Exclusive: Netflix has acquired a potential franchise property in The Hunt For Atlantis, an adaptation of the Andy McDermott bestseller. The project has been in the works for a bit with Aaron Berg writing and producing. At Netflix, he will be joined as producer by 6th & Idaho’s Matt Reeves & Adam Kassan.
Book is the first in what is called the Wilde/Chase series that numbers 15 books. Years after the disappearance of her parents, brilliant NYU grad student Nina Wilde teams with cavalier ex-Sas British bodyguard Eddie Chase when a tech-billionaire sends them on a globe-trotting race to discover the legendary lost city. Exclusive: Divine Rights Media’s Mike Landry has partnered with Derek S. Jancisin to option the rights to Andy McDermott’s bestselling Wilde/Chase book series. The hope is to hatch a franchise, beginning with the first book in the series, The Hunt for Atlantis. Aaron Berg has been set to write and produce along with Landry, with Jancisin exec producing. The latter intends to finance development and is a managing director and Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch in Pittsburgh. This marks his first foray into film production.

Dean Devlin’s fledgling Us distribution operation has taken all North American rights for The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea starring Jason Sudeikis, Jessica Biel and Maisie Williams. Content Media represents international rights in Cannes.
The film premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival last month and is set for a theatrical release later this year. The story centres on a grieving father who rediscovers his faith in life when he helps a young girl on a quest.
Electric Entertainment’s head of domestic distribution Zac Reeder brokered the deal with vice-president of development Ben Kim and Wme Global on behalf of the film-makers.
The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea will mark the second film to go out via Electric’s domestic distribution arm after Blackway, which will debut day-and-date theatrically and on VOD on June 10.

Exclusive: Kristen Bell will star in The Lifeguard, the film written and to be directed by Liz W. Garcia. Bell, who stars in Showtime’s House Of Lies, will star with Mamie Gummer, Martin Starr, Alex Shaffer, Joshua Harto and Amy Madigan. The film, which was packaged by CAA (the agency is selling domestic rights), will shoot in Pittsburgh this month. Bell will play Leigh, a reporter on the verge of 30 who abandons her life in New York City, returns home to get her high school job as a lifeguard, and starts a dangerous relationship with a 16-year-old delinquent. The film is being produced by Mike Landry and Carlos Velazquez of C Plus Pictures, along with Harto and Garcia of La Pistola, Inc. The co-production is in association with Attic Light Films, Wild Invention and Houndstooth. Bell will next be seen in Hit And Run. Garcia and Harto created Memphis Beat for TNT.

Black Note Films and C Plus Pictures' "Frost" has been retitled "The Last International Playboy." The indie, starring Jason Behr and Krysten Ritter, will open June 12 in New York.
Director Steve Clark, who also penned the original screenplay with co-writer Thomas Moffett, makes his feature directorial debut with the film.
The "Playboy" cast also includes Monet Mazur, Lucy Gordon, India Ennenga, Mike Landry and Lydia Hearst. The film also boasts a lineup of international models including Jessica Gomes, Shannan Click, Lisa Cant, Nicole Trunfio, Leticia Cline and Amy Finlayson.

The Slamdance competition is open only to under-$1 million budgeted films from first-time filmmakers and runs at the same time as Sundance (in Utah) to show a more truer "independent" film style. This year they've got some great looking films, including a sweet looking vampire flick which has the Karate Kid Ralph Macchio himself, Rosencantz and Guildenstern are Undead. I Sell the Dead which was well received at Tad will be opening the fest. Also playing will be The Broken Lizard's latest film The Slammin' Salmon, and Mum and Dad.
