Even Halle Berry had to be a little surprised that her generic-looking genre film The Call bested a comedy starring Steve Carell And Jim Carrey at the box office over the weekend. If that wasn.t enough to get Carell down in the dumps regarding his movie career.s future, this news might be another swift kick to the old ego. In a Hollywood.com profile about the men behind Carell.s production company, Carousel Productions, it is reported that the comedian.s slate is a mixed bag of surefire hits, Oscar hopefuls and dead projects . like Of All the Things. A feature version of a musical documentary centered around songwriter and producer Dennis Lambert . who worked with the Four Tops and Dusty Springfield . has been unplugged after years of development. .You hit a bump in the road, and it doesn't line up with the direction you wanted to continue...

New York — "People Like Us" is that increasingly rare kind of film: an adult drama. The filmmakers seem so nervous about this prospect that they fill the movie with action-film editing and a camera that moves so restlessly through domestic life that you'd think it lost its keys.
At one point, I was sure the dramatic opening of a door was going to reveal a Klingon, not complicated memories of a deceased parent.
That's not a coincidence: "People Like Us" is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the script with Roberto Orci (along with Jody Lambert). Kurtzman and Orci are the same duo that wrote the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot, as well as the blockbusters "Mission: Impossible III" and "Transformers," and the TV series "Alias" and "Fringe."
If, in their knack for suspense, they imbue "People Like Us" with impatience, they also keep it entertaining, rendering a familiar, heart-rending melodrama as...

In case you haven’t heard, Steve Carell will be exiting NBC’s “The Office” sometime in April, weeks before the finale of season seven and ushered out of television with a guest starring role from his personal friend, Will Ferrell.
His timely exit signals the end of a six-year agreement with NBC, made in 2005 at a time when his career was burgeoning beyond supporting spots in Ferrell comedies and a brilliant six-year stint as a regular correspondent on “The Daily Show.” Success came quickly, with his first starring role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, a SAG ensemble award for his dramatic turn in Little Miss Sunshine, a flop (Evan Almighty), a hit (Get Smart), and a few delightful, animated leads in Horton Hears a Who! and Despicable Me.
But with “The Office” off his plate for good, Carell’s schedule is widening to take on several more projects a year...

Of all the things you might expect from Steve Carell, singer isn't one of them. However, the comedic actor is indeed warming up his vocal cords to sing in his next movie. Carell and his Carousel Pictures production company are adapting the 2008 documentary Of All the Things into a feature film. The doc is about the life of singer-songwriter Dennis Lambert who put out the album "Bags and Things" in 1972. The album flopped in the U.S. but Lambert went on to be successful as a songwriter and producer for other artists including "Rhinestone Cowboy" for Glen Campbell, "We Built This City," for Starship, "Nightshift" for The Commodores, etc., into the early '80s. Eventually, Lambert retired from music, moved to Florida and became a Realtor. However, Lambert comes to find out that "Bags and Things," 35 years after it was released, is a massive hit in the Phillipines and so,...

Steve Carell is something of a rock star in his career, having transformed himself from a quirky commentator on "The Daily Show" to both a mainstream and indie success with films like "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" and "Little Miss Sunshine." It makes sense, then, that Carell plans to elevate his rock star status in a literal sense with a biopic of Dennis Lambert, the songwriter/producer who became a rock sensation in the Philippines late in his life. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley wrote the untitled script based on "Of All The Things," a 2008 documentary directed by Lambert's son Jody.
"Dennis left the music business [after his solo album flopped] and was selling real estate in Florida when he was told by a Filipino promoter that he's still huge there because his album had been so successful. The promoter begged him to tour," Daley told Deadline of Lambert's true story. "Finally, in his 60s...

Though he put on a little musical performance in the 2007 film Dan in Real Life, actor Steve Carell may be stretching his vocal talents a little further. Variety reports Carell has signed on to star in and produce a feature film adaptation of the 2008 film Of All the Things, a music documentary which followed songwriter-producer Dennis Lambert, the man behind such hits as Baby Come Back and We Built This City. The Warner Bros. film will take cues from the documentary which saw him step away from his career selling real estate in Florida to embark on a two-week concert tour in the Philippines. Find out why below. Apparently Lambert's solo album became insanely popular in the Philippines 35 years after it was released and the rest is now on celluloid thanks to his son Jody who directed the original documentary. First linked to the role back in May, Steve Carell is now officially set to star in and produce the narrative feature remake of 2008 music documentary "Of All the Things" at Warner Bros. Pictures reports Variety.
The original documentary centred on songwriter-producer Dennis Lambert, one of the top songwriters of pop music from the late 60's to the mid 80's, working with such famous bands as The Four Tops and The Commodores.
In 1972 his attempt to become a recording artist flopped as his debut album "Bags and Things" was virtually ignored upon release. Yet there was a twist - a single from the album, "Of All the Things", became a massive hit in the Philippines and is still played at Filipino weddings to this day.
Lambert was always asked to perform there but he declined until 2007 where he played five dates and managed to sell out a Valentine's Day concert at Araneta Coliseum.

He’s played clueless bosses, idiot weathermen, and 40-year-old virgins. Now Steve Carell is about to add singer-songwriter to his onscreen menagerie of characters. According to Variety, The Office star has signed on to produce and star in Warner Bros.’ feature film adaptation of the 2008 music documentary Of All the Things — the unusual and unlikely story of Dennis Lambert. In the ’70s and ’80s, Lambert achieved a sort of semi-fame in music circles as the man behind such FM radio staples as “Baby Come Back”, “Rhinestone Cowboy”, and “Ain’t No Woman Like the One I Got”. After his moment in the sun was over,...

One of the more unusual projects in the long list of potential films for Steve Carell is a dramatic feature based on the documentary Of All the Things, which chronicles an unlikely tour of the Philippines undertaken by songwriter Dennis Lambert. We heard about this project in May when Warner Bros. started negotiating a deal for the remake rights to the doc, and I expected that it would fall out of sight and never be heard from again. But now the film is taking a step forward as writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have been hired to write the picture. Quick backstory recap from our last story on this film, since Of All the Things never got wide distribution, so hasn't been seen by many audiences outside a few festivals. Dennis Lambert is the subject of the 2008 doc Of All the Things, which told his backstory as a...

The writing team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley just closed a deal at Warner Bros to script a feature vehicle for Steve Carell based on the 2008 documentary Of All The Things. That film told the story of how songwriter/producer Dennis Lambert achieved rock star status late in life when he went on a singing tour of the Philippines, and discovered he was to Filipinos what Jerry Lewis is to the French. Carell's Warner Bros-based Carousel is producing with Bryan and Sean Furst. The studio acquired the remake rights, while Submarine is repping the docu's distribution rights. It's the second project the writers are doing for Carell, who's crafting film vehicles he'll do after completing his run on The Office. They also wrote Burt Wonderstone, a New Line comedy that has Carell wanting to play a Vegas magician who accidentally kills his performing partner and tries to rebound...

Briefly: That's not a typo in the title. Raised by Wolfs is a comedy pitch that DreamWorks picked up, and Steve Carell is now attached to star in and produce the film that Les Firestein concocted. That's about all the detail we've got right now, though THR says that the spelling of the title is related to the name of the character Carell is slated to play. This is just the latest project setup for Carell, who has several other comedies (Missing Links, Mail-Order Groom and Hi-t) in development at Warner Bros. as well as Crazy, Stupid Love, which has been casting. He's also been linked in some fashion to a biography of songwriter Dennis Lambert.

Dennis Lambert might not seem like the most obvious music industry figure to get his own biopic. He was a minor-league songwriter, penning hits like "We Built This City" and "Baby Come Back," and his one attempt at becoming a performer himself sank so badly in the States that he eventually became a Florida real estate agent. But Lambert's story has one weird, delightful wrinkle-- his single "Of All Things" became a gigantic hit in the Phillippines, enough that at 60 years old he was able to stage a national tour there and meet a country's worth of fans he didn't know he had. The story was told in the documentary Of All the Things, which hit the festival circuit in 2008, but Warner Bros. has even bigger plans. Vulture reports that the studio is planning to buy the feature rights to the film as a star vehicle for Steve Carell. The...

I just finished writing a news story about an SNL cast member getting cast in movies all over the place. In conjunction, comedians from The Daily Show have done pretty well for themselves too. But the most famous of all Daily Show correspondents has got to be Steve Carell.

Warner Brothers is currently seeking the rights to the unreleased documentary Of All the Things. This article requires a bit of backstory. Dennis Lambert is the subject of a 2008 documentary Of All the Things, which told his backstory as a songwriter ('Rhinestone Cowboy,' Nightshift,' 'We Built This City') and singer whose one album, awkwardly titled Bags and Things, bombed in the Us but became massively popular in the Philippines. At the age of 60, long after Lambert had retired from the music business and become a Florida real estate broker, he was convinced to do a five-date tour of the Philippines, where he was received with at least occasional rapture. Jody Lambert, the singer's son, filmed the tour, which became the documentary. Now Warner Bros. is negotiating a deal for the remake rights to Of All the Things, and wants Steve Carell to play the singer. This could be a great role for Carell, as Lambert's story has a lot of heart and humor.

Standing in front of a packed crowd at the IFC Center last night before the SXSW-presented New York City premiere of his doc Of All The Things, Jody Lambert contemplated his good fortune. "To have Janet Pierson introduce the movie, to be part of Stranger Than Fiction, to have John Pierson send you an email...it's kind of like Bonertown, USA." To say that there were boners all around might be an exaggeration, but Lambert's goofy, feel-good film definitely pleased the crowd. Jody's father Dennis Lambert is the songwriter and/or producer of dozens of mainstream pop-rock hits, from "Baby Come Back" (after the screening, Lambert noted that its use in Swiffer commercials has been "very lucrative") to "Ain't No Woman" to (my personal favorite) "Do The Freddie." After spending twenty-plus years writing hits for o ...
