) notice him as a real livewire, or trying to trash the house of downhill neighbor Graham Purvis (Paddy Considine) who may be having an affair with mom (Sally Hawkins). Fortunately, Submarine, Richard Ayoade's feature debut, is aware of Oliver's self-justifying nature and the ways it could warp him…. Acutely aware of the long tradition of films about disaffected young men coming to terms with themselves, Ayoade doesn't duck the precedent: instead, like Oliver…, he nods to seemingly every single precursor. There's a 400 Blows-quoting dash across the beach,...

Beautiful Boy, the feature film debut of co-writer/director Shawn Ku, takes an incendiary turn on the standard grieving parent narrative by centering the drama on parents who not only lose their child to a Columbine-like massacre but also learn their son was the madman behind the slaughter. In concept, this shocking narrative sounds like a Lifetime Channel melodrama, and sadly even with earnest efforts from stalwart performers Michael Sheen and Maria Bello, Beautiful Boy never manages to rise above that low bar.
At the start, long-married couple, Bill (Sheen) and Kate (Bello), are living solitary lives. With their only child Sammy (Kyle Gallner) in college, the two are finally beginning the business of breaking up. Already in separate rooms, Bill has begun bachelor pad hunting and Kate is planning a family vacation so she can break the news to their son. For his part, Sammy seems a sullen teen,...
