TIFF’s plans to launch an official content market in 2026 has got the Croisette buzzing and sparked mixed reactions, with some industry sources expressing enthusiasm while others have cautioned against a more cluttered calendar.
CEO Cameron Bailey and chief programming officer Anita Lee announced the initiative yesterday. Backed by a $16.9m (C$23m) investment by the Canadian federal government, it will expand on the existing unofficial marketplace and include film, series and Xr screenings, and tentpole packages.

While the film industry mourned the loss of one of their favorite Cannes rituals, a beach party thrown every year by the Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey promised to throw a “refreshed” version next year. He dropped into Cannes to announce a landmark $23 million Cad investment supported by the Canadian federal government, for a new content initiative to begin in 2026 that will expand TIFF’s scope of offerings. This is the single largest government investment TIFF has received since the campaign to build TIFF Lightbox. The three-year investment will enable the organization to accelerate planning and development work that is currently underway.

The Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) is getting a market.
TIFF on Thursday confirmed that it will add an official film market to run alongside its festival program, billing the venture as the “North American hub for buying and selling screen-based projects, intellectual property, and immersive and innovative content across all platforms” that aims to “elevate Canadian and international talent while driving global distribution and sales.”
Toronto has long been a spot where business gets done — major deals for the upcoming The Crow reboot and Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut Woman of the Hour were inked at or just before TIFF last year — but unlike Cannes or Berlin, the festival has never had an official bazaar where buyers and sellers can set up shop. Instead, U.S. and international film buyers and sellers networked and did business informally while circulating around the festival or in hotel rooms, rather than under one roof.

The Toronto International Film Fest will launch an official market, kicking off in 2026 and boosted by a generous C$23 million (US$16.9 million) of funding from Canada’s Federal Government. TIFF organizers said the new market will be a “game-changer” for the Canadian and wider international business. Festival CEO, Cameron Bailey, told Deadline he wants to see industry attendance more than double.
“We have been a great platform to buy and sell and pitch for so many years, but I think there’s so much more we can do by providing bigger, more robust infrastructure, and more opportunities for people to meet,” the festival boss said. “We have plans to grow from about 5,000 industry delegates to over 12,000 in the next few years.”

Netflix has acquired the Oscar-nominated documentary feature “To Kill a Tiger.”
The film, about a father’s pursuit of justice in rural India, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was awarded best documentary at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival. “To Kill a Tiger” was, up until now, the only film this year to be nominated for the best feature doc Oscar without distribution.
Directed and written by New Delhi-born director Nisha Pahuja (“The World Before Her”), the 127-minute film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, who forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape.
Variety‘s film critic Siddhant Adlakha wrote in his “To Kill a Tiger” review that the docu “is a powerful and risky example of the vitality of modern nonfiction filmed in South Asia. It joins recent films like “All That Breathes,...

The slimmed-down TIFF 2023 is not exactly unfolding as the return to a full-bore robust international film festival that CEO Cameron Bailey had envisioned. He has made the best of a tough situation, as combined actors and writers strikes reduced the number of players willing to walk the red carpet and do the media junkets that have long made the festival a launchpad for the fall movie season. While the usual stargazing on King Street was diminished, the city of Toronto nonetheless shut down the thoroughfare for the opening night of the festival and the atmosphere was festive.
On opening night, Bailey was all smiles. He knew that master storyteller Hayao Miyazaki’s return from retirement, “The Boy and the Heron,” possibly his last film, was screening for the first time for moviegoers outside Japan, where the renowned director refused to preview or promote the movie before it hit theaters. Mindy Kaling and Dev Patel have signed on to executive produce the documentary “To Kill a Tiger,” a gripping story about a father’s pursuit of justice in rural India.
Directed and written by Nisha Pahuja (“The World Before Her”), the film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, who forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape.
“Gender equity and justice within India have been central to my work over the past decade,” said Pahuja. “With ‘To Kill a Tiger,’ I encountered a story that simply had to be told because of the bravery, honesty, and resilience of the family at the heart of it. I’m grateful for Mindy and Dev’s belief in this film and its capacity to empower and serve as a catalyst for change, while building on the work of many activists and organizations.
