Laura Benanti has exited Amazon’s “Cruel Intentions” adaptation due to a scheduling conflict, a representative for Benanti confirmed to TheWrap.
Benanti, who was slated to recur in a guest star role as Caroline’s mother, Claudia, is unable to move forward in production due a “scheduling conflict,” and told Variety, who first reported the news, that she is hopeful the adaptation’s team will find a “wonderful actress to play this role.”
Recently appearing in “Life & Beth,” Benanti stars in the upcoming Jennifer Lawrence film “No Hard Feelings,” and the Tony-winner is currently starring in an off-Broadway production of A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” alongside Matthew Broderick.
The news comes days after reports that the adaptation of the 1999 cult film, which had been in development at Amazon Freevee since 2021, had set its main cast, which was to include Sarah Catherine Hook as Caroline Merteuil, Claudia’s daughter.

Starz has canceled “Dangerous Liaisons” after one season — despite that the historical drama was renewed just last month, Variety has confirmed.
Though executives at Starz had much faith behind the series, sources say the team decided to axe the show due to it not finding its audience. The remaining three episodes in the first season will be released as scheduled.
“Dangerous Liaisons” was given a Season 2 order in November, prior to its Nov. 6 premiere.
Alice Elgert and Nicholas Denton star in the show as the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont. Based on the famous 18th century novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the Starz series served as a prequel to the historic tale showing the origin story of the notorious couple.

Dangerous Liaisons continues to titillate, tease, and torment.
There seems to be no end to Camille and Valmont's mind games, but they still can't help but flirt.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive clip from Sunday's upcoming episode, which sees the former lovers meeting in a most unlikely place.
Dangerous Liaisons has made such a splash that it has already been picked up for a second season.
It's a prequel series to the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos and play by Christopher Hampton (which was made into a film by Stephen Frears).
Camille (Alice Englert) last saw Valmont (Nicholas Denton) attempting to seduce a wealthy older woman at the opera.
Here she makes an offer -- and demands.
At Madame Berthe's dress shop, Camille has never looked more regal in a magnificent pink gown.
In fact, Pascal doesn't even recognize her.

Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton are two rising Australian stars who play the leads in Starz's new Dangerous Liaisons prequel series.
Set in France in the late 18th century on the eve of the Revolution, Dangerous Liaisons takes us back to the youth of the iconic characters from the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, made famous by Christopher Hampton's play and Stephen Frears's subsequent 1988 film.
This version of Dangerous Liaisons introduces us to Camille and Pascal, young lovers trying to break into the lush, decadent world of the aristocracy by any means necessary.
Alice Englert was recently seen as Nurse Dolly in Netflix's Ratched. Englert plays Camille, the woman at the center of it all.
Nicholas Denton has acted in countless theatre productions, as well as television and film, where he also writes and produces. Denton plays the driven, determined rake, Pascal.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is opening up about the Cruel Intentions reboot NBC passed on and why she’s grateful the pilot was not picked up to series.
The peacock network gave it a pilot order in February 2016 but announced in October of that same year that it was not moving forward with the show. Gellar had signed on to reprise her role of Kathryn Merteuil but ultimately felt the new take didn’t live up to the 1999 film.
“That was a whole crazy time,” she told the New York Times. “Nothing against NBC, but Cruel Intentions is straight streaming. On the first day, I was like, ‘This isn’t working.’ It’s just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it’s not my Cruel Intentions. So, I was actually grateful.”

It’s #BookLoversDay! So for all you book worms out there, we explored movies that had better titles than the books they were based on. Based on William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” the adaptation starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger brought things to the present day and gave it a more timely title, “10 Things I Hate About You.” This very loose adaptation of Greek poet Homer’s “The Odyssey” from the Coen brothers changed many details to fit their trademark style, including the title to “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Choderlos de Laclos’ “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” got a...

Mubi's retrospective, Catherine Breillat, Auteur of Porn?, is showing April 4 - June 3, 2017 in Germany.Sex Is ComedyThroughout her career, Catherine Breillat has provided viewers with a long-form meta-cinema experience. While metacinema is as old as the medium itself, since her debut feature A Real Young Girl in 1976, Breillat has developed a distinct form of it: one that collapses ‘autobiographical’ material, various artistic sensibilities, and the process of filmmaking itself.Like dozens of other English words—such as ‘aesthetic’ or ‘abject’—the word ‘meta’ has been largely misused or misapplied with regard to the film and literary criticism. Regarding the consumption of fiction, the appropriate use of the term 'metafiction,' 'metafilm,' et cetera, has its basis in the Greek meta, which does not translate directly into English but can be understood as a preposition similar to the English word ‘about’ (‘having to do with,’ or ‘on the subject of’). Metafiction is therefore,...

The end of the year is typically a time for reflection on the wins and losses of the previous 12 months, but as news breaks of the shelving of the planned Cruel Intentions TV pilot, it is not entirely clear which category that project would have fallen into. It seems that the show never made it beyond the ‘in contention’ stage, and instead fell through the cracks in the shuffle of cast options and attempts to find an appropriate home for it in the schedule. We now know that NBC officially passed on it in October, and that Sony TV has been trying to find a new home for it ever since.

Realistically speaking, that news was probably followed immediately by the clarification, "No, not Buffy and no, not Kendall Hart, but one of the others ones," but it's still reason to be excited.
Cruel Intentions stood out from the rest during the late '90s teen movie boom. It was nasty, it was sexy and it was fun – and as manipulative bad girl Kathryn Mertuil, it let Gellar flex some acting muscles she didn't get to use on Buffy.

As an object, a letter is a lesson in immortality; it exists in a form of forgotten meanings that only change when the recipient allows them space to breathe. Its language is pure and uncorrupted by the corporeal, a beautiful (or horrible) surprise that will move to express what cannot be spoken; a link to our unconscious thoughts and desires. Once sent on its way to a potential explosion that may never arrive it seems to beckon a residual calm that allows cathartic contemplation and a sense of serene somnambulism that is broke only when the answer arrives. Epistolary novels reached their apogee in the 18th century with Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werthers.

Arrested Development: Glanz’s Debut an Affluent Vacuum
For the most part, it’s an ingenious trick to fabricate an aura of empathy around a pool of pretentious piranhas endlessly floundering about in the upper echelons of privilege and oblivion. To extend an invitation to witness purported romance amongst elitists garnished with nothing more than an immeasurable trust fund and the preened hue of an Ivy League education would seem nearly impossible to enjoy, and, thus, Peter Glanz’s directorial debut, The Longest Weekend is a generous case in point.
Despite a nicely chosen cast and a handful of flourishes borrowed from the works of cinematic masters, there’s little carbonation to this stale elixir that too often depends on cliché. Overreaching and stifled by its own unnegotiable parameters, this is a highly artificial portrait of all that it attempts to convey.

On the face of it an elegant period drama, Stephen Frears' masterclass in malevolence unfolds as a shocking tale of seduction, betrayal and revenge. Based on Choderlos de Laclos' 18th century book of letters between decadent French aristocrats, Glenn Close and John Malkovich play a pair of deceitful bluebloods who hatch an elaborately spiteful plot to ruin their innocent victims, including a young music teacher (Keanu Reeves), an impressionable ingenue (Uma Thurman) and the virtuous Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer). Its haul of three Oscars included best adapted screenplay for Christopher Hampton.

Dangerous Liaisons is to be adapted for a new TV series.
Choderlos de Laclos's classic 18th-century novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses will be written as a drama serial by Christopher Hampton, according to Deadline.
Hampton previously adapted the book as a stage play, earning him a Tony Award nomination.
He later turned his play into an Oscar-winning 1988 movie starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich.
Hampton has joined up with producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender for a drama series for the BBC. The project is later expected to be sold to Us networks.
The screenwriter will reportedly not use elements from his previous adaptations, and will also incorporate characters from other novels from the 18th-century French libertine literary movement the original novel was part of.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses centred around the twisted games played by ex-lovers and rivals Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, who use sex in order to humiliate others.

Playwright and filmmaker Christopher Hampton first adapted Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 French novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" for the stage in 1985, with Lindsay Duncan, Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson among the cast members. The production eventually made it to Broadway two years later. Hampton then helped bring the play to the big screen in a 1988 film directed by Stephen Frears, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, as well as Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman, both relative unknowns at the time. So Hampton knows this story of aristocratic intrigues, seduction and cruelty well, which may be why he's heading up an adaptation of the material for television. Deadline reports that BBC has a drama series based on the novel in development, written by Hampton and produced by Tony Krantz and Colin Callender. The project will be taken out to U.S. networks -- as was the current co-production on which Callender and Krantz worked,...

The BBC is developing a new drama series take on "Dangerous Liaisons".
Christopher Hampton adapted Choderlos de Laclos' classic 18th century novel into a Tony-nominated play which he then turned into the Oscar winning 1988 film starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Now, Hampton is back for this small screen take which he'll pen and will produce along with Tony Krantz and Colin Callender. This version, however, will be quite different as Hampton won't incorporate anything from his previous stage or movie adaptations.
Instead, he's going back to the original "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" novel and will utilise both it and other novels from the same 18th century French libertine literary movement which came to an end with the French Revolution.
The original tale followed two French aristocratic ex-lovers and bitter rivals who use sex as a weapon to humiliate others for their own enjoyment. Once Hampton finishes the script,...

Exclusive: Choderlos de Laclos’ classic 18th Century novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses is headed to the small screen as a drama series project penned by the screenwriter who knows it best — Christopher Hampton. Hampton first adapted the book as a play, which earned him a Tony nomination, and then turned his play into an Oscar-winning script for the 1988 movie Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. Now Hampton has teamed with producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender for a drama series adaptation, which is in development at the BBC. Once Hampton finishes the script, the project is expected to be taken out to U.S. networks. For the series, Hampton will be going back to the original literary source and won’t incorporate any elements of his stage or movie adaptations. Christopher Hampton has done well working from Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th century novel Les Liasisons Dangereuses. He scored a Tony nomination when he adapted it into a play, and his script for Stephen Frears’ 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons won him an Oscar. So he can be forgiven for going back to his favourite source material, this time pitching a drama series now being developed by the BBC with the intent of finding a Us network to co-produce it.As opposed to revisiting the situations used in either the play or the film, the show will head straight back to the literary material and dig up new elements. They will then be combined with characters and plots from other novels in the libertine literary movement, the genre chronicling the aristocracy that was brought to a brutal end with the French revolution.Producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender are aboard to work on the show,...

The classic French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, has had its fair share of adaptations (from the Glenn Close/John Malkovich film Dangerous Liaisons to the contemporary teen re-imagining Cruel Intentions); and now it gets a Chinese one. In this Dangerous Liaisons, 1930s Shanghai is the stand-in for 18th century France, a perfectly extravagant setting for this game of sex and love.
Notorious playboy Xie Yifan (Jang Dong-kun) and banking mogul Mo Jieyu (Cecilia Cheung) are wealthy members of Shanghai society who have an intense, ongoing flirtation. Despite said flirtation, both concern themselves with bedding whichever men or women they taking a liking to. Xie has recently set his sights on his distant cousin Du Fenyu (Ziyi Zhang), who is the model of innocence and grace. Mo, believing this conquest to be nearly impossible, bets that Xie won’t succeed. He quickly rises to the bait,...

Same Old Song: Jin-Ho Adapts Latest Version of Overproduced Classic
It seems there are some tales we can just never get enough of. While mainstream cinema endlessly remakes itself, super hero franchises rebooted, often more than once in the same decade, the art house crowd has its predilection for familiarity as well. If it’s not another adaptation of Shakespeare’s something or other, there’s a plethora of other canonical texts that cross multicultural barriers, and one of those happens to be Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th century novel, Dangerous Liaisons, which has just been remade as a co-production between China and Singapore, helmed by Hur Jin-Ho, the award winning Chinese-South Korean director of Christmas In August (1998). Several definitive versions from several countries already exist, and here we have this lurid tale of mind games and sexual manipulation transported to 1931 Shanghai. While this is certainly one lavishly mounted production,...

Almost 25 years after he played the Vicomte de Valmont in Stephen Frears's film, Malkovich directs a French-language version of Christopher Hampton's play in Paris
In 1988, John Malkovich donned a periwig to play the predatory Vicomte de Valmont in Stephen Frears's film Dangerous Liaisons. Almost 25 years later, the actor has stepped into the director's shoes with a French language version of the original play in Paris.
Malkovich's production of Christopher Hampton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses – itself an adaptation of a novel by Choderlos de Laclos – retains traces of period costume, but gives the play several modern twists, with the characters' letter-writing replaced by texts and tweets. "We're doing a kind of mix between the 18th century and now," Malkovich told Agence France-Presse.
Rehearsals began in November, before the production opened at the Théàtre de l'Atelier in the Latin Quarter of the French capital in January, where it is booking until 30 June.
