- While in Auschwitz Primo fell ill will Scarlet Fever. When the camp was being evacuated by the SS, the healthy prisoners were forced to go on a death march. Most of the prisoners who were already malnourished perished on this death march. Primo was spared this because he was in the camp infirmary with other gravely ill prisoners. Ironically enough he lived and the camp was liberated.
