Dwayne Johnson's long-awaited take on "Black Adam" had a very bumpy road to the big screen, but it has finally arrived. Helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the latest from DC is an action-packed introduction to the protector of Kahndaq, a man who lived thousands of years locked away after being granted the almighty power of the gods. A passion project for Johnson, the film came to be after 14 years of planning, starting, stopping, and throwing ideas at the wall. Between that and the loaded comic book history of the character, it was no simple task for scribes Adan Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani to whittle those ideas down to a single script. Nor was it easy for editors, Mike Sale and John Lee to turn hours of footage into 125 minutes worth of movie.

Some great films were released on the same day as such recent hits as The Dark Knight Rises and Frozen. Here are a few of them...
Odd List
The 3rd July 2013 saw the release of Disney's The Lone Ranger, its larger-than-life western starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. Its theatrical debut marked the end of a lengthy and difficult production, stories from which had been hungrily served up by the media - the previous summer was dominated by news stories of its spiralling budget, which was thought to have crossed $250m. Nevertheless, the 2013 blockbuster season should, in theory, have marked a fresh start for Disney, as it spent a reported $150m on marketing The Lone Ranger. But the House of Mouse hadn't counted on the popularity of another film launched on that exact same day in July: Universal's animated sequel, Despicable Me 2.

Leviathan | Saving Mr Banks | Carrie | Jeune & Jolie | Marius, Fanny | Saving Santa | The Best Man Holiday | Free Birds | Day Of The Flowers | Life's A Breeze
Leviathan (12A)
(Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Véréna Paravel, 2012, Fra/UK/Us) 87 mins
An arthouse fishing-trawler documentary sounds like a practical joke, but this takes us to places we've never before – into the ocean depths and back out on to the decks with the catch. It's a series of dark, semi-abstract tableaux full of flapping fish, clanking machinery and tattooed fishermen doing wet, gory work. It's easy to forget this is real life you're watching.
Saving Mr Banks (PG)
(John Lee Hancock, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson. 125 mins
How Walt Disney came to make Mary Poppins was hardly a pressing movie mystery, and one suspects a spoonful of drama has been added, but the leads are eminently watchable.
Carrie (15)
(Kimberly Peirce, 2013, Us) Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore. 100 mins

Let’s hope that Snow White & The Huntsman is the final revival of Snow White for awhile. Fans of ABC’s Once Upon a Time have had their fill each week, Mirror, Mirror was an abomination, and readers of the Vertigo comic, Fables would agree that it remains as the best contemporary take on re-imagining fairy tales. But there was still plenty to like about this latest Hollywood endeavor, directed by Rupert Sanders, who makes his feature debut after building his reputation shooting commercials.
The story at its apple core is familiar. Evil Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron, Prometheus) tricks a widower King Magnus (Noah Huntley) into thinking she was a prisoner of a phantom army. She casts her spell but she doesn’t need to. Watch that Christian Dior “J’Adore” commercial and tell me none of you would have been crippled by Theron’s beauty.

The work of editors is often overlooked. Miguel Gonzalez found that, as if that wasn’t bad enough, they now have more footage to work through but not more time to do so, and tight budgets mean assistant editors are becoming a rare luxury.
“It’s like cuttting off three of an editor’s fingers,” said Underbelly editor Deb Peart about the absence of assistant editors during the crucial moments of the editing process.
Due to budgetary reasons, assistants are frequently taken off jobs once the film has been shot, and then brought back at the end.
“I started as an assistant, learning from sitting with directors and editors and observing them work together in the cutting room and watching the cut develop. They’re now taking away that period of learning from assistants, because when they’re doing rushes they’re chained to their desk, getting what they can...
