DirecTV premiered its first original scripted series "Rogue," an undercover cop drama starring Thandie Newton, on April 3. Now the satellite provider is upping its original programming game with "Full Circle," another scripted series, this one the television debut of Neil Labute. DirecTV's ordered 10 episodes of "Full Circle," a high concept half-hour series Labute created, is writing and will co-executive produce to air on DirecTV's exclusive Audience Network in the fall of 2013. The show is based on Arthur Schnitzler's classic play "La Ronde," which daisy-chained ten pairs of lovers up and down the social classes in ten scenes, starting and ending with the Whore. "La Ronde" has been much abused in recent film, with Fernando Meirelles' "360" and Alexis Lloyd's "30 Beats" attempting none-too-successfully to use the narrative format in a contemporary setting. Paz de la Huerta steams up 30 Beats.
A summer heat wave and a series of equally steamy sexual encounters connect a group of New Yorkers in the 2012 independent comedy romance film 30 Beats.
Ten overheated New Yorkers—including Erika (Jennifer Tilly, Stuart Little 2), Adam (Justin Kirk, TV’s Weeds), Laura (Paz de la Huerta, TV’s Boardwalk Empire), Diego (Jason Day) and Julian (Thomas Sadowski, TV’s The Newsroom)—are drawn into a complex ring of love and desire, each one caught beyond his or her control in a chain reaction of seduction, impulses and self- discovery.
Written and directed by Alexis Lloyd, the R-rated 30 Beats was released simultaneously in theaters and Video-On-Demand in July, 2012 by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions. Reviewed tepidly by critics, the limited run in theaters didn’t drum up much business at the box office, despite that...

There’s a moment in 30 Beats, from first-time writer/director Alexis Lloyd, where an attractive older woman (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) is trying to seduce a young man (Ben Levin) in a spa. The young man is unaware his father has actually hired the woman, a prostitute, to be his first sexual experience. As the two sit staring at each other across a hot tub, we briefly hear their inner thoughts about just how awkward the situation is and what the hell should they do now? It’s a sweet and funny exchange because it resonates as truthful. Yet, by being the only...

Ten young New Yorkers who all look like they just stepped out of a Benettton catalog are connected by a summer heat wave and a series of steamy sexual encounters in 30 Beats, which features an ensemble cast that includes Lee Pace, Condola Rashad, Justin Kirk, Thomas Sadoski, and Jennifer Tilly (with the exception of Ms Tilly, I hadn’t heard of these people either). In a chain sequence of events, writer-director Alexis Lloyd’s lifeless drama leapfrogs from person to person, and barely-connected vignette to vignette. A pattern of ennui, boredom, pretentious dialog, and sexual hook-ups emerges, as the movie probes the world of New York City as we’ve seen it in a thousand TV commercials. It starts (and ends) with Julie (Condola Rashad) determined to lose her virginity to her best friend Adam (Justin Kirk). She doesn’t need to twist his arm but he becomes impotent as...
