With roots in real-life murders, “The Hook” urban legend goes hand-in-hand — or should I say hand-in-hook? — with the slasher genre. After being referenced in ’80s slashers He Knows You’re Alone and Final Exam, it went on to at least partially inspire five slashers from the ’90s: Candyman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Campfire Tales, and Lovers Lane. Unfortunately, the latter is the least effective of the bunch.
To be fair, Lovers Lane was made independently for $500,000 — a fraction of the budget of the studio films — before being released direct to video in 1999. Directed by Jon Steven Ward and written by Geof Miller (DeepStar Six) and Rory Veal, the film is best remembered for being the film debut of Anna Faris, one year prior to her starring turn in Scary Movie. It was on this set that she met co-star Ben Indra, to whom she was...

Zachary Levi isn’t giving up on the movie followup to his NBC series Chuck, and he says creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak are on board.
Levi starred in the spy dramedy from 2007 to 2012 as Chuck Bartowski, an average guy who was dragged into the world of the the CIA and Nsa to take on dangerous criminals and other threats. He’s been campaigning for an expansion of the Chuck universe since the show ended, but he recently said on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show that it might actually be coming to fruition.
“I’ve been trying to make a Chuck movie since before we even finished the show. I saw the writing on the wall, I saw a lot of the streaming stuff starting to pop up. I saw a lot of like, well, people are doing, you know, like, you know, Zach Braff, I think was crowdfunding.

If Hollywood is good at anything it’s seeing what hits big at the box office and then churning out a hundred clones of that product until it gets driven into the ground. We see it all the time. One such incident came around the release of the 1978 film Halloween. Once it began to rack up box office numbers everyone scrambled to put out their own slasher film, preferably built around a holiday. This led to a glut of slasher films, which if you’re a slasher fan like myself was a fantastic time to be alive. Let’s look at the best Halloween rip-offs.
Offerings (1989)
This might be the most egregious rip-off Halloween there could be. A young kid accidentally falls down a well while playing with a group of kids. Some of them scare him as he’s walking along the edge, and he hits his head.

16 year old Josie (Olivia DeJonge) and her older brother Jack (Alex Neustaedter) lost their mother when they were young, and have since been raised, entirely isolated and homeschooled, by their abusive, alcoholic father (William Fichtner). One day Jack runs away, but a few weeks later he returns for his sister.
Josie and Jack bears all the hallmarks of a debut. Kelly Braffet and Sarah Lancaster’s screenplay, taken from Braffet’s novel, is a blunt instrument. One of the biggest issues is that we don’t see much evolution in any of the characters, and what we do get is screenwriting 101. Josie and Jack’s father is a drunk, over and over again we see him completely soused, berating his kids and telling them how useless they are. William Fichtner isn’t bad, making the slightly less obvious choice to generally play these scenes quietly, but they all blend into each other.

Zachary Levi, who starred as the titular protagonist of Chuck from 2007 to 2012, is still campaigning for a sequel movie and appealing to series co-producer Chris Fedak to write a script.
While NBC’s hit show suffered from low ratings during its run, Chuck has always taken advantage of a dedicated fanbase and over the many years of its absence, a cult following has formed around the adventures of the nerdy computer expert named Charles Bartowski, who has all the secrets of the world encoded inside his brain, and his sidekicks Agent Sarah Walker and Colonel John Casey.
Even though the cast of Chuck seem to be doing alright for themselves, they’re still very passionate about their former family and have expressed interest in a reunion as a sequel movie or better yet, a sixth season. As a lifelong Monster Kid, the only thing better than a good horror movie is a good horror movie that’s set on Halloween. Despite the fact that the entire month of October is devoted to horror, there are surprisingly few movies actually set on our favorite holiday—and even fewer when talking about the really good ones.
The Terror of Hallow’s Eve, the new movie from accomplished makeup effects artist and director Todd Tucker, is a celebration of Halloween, of monsters, of everything we horror fans love about the season. It begins as an autobiographical story about Tim (Caleb Thomas), a 15-year-old kid obsessed with monsters, who gets bullied by some douchebag classmates on Halloween. When left alone to pass out candy by his doting single mom (Sarah Lancaster), a nurse who has to work the night shift, Tim conjures up the spirit of The Trickster (Doug Jones...

One of my most-anticipated from of this years Frightfest offerings is Todd Tucker’s The Terror of Hallow’s Eve which stars Caleb Thomas, Jt Neal, Annie Read, Juliet Landau, Eric Roberts, Doug Jones, Christian Kane, and Sarah Lancaster. Why, you may ask, is a generically titled film, about a wish-granting demon is so high on my must-see list for this years festival? Because Todd Tucker is the man behind one of this decades Best kids movies… Monster Mutt – which is an old-school family film in the most traditional sense: there’s no swearing, no violence and no sex, it really is the epitome of a family movie. Oh and did I mention that it features practical effects thanks to Tucker’s “other” job in SFX?
Given the fact I adored Monster Mutt I have high hopes for The Terror of Hallow’s Eve. Check out the poster and trailer below!

"One dog can change everything." Purdie Distribution has revealed a trailer for a new dog movie called The Stray, about a stray dog named Pluto who changes the lives of one family. The full cast of mostly unknowns includes Sarah Lancaster, Michael Cassidy, Scott Christopher, Connor Corum, Jacque Gray, Cory Dangerfield and Coral Chambers. I'm a big, big time dog lover, and I'm always on the lookout for films about dogs, but this doesn't look that good. Oddly, the dog barely shows up in the trailer that much. It's all about the people. This looks about as cheesy and mediocre as A Dog's Purpose, the other dog movie this year. At least the doggie looks cute, with his charming different colored eyes. That's about all I can say. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Mitch Davis' The Stray, direct from YouTube: The Stray tells the true story of how a stray dog,...

You gotta have faith.
Okay, that's a motto that was more applicable to the George Michael loving Eli Stone, but Code Black Season 2 Episode 9 was trying really hard to work that message in. Really hard.
I'm not really sure why Noa needed faith to suck it up and reach out to her patient's widow, but whatever gets the job done, right? Although honestly, I'm also not sure she should have felt as much guilt as she did. Maybe I just have the romantic range of a teaspoon, but unless they'd had a fight, "Tell my wife I love her" isn't earth shattering or unexpected.
No, if Noa was going to feel guilty about anything it should have been about not going back out and completing her ride along. And even that's a stretch. Recognizing your limits is as important a skill as anything else in medicine.

Touching down at the Toronto International Film Festival next week for its world premiere is Warner Bros.’ The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. While anticipation is certainly high, I can’t say yet that I’m particularly excited for this one. The trailer didn’t do much for me and despite the terrific actors in the lead roles, I’m not feeling too eager to go run out and see it.
That being said, I’m not discounting The Judge just yet. I’ll definitely catch it at some point while it’s playing at the festival and I’m curious to hear how audiences and critics react to it once it’s screened. After all, Downey Jr. is amongst the hottest actors in Hollywood right now and it seems like he simply cannot give a poor performance at this point. For his involvement alone, I think...
