Say what you will about "Avatar: The Way of Water," but surely you'd agree that it looks beautiful. It's also one of the most expensive movies ever made, to the point where James Cameron has claimed it needs to make 2 billion at the box office just to be considered a success. But regardless of what the actual box office results are, it seems like all that money put in was well-spent. The visual effects in this movie are almost absurdly, overwhelmingly impressive from start to finish. Any movie that can pull this off is a movie worth making.
A lot of this is due to the fact that Cameron and his VFX team weren't content to just coast off the innovations of the first "Avatar" movie. They took what worked with the 2009 film and improved on it, even reinventing parts of it. "We want it to be better than what we could do before,...

The King of the World won’t be at the L.A. premiere tonight for Avatar: The Way of Water after testing positive for Covid.
“I am in LA, just back from Tokyo, and I managed to pick up Covid on the plane, so I’m isolated and can’t go to my own premiere tonight,” Cameron told Deadline. “The number of people I’ve told over the years, ‘ah, we’ll catch up and I’ll see you at the premiere…well, I guess not. Man proposes, and God disposes.”
A Disney rep tells Deadline, “James Cameron has Covid, but is feeling fine.”
“He tested positive as part of a routine testing cadence,” continued the statement, “He will continue to complete his schedule virtually but will not be at the premiere.”

The Gifted gives us our first action episode, and it is as X-Men as they come. Spoilers ahead in our review...

1.4 eXit Strategy
There are certain tropes that are nearly universal in every effective X-Men story. The good ones are always full of soapy non-mutant backstories, melodramatic romance subplots, and visually interesting applications of powers. The longer The Gifted goes on, the more confident I am that the folks making it think the same things. This week's episode, eXit strategy, hit all four to great effect.
First and foremost, this was an action episode. The whole plot centred on breaking up a convoy carrying Reed Strucker and Polaris to a Sentinel Services black site to rescue them. We also got a look into Eclipse's background, and his history with a cartel boss's daughter; and follow...

It’s time to load up on chimichangas and hit the weight room, or maybe just hit the weight room. Yesterday, Josh Brolin shared a photo on his Instagram of him spending time in the gym in preparation for his upcoming role as Cable. After a lengthy casting process, the team behind Deadpool 2 decided on Brolin to play the newest addition to Wade Wilson’s crew. Many Hollywood actors were rumored to be up for the part including Pierce Brosnan, and Steven Lang. Ultimately, the role went to Brolin.
He now appears to be bulking up for his turn as Cable, and rightly so, as the character is depicted in the comics as a massive brute. Brolin, who already plays a very prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thanos (with the help of motion capture), is a good fit for the role of Cable, he can be...

Ever since the end credits rolled on Deadpool (and even before the movie opened really), speculation was rife as to who would strapping on the gigantic elbow pads to play time travelling, massive gun spawning Cable, forever the straight man to the merc with a mouth. Everyone from Steven Lang to Pierce Brosnan had their names in the hat at one point, but now it’s official, with The Hollywood Reporter announcing that Josh Brolin will be taking on the role in the highly anticipated sequel. To make it even more official, Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to announce the casting as only he can. The fuck, Fox! You can't play 2 characters in the same universe!! There are moments where a talented director makes a film so bad that you feel like you might need to go back to watch their earlier films just to make sure you weren't wrong when you liked them. "Blackhat" is the worst film Michael Mann has made since "The Keep," and I think given the choice between the two, I would happily watch "The Keep" again first. I am baffled by almost every moment of "Blackhat," and I'm struggling to make sense of where something goes this wrong. I haven't read the spec that Morgan Davis Foehl sold to the studio, but I know that Mann felt strongly that he deserved a co-writing credit on the film, one that the WGAw denied him after an arbitration. I'm not sure who to blame for the truly unfathomable narrative choices throughout, but I have to give Mann the final credit for creating...

James Cameron has announced that, despite having died in the first film, Sigourney Weaver will return for the sequels to Avatar. She will join returning cast members Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Steven Lang, who's character Colonel Miles Quaritch also perished in the first film.
Cameron said:
“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens.” We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

This watery thriller from Insomnia director Erik Skjoldbjærg promises a tale 'based on real-life events' - but don't be expecting even the runway-stretching liberties of Argo, in terms of historical accuracy. Pioneer is a fictitious tale of Norwegian and American deep-sea diving teams collaborating but also competing for the lucrative rights to exploit North Sea oil in the early 1980s, derived fairly abstractly from a number of subsequent real world controversies that were to make the news in the following years.
Descending 500 metres into prototype tin-cans is a family affair for Headhunters' Aksel Hennie and big brother André Eriksen, hampered as they are by arrogant and hyper-competitive American interloper Wes Bentley. When a catastrophic mistake is made in a test-dive, the aftermath of the tragedy haunts Hennie's character, driving him to find out what really went wrong. It's a search which will take him into various nests of corruption at...

Back in October, it was confirmed that Steven Lang will return as Colonel Miles Quaritch in the next three installments of "Avatar." And now comes word directly from James Cameron that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will also return for the three films, which are set to begin shooting later this year. "Jake Sully is rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor," said Cameron. "Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they'll be returning with us to Pandora." The as yet untitled "Avatar" sequels will be filmed back-to-back. The release of the first follow-up will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later.

Dean Geyer may not be a household name in the states just yet -- he's best known in Australia for his role on the soap "Neighbours" -- but his face (and abs!) are about to get a whole lot more recognizable when he joins "Glee," which returns Thursday (Sept. 13) at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Geyer plays Nyada student Brody Weston, a hot upperclassman and possible Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) love interest, and is part of Zap2it's new class of Ones to Watch this fall. We asked him about everything from his most embarrassing iPod track to his first kiss -- and Geyer went for extra credit by answering all 18 of our questions (we only asked for 10 -- such an overachiever, that guy).
Check out his responses below, and catch him this season on "Glee."

A major player has been added to the new Fox dino-drama, Terra Nova, as New Zealander Simone Kessell joins the time-traveling refugees as Alicia Washington.
The pilot had to be reshot, according to the latest from Deadline, with Kessell in the role of Washington, the Terra Nova colony’s second-in-command.
It takes the right type of person to stand out against Steven Lang, who plays compound commander Frank Taylor, but Kessell, with appearances on Fringe, Reaper, Underbelly, and CSI: Miami, is no stranger to the small screen so she should be able to hold her own.
Kessell isn’t the only new member of the Terra Nova team either, with Ashley Zukerman and Emelia Burns also joining the cast.

My first panel of the day was for Steven Spielberg's long awaited sci-fi series Terra Nova, which stars Jason O'Mara and Stephen Lang. The only star among the panel was Lang along with producers Rene Echevarria, Brandon Braga, Kevin Blank and Jose Molina. Unlike many panels, we were treated to the entire first half of the pilot episode. Unfortunately, producer Steven Spielberg was not on hand to talk about the show, but his imprint was evident in the pilot episode.
All I can say is that everything about this show, from the pracitcal sets to the CGI, is Epic. The dinosaurs are amazing, the CGI looks as though a lot of time and money was spent in their creation. The Australian locations look simply beautiful and I can not wait to see more of it. This is going to be one heck of a cool show to watch on a weekly basis.

More photos from “Conan the Barbarian” have been outed by Lionsgate. Take a look at Conan (Jason Momoa), Tamara (Rachel Nicols), Corin (Ron Pearlman), Marique (Rose McGowan), Ukafa (Bob Sapp) and Khalar Zym (Steven Lang) in all their glory.

X-Men 1 & 2 director Bryan Singer should get the kudos for the genius idea of setting X-Men: First Class during the 60′s Cuban Missile Crisis and having now been accepted back into the Fox family with open arms, he has made it well known he wants to once again direct a movie in the saga after he’s done with next summer’s Jack the Giant Killer.
Whether that’ll be a Wolverine story or an X-Men 4 (a sequel to Brett Ratner’s X3: The Last Stand) or X-Men: Second Class is not yet clear and I’m sure Singer doesn’t quite know himself as all the pieces haven’t yet fallen into place. But for now his interest lies in the 60′s timeline and he’s talking up future possibilities and seems excited about where the new characters could go next;

Lionsgate has finally chimed in with a set release date for its reboot Conan, which will hit theaters on August 19th of 2011.
That same date is also shared by Robert Rodriguez’s family friendly sequel Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, as well as the teen-oriented reboot Fright Night.
Time will tell on the rating for the film, but speculation is given the release date the studio will go with an R rating, something that Lionsgate is not afraid of doing these days (i.e. Kick-Ass, Crank, etc.). Judging by some of the Nsfw photos from the film this movie may have some nudity and 300-style violence with it, a good thing for a pulp action film like this.
Sean Hood did a rewrite on the previous draft of the Conan script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, which follows Conan as he avenges the slaughter of his father.

Bleeding Cool received a new batch of photos for Marcus Nispel’s Conan. We are not sure if these are actually from the film, as they look slightly different than most of the stuff we have seen from the movie at this point. Also, no one in the photos is identifiable from the cast list either. That being said, if they are from the movie, you can get a larger sense of the scale this production has. It’s not a bad looking remake at this point, and it seems as though Nispel has the project going in the right direction.
Update - I added two new pictures with Rose McGowan that the site also found and they are not bad, so it seems these are all from the movie.
Thoughts on the Conan reboot so far?

As the cast for "X-Men: First Class" continues to fill out with confirmed additions and rumors aplenty, one particular report stands out among the rest — Kevin Bacon is reportedly in negotiations to play the villain opposite James McAvoy's Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender's Magneto.
Bacon's involvement isn't confirmed yet, but even less certain is the bad guy role that "First Class" is attempting to fill out. No names have been offered in connection with the initial Bacon reports, leading fans to speculate as to who the energetic actor might play in the superhero film.
In this special Secret Identity, we're offering a few of the "X-Men" villains we think Bacon is capable of playing in "First Class."
Cameron Hodge: A cofounder of the original X-Factor squad, Cameron Hodge was secretly the head of anti-mutant organization The Right, attempting to break down human-mutant relations with a powerful inside position.

A couple of new images from Marcus Nispel’s Conan remake have surfaced and they go from awesome to epic in just a short span. A few weeks or so ago we posted a fairly simple image of Jason Momoa in the titular role but nothing compares to these bad boys.

Nu Boyana Film Studios the company behind the new Conan film has posted the first official image from the brand new remake which just wrapped principal photography and doesn’t have a concrete release date set as of now. Momoa is famous for his role as Ronan on the popular sci-fi series, Stargate: Atlantis. You can see some early unofficial looks here.
Momoa stands at 6? 4? so he has the height to fit the part but seeing him as Ronan on Stargate: Atlantis he has a lot similar qualities such as wielding a sword, the hunger to kill people and a real brooding physicality.

I was a very happy camper when Stargate: Atlantis star Jason Momoa got casted in the lead role of Conan in the remake of the classic pulp warrior. Well now we are finally getting a look at the young actor playing the titular role and he couldn’t look any better.
Latino Review had the images that they got by way of Quiet Earth. The style of the movie looks a lot like the earlier film from Nispel called Pathfinder. Momoa looks good though and certainly is different than the look that was enstilled in cinematic legend by Schwartzenegger. What are your thoughts on Momoa in the role? do these set pics get you excited at all? I can’t wait to see what the finished product is like.

The Conan casting announcements keep on coming as Marcus Nispel’s upcoming adventure adds one more. Rose McGowan has apparently signed on for the project as well. Now for those who do not know, McGowan was attached to play Red Sonja (and still is, as far as we know) in Robert Rodriguez’s re-adaptation of the warrior heroine. Red Sonja first appeared in a Conan the Barbarian comic, and was a rewrite of another Robert E. Howard character Red Sonya, thus her casting in the Conan film would make you wonder if they were setting her character up for her solo movie.
It seems that is not the case as McGowan is set to play an evil half-human/half-witch, which is not anything close to Red Sonja.
The actress joins the already casted Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Bob Sapp, Ron Perlman, Said Taghmaoui and Leo Howard in the Nu Image/Millennium Films picture.

We've had some pretty awesome stuff on Conan. Not to tweet the horn that feeds me, but Latino Review brought you the news that Avatar's Steven Lang was on board as the villain Khalar Singh in Marcus Nispel's remake. Hell, we've been at the forefront of almost All the casting on Conan. It's been a long time, if you think about it, since we've seen some medieval story about a ripped dude fighting in the times of castles and...swords. 300 might be the most similar example, but even then, that's Sparta, yo. It looks like Jason Momoa will play the titular lead and his father Won't be Mickey Rourke like we originally thought, but Ron Pearlman...which is also awesome. There's just a lot of awesome in the casting for this movie. The kind of guys even a straight man in his prime (like myself) wouldn't mind seeing greased up and killing things.

"Sin City" actress Brittany Murphy's death at age of 32 yesterday stirred up reactions in the Twitter Report feed. Shock about her age pervaded many posts, but Kevin Smith probably stated his condolences the most eloquently.

Check out those tweets after the jump along with Jon Favreau's visit with "Iron Man 2" actor Mickey Rourke, Edgar Wright's time-travel plot and much more.

Well, it certainly didn’t suck. That’s me, eating a little crow. For months I have snickered about the colossal disaster I was sure Avatar was going to become. Admit it, you thought so too. How on earth could you not be pessimistic after seeing the early trailers?
Alien creatures a hue of blue so intense it would make papa smurf puke, and waxy humans that would beat any of Robert Zemeckis’s early efforts for “most soulless rendition of a human being” did not exactly instill confidence in me. Then came the daunting news that the movie weighed in at almost 3 hours. Add the driving time in and the Avatar screening took up almost half a day. I disliked the movie before I even slipped on the exquisite 3-D nerd-spectacles that I so love.
A funny thing happened when the movie began. I was captivated. I rarely looked at my watch,...

By now, anyone frequenting The Flickcast has seen our reports about Avatar’s tickets already on sale for its December 18th release, our thoughts on its early footage and of course spent hours dissecting every second of the initial trailer. But there hasn’t been much talk with either the cast or crew of the film since Jim Cameron’s appearance at the E3 convention back in June. That is, until now.
Recently, we got the chance to speak briefly with stars of the film Sigourney Weaver and Steven Lang as well as Producer Jon Landau about their experiences working on the film. Rather than asking them what we should expect to see as the trailers and revealed footage have already given us an idea of that, we wanted to know what it was like for these film veterans to work with the new technology Cameron developed specifically for this project.
