After a two-year break because of the pandemic, this year’s Luck Reunion, the daylong gotta-see-it-to-believe-it festival at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch outside of Austin, was already destined to be special. Fans and artists alike were eager to commune in one of the most magical festival settings in the country. But the death of Bobbie Nelson, Willie’s older sister, last week at age 91 increased the emotional weight.

Jerry Jeff Walker, the “Mr. Bojangles” songwriter and a pioneer of the “cosmic cowboy” sound that would evolve into outlaw country, died Friday after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 78. Walker’s publicist confirmed his death to Rolling Stone.
Born Ronald Clyde Crosby in Oneonta, New York, in 1942, Walker made his way south, living for a time in the Florida Keys and in New Orleans, where he took his stage name. In 1971, he landed in Austin, Texas, and became a fixture of the local music scene, where artists like Willie Nelson,...

Released early in 1972, a time when concept albums were regularly being delivered to record stores, The Ballad of Calico checked all the boxes. Narrative storyline with songs sung in the voices of characters? Check. Cover packaging that made it look more like a scrapbook than an album? Check. Accompanying booklet laying out the concept? Check. Symphonic fanfare that opens the album and is reprised at the end? Check. All of it spread over two LPs, just like Tommy and Jesus Chris Superstar? Double check.

At last September’s International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, also known as the “Hillbilly Grammys,” the smart money was on Jerry Douglas’ Earls of Leicester to win the Entertainer of the Year grand prize. Formed to pay tribute to bluegrass forefathers Flatt & Scruggs, the Earls were reigning champions for the past three straight years. In a surprising upset, however, Entertainer honors instead went to Balsam Range, a workmanlike North Carolina quintet that has quietly built up a reputation over the past decade as one of the top acts in bluegrass.

Jerry Jeff Walker has never been one to do what he was supposed to do. A military dropout who scored a Top 10 hit in writing “Mr. Bojangles,” he left New York City for Austin, Texas, long before it was known as the “Live Music Capitol of the World.” And in the summer of 1973, Walker cut an LP, ¡Viva Terlingua!, that helped lay the foundation for the outlaw country sub-genre of country music.

The fashion model, who is the niece of former U.S. President George W. Bush, wore a Victorian-style bridal gown designed by her new father-in-law Lauren at the ceremony on a ranch overlooking the Rocky Mountains on Sunday.
Guests including her famous uncle watched as Bush arrived in a horse-drawn carriage before walking down the aisle as the sun set over the mountains.
Bush's elderly grandparents - George H.W. and his wife Barbara - were unable to attend due to the high altitude of the ceremony, but they reportedly recorded a video message for the couple, which was played during the rehearsal on Saturday.
Singer Michael Martin Murphey provided the entertainment following the nuptials at the Western-themed event in front of around 200 well-wishers.

After a seemingly endless absence from golf (and from the public spotlight in general), Tiger Woods has returned to the game that made him into one of the most recognizable celebrities on the planet. The Masters, one of golf's crown jewels, kicks off on Thursday (April 8), but Woods hit the links today for a bit of practice in his first public display of golf in months. Following his public apology and a series of low-key interviews, Woods is ready to get back to business, and the golf world couldn't be happier. Despite his long layoff, Woods is expected to be a top contender in this year's tournament, and some experts are saying that he should be considered the favorite to win another iconic green jacket (it would be the fifth in his career) and his first major win since his epic defeat of Rocco Mediate at the 2008 U.S. Open Championship.
