Here’s a dirty little secret about costume designers: They’re, by their own admission, rude. “I think costume designers are like the rudest people out there ever,” Christine Bieselin Clark (“Star Trek: Picard”) joked during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: Costume Design panel (watch above). “We’re constantly in other people’s business. They’re like, ‘Why are you staring at me?’”
That’s because costume designers might often find more inspiration in life than in a costume house. “People are our biggest research as well, life itself. Sometimes I see the funniest looking people and I think, ‘Oh my God! If I tried to produce that character onscreen, people would look at me like I’m crazy,’” Johnetta Boone (“Yellowstone”) added during the panel, which also featured Sarah Evelyn (“Hollywood”), Leigh Leverett (“Patsy & Loretta”) and Marina Toybina (“The Masked Singer”). “But then you realize that’s...

Leigh Leverett wasn’t a big country music fan, but the costume designer is “more so now” after working on “Patsy and Loretta.”
The Lifetime movie highlights the friendship between the two country music legends, starting in 1961, when Patsy Cline (Megan Hilty), already a star, takes aspiring singer Loretta Lynn (Jessie Mueller) under her wing. They remained close as Lynn’s star rose until Cline died in a plane crash in 1963 at just 30. After joining the project, Leverett immediately jumped into research.
“We recreated a lot of moments that there are pictures of and did a lot of research,” she told Gold Derby during our Meet the Btl Experts: Costume Design panel (watch above). “We pretty much started looking at all the plot points in the script and match as much as we could and see what we could find. And there’s a lot of everyday stuff that we...

I literally gasped the first time I saw a picture of Nina Dobrev rocking her black vintage gown in last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries. (I’ll be honest, usually such reactions are reserved for the male cast members… and it has nothing to do with their style.)
Costume designer Leigh Leverett really outdid herself across the board on this episode — from Stefan and Damon’s tuxedos (Armani and John Varvatos, respectively) to Caroline’s cobalt Alberto Makali. But, as you might have guessed, looking this good is hard work.
Don’t believe me? Take Dobrev’s word...
