The Fire This Time: Sheridan’s Neo-Western Arrives Lifeless, Overbaked
Casting is an important part of the filmmaking process, and sometimes the highest profile celebrity headliner is more a curse than a blessing. Such is the first immediately apparent issue with Those Who Wish Me Dead, the third directorial outing for the multifaceted Taylor Sheridan, an adaptation of the novel by Michael Koryta, scripted by the author and Charles Leavitt before Sheridan inherited the material, starring Angelina Jolie as a Montana smoke jumper.
The conjoining issue is a revisionist narrative cobbling together too many tangents without bothering to deliver any characterization, the resulting tempest devolving into the signature violent face-offs prized by Sheridan but without any emotional investment and, therefore, no real payoff.…...

Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead — adapted from Michael Koryta’s 2014 novel of the same name — starts as three stories before whittling its way down to one. In the first, a smokejumper is haunted by memories of a burn gone wrong, in which she and other firefighters leapt into the wilds of a flame-swept Montana forest only for the wind to behave differently than they expected, and for a trio of young boys, running to be rescued, to succumb before their eyes. It’s the kind of job...

Angelina Jolie is Hannah, a hard drinking and reckless fire fighter in Montana, a ‘smoke jumper’ who parachutes into out-of-control forest fires. After a tragedy occurs on her watch, she is relegated to observation work in a high-rise fire tower. Meanwhile, an accountant with proof of crimes on a mob boss is on the run with his son Connor (Finn Little), being pursued by professional assassins (Aiden Gillen and Nicholas Hoult). The son manages to escape, and Hannah finds him wandering the woods, where it is now her responsibility to protect him.

Reaffirming Angelina Jolie’s interest in efficient action storytelling, co-writer/director Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead, adapted from Michael Koryta’s 2014 novel, is a lean throwback to the type of muscular ’90s and early ’00s films that eschewed world-building and IP in favor of streamlined set-pieces. While the film still telegraphs the brand of gruff masculinity that made Sheridan your dad’s favorite screenwriter/showrunner, this time grafted onto Jolie’s hard-drinking smoke jumper Hannah, Those Who Wish Me Dead works mainly because it moves quickly and effectively. Distilling plot and character down to basic archetypes, Sheridan’s film is less concerned with the weighty thematic issues that sometimes bogged down his previous work, and is more than happy to showcase Jolie ridiculously contending with the compounding issue of simultaneously fighting assassins and a raging wildfire.

Summer blockbuster season slowly gets underway as the “Saw” spinoff and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” enter theaters
The summer box office season is slowly getting underway as Lionsgate’s “Spiral” becomes the first contender to take on the slowly recovering theatrical market this weekend.
With a reported $20 million production budget and Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson starring, the spinoff to the “Saw” horror franchise is the perfect kind of low-risk/high-reward film to brave a theater landscape where approximately 35% of cinemas in North America are still closed. With such a low bar to clear to turn a profit, “Spiral” should be on track to easily finish in the green if it meets independent projections of a $11 million-$13 million opening, though a $8 million-$10 million opening would also put in in a solid position to recoup.
Lionsgate could join “Demon Slayer” distributor Funimation as only the second studio aside from...

Her firefighter struggles to save a young witness from very bad gangsters and a blazing inferno
Every student who’s ever taken a creative writing course has heard the phrases “man versus man” and “man versus nature,” but one imagines filmmaker Taylor Sheridan circling them both in his notebook and jotting, “Yes. This.” in the margin. His work as writer and/or director of films like “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” as well as the TV show “Yellowstone,” often sets his characters against nature, both in the compositional and confrontational sense.
Sheridan’s very much in his wheelhouse in “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” a tale of a firefighter seeking redemption, a sheriff and his wife fighting for survival, and a young witness trying to elude his captors, and all of them coping with a massive forest fire in Big Sky country. The stakes are high and the...

The failure of video game films has been well documented. Although video games have been a major part of pop culture for decades we have yet to see a fully successful crossover hit the big screen. On paper Warcraft seems like the movie that could do it mainly due to the man behind the camera Duncan Jones. With Jones Warcraft has both a talented filmmaker and someone who is well familiar with the source property. This will not be another Super Mario Bros that barely resembles the video game it is depicting. Unfortunately, Warcraft is vapid, dull, and empty – but not completely void of merit. The search for a great video game movie continues.

It was a tough year for director Duncan Jones. He lost his dad, rock icon David Bowie, and saw his passion project, the live-action Warcraft movie open to scathing reviews and an abysmal domestic box office return. However, the film performed admirably overseas and is still going strong in a few territories. Will that be enough for Legendary Pictures and Universal to move ahead with a sequel? If the film's Chinese Twitter account is to be believed, that certainly is the case. For more background information on the project and the likelihood of a sequel, head over to our sister site, GameFragger.com. Warcraft arrives in theaters on June 10, 2016. The film is a 3D epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based upon Blizzard Entertainment’s globally-renowned universe. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt and Duncan Jones, the film is a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production.

Chicago – The best that can be said for the video game adaptation “Warcraft” is that it’s not the incoherent, CGI heavy and Michael-Bay-type nightmare it could have been. It’s still somewhat incoherent – full of computer generated cannon fodder – but I am surprised and happy to report it did not induce any headaches, even in pointless 3D.

“Warcraft” is less a video game movie – it’s based on the popular game “Warcraft” – and more of a third rate “Lord Of The Rings” ripoff. This time a group of human knights and kings form an uneasy alliance with a band of pensive, monster-like “Orcs” to take down a greater and deeper magic that threatens to destroy the entire world.
The plot involves a sinister corrupting form of magic known as the Fell. It’s main side effect seems to be bringing a greenish tint to the eyes of all whom it touches,...

Chicago – The best that can be said for the video game adaptation “Warcraft” is that it’s not the incoherent, CGI heavy and Michael-Bay-type nightmare it could have been. It’s still somewhat incoherent – full of computer generated cannon fodder – but I am surprised and happy to report it did not induce any headaches, even in pointless 3-D.
“Warcraft” is less a video game movie – based on the online phenomenon “World of Warcraft” – and more of a third rate “Lord Of The Rings” ripoff. This time a group of human knights and kings form an uneasy alliance with a band of pensive, monster-like “Orcs” to take down a greater and deeper magic that threatens to destroy the entire world.

So, we’re almost at the halfway point for movie year 2016. Since we’re a few weeks into the Summer flick season, the studios are trying to hedge their bets (and investments) by delivering entertainment with a recognizable name. There’s been a glut of sequels (two this very weekend), and two franchise films based on comic book characters (Cap’s latest is the year’s biggest hit). Hmmm, what other properties are ripe for cinematic exploitation? Ah yes, games! Just a few weeks ago Angry Birds, an animated romp based on an “app”, grabbed the number one box office slot from the shield-slinger! And this weekend sees a live action/CGI-animated hybrid based on an immensely popular on-line video game that began 22 years ago. Now, the studios have been trying to lure game players into the multiplex for years, well over twenty since those Super Mario Brothers made the...

For my money, there are few up and coming filmmakers who are more exciting to follow than Duncan Jones. He is a director who consistently puts out unique movies that make you always want to see what he has up his sleeve next. This week, he goes big and blockbuster for the first time with Warcraft, based on the obsessively played online computer game. It’s my least favorite work from Jones, I concede that, having loved Moon and dug Source Code, but it’s his most ambitious, so that’s of note too, as well. That being said, it’s finally getting him into the mainstream, so I can take that as a real positive. It may even get a passion project or two of his (like the science fiction tale Mute) off the ground! This epic film is an adaptation of the video game World of Warcraft. It...

With its vast tapestry of knights, orcs, and mages, the World of Warcraft franchise was always going to be a tricky one to adapt. As fans of the Mmorpg (I can’t claim to be one of them, though I did some research before heading into the pic) know well, there’s so much packed into the series’ lore that it inarguably lends itself better to encyclopedias than films.
And so director Duncan Jones, who makes a lot of very smart choices behind the camera of Warcraft, makes one of his wisest in choosing to tell an origin story for this world, working from the stories of the original strategy game that predated any online video-game take. In doing so, he’s able to focus the movie exponentially, making heroes and villains out of the individuals involved in World of Warcraft‘s catalyzing moment...

Today I turned 46 years old. I’m not sure if that’s too old for me to play video games. I certainly hope not, since I find them relaxing in a way that is valuable to me. Then again, I’m not sure who gets to decide if they are or aren’t appropriate, since I’m part of the first generation to be able to grow up playing games. I was there for Pong and Space Invaders and Asteroids and Pac-Man, and I was there for the first consoles at home. I’ve been a fan as long as there have been video games, and I remain a devoted fan of gaming in general even if I don’t always love the culture around it. What I find strange is how completely and utterly I have somehow avoided World Of Warcraft. Unlike films, where I find that I’m open to pretty much anything,...

A great videogame adaptation at last, or another grind? Here’s our review of Duncan Jones’ action fantasy, Warcraft...
Gryphons. Dark magic. Orcs swinging colossal hammers that make Thor’s Mjolnir look like one of those little things your grandmother uses to smash up toffee. Based on the Blizzard videogames of the same name, Warcraft marks a considerable change of pace for Duncan Jones, who previously brought us the deliciously poignant Moon and the taut sci-fi thriller, Source Code.
If there’s a connecting thread between Warcraft and Jones’ earlier movies, it’s in its effervescent tone and clear affection for genre movies of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Where Moon lovingly referenced Silent Running or Outland, Warcraft appears to take its cue not from the blood-and-thunder fantasy of the trendy Game Of Thrones, but old-school fare like Beastmaster, Legend and the movies of Ray Harryhausen.

Warcraft is going to easily be one of the most visually stunning films of the year. I also think it will end up being one of the best video game films made so far.
Today we have a new featurette called “The Beginning” with new footage from the film along with interviews with the cast and crew. This featurette is actually the best piece of marketing for the film I've seen so far. There's also a second featurette that focuses on Paula Patton's transformation into the character Garona.
I also included a series of portraits that focus on the CGI characters of the film and the actors who portray them. They highlight the transformation that took place to turn these humans into Orcs for this film.
The effects of the film were done by Ilm, and they did such an incredible job bringing these characters to life. The detail...

Do you plan on seeing Warcraft in theaters this June? Going by comments around these parts, skepticism is starting to turn into apprehensive optimism. The film certainly has a talented cast and director. The marketing appears to be hitting its stride as well, after a few questionable, early trailers. The video game adaptation will face competition at the box office from X-Men: Apocalypse (05/27), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (06/03), The Conjuring 2 (06/10), Central Intelligence (06/17) and Finding Dory (06/17). The film should perform very well overseas, as a large percentage of the remaining Warcraft fan base is located in China, the U.K. and South Korea. Check out the brand new trailer for Warcraft (or, "Warcraft: The Beginning") below. These last two Warcraft posters spotlight a couple of characters that have been largely absent from the movie's promotion thus far: Medivh and Khadgar. Both of these guys are Mages that begin fighting for the alliance, but one may have some hidden motives - if the movie follows the story laid out in the video games, that is. No spoilers here, so ask a Wow fan in the comments section to fill you in if you're curious!
