My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

A lot of people are trying to take credit for Soda’s vote-out on Survivor. Venus took credit just minutes after the vote. Tevin planned on taking credit later, presumably if he ever hit those Final 3 Tribal Council seats, and Liz told the camera that voting “Soda” was not only her idea, but she had been planning on voting her out from the early days on Nami. Even the elusive Survivor “monster,” wherever he, she or it may be hiding, probably wants full kudos for poor Soda’s demise.

Kevin Bacon, dancing away, in 4K? Footloose is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, it’s been confirmed.
Paramount Pictures is wasting little time sorting new catalogue releases for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in 2024, with the news that the 1980s hit Footloose is heading to the format.
Already confirmed in America, a UK release has now been earmarked for February 12th 2024, and the film has gone up for order now. You can find it here.
Initially, it’s only available as a Steelbook release, although it’s expected that a regular 4K disc package isn’t far away. It’s the original film, incidentally, that’s getting the release, and not the remake.
Update: The regular, cheaper release is now confirmed for 13th May 2024. You can find it here.
Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow thus take the lead roles here, with Herbert Ross behind the camera.

Kenny Loggins spoke of one Elvis Presley song in religious terms. He didn’t mention that the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was not the first singer to record the song. The tune in question has been cited as an all-time classic. That might not be the case.
Kenny Loggins’ favorite Elvis Presley song is 1 of the most famous
In a 2022 article, Grammy.com asked several artists from different genres to name their favorite tune by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Donny Osmond chose “Polk Salad Annie” and Dan Smith from Bastille chose “Unchained Melody.” Loggins, on the other hand, picked a track that was far more famous.
“When ‘Hound Dog’ came out in 1956, I was eight years old,” he recalled. “I would come home from school and would sneak into my brother’s room to play his 45 over and over again. It’s one of the greatest songs of all time.

Huey Lewis stopped by The Daily Show to discuss the new Broadway jukebox musical featuring Huey Lewis and the News hits, The Heart of Rock and Roll (get tickets here). Along the way, he played a game of “Fuck, Marry, Kill” with classic ’80s albums.
With host Jordan Klepper — who has stepped in for the newly-returned John Stewart for the rest of the week — Huey was given the choice to “Fuck, Marry, Kill” the four albums that went number one in 1984.
He was presented with Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Prince’s Purple Rain, Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA, and Kenny Loggins’ Footloose. Lewis swiftly decided to kill Footloose, saying “Kenny Loggins won’t mind, he’s a good guy.” He then said he’d “make love to Born in the USA,” and that he would “fall in love with Thriller” — he did, however, clarify that he prefers Michael...

In a much-anticipated duet more than 20 years in the making, Willie Nelson was finally joined onstage by Kermit the Frog to perform “Rainbow Connection” together Thursday at the Luck Reunion.
The Oscar-nominated song was a hit for Kermit (and Jim Henson) after it featured in 1979’s The Muppet Movie, and over the next decades was covered by the likes of the Carpenters, the Chicks, Kenny Loggins, and Nelson, whose tender rendition became a classic in its own right after it featured on his 2001 album also titled Rainbow Connection.

When Quincy Jones posted a sign above the entrance to Am Studios in Los Angeles that read “Check Your Ego at the Door,” the night the producer and a group of 40 or so of the biggest singers of the ‘80s recorded the charity anthem “We are the World.”
It wasn’t exactly foolproof.
“The egos were still there; let’s not pretend they weren’t there,” says Kenny Loggins in the documentary The Greatest Night in Pop, now streaming on Netflix.
The Bao Nguyen film, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of how the single that raised more than $80 million ($214 million today) for humanitarian aid in Africa and the United States came to be, with commentary from entertainers such as Loggins, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Sheila E., Huey Lewis, and the key orchestrator who co-wrote the song with Michael Jackson and kept the...

Plot: In late 1984, inspired by the success of Band-Aid in the UK, legendary producer Quincy Jones decides to make a charity single including all of the biggest pop stars in the country. Due to the complicated schedules of all involved, they only have one evening to complete what will become one of the best-selling singles of all time, “We Are the World.”
Review: If you’ve seen the music video for “We Are the World,” you’ll know that pretty much every pop-rock icon of the first half of the eighties was there for its recording. In addition to co-writers Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, there was Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Paul Simon, Steve Perry and so many more. Even Dan Aykroyd showed up singing in the chorus.

Lionel Richie has been very emotional lately, but he wants to reassure everyone that he’s okay.
According to Richie, it’s just been a heady experience to look back nearly 40 years and relive all the wondrous and chaotic memories of writing and recording “We Are the World” for the new Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop.”
“Every segment of this journey, I cry,” Richie said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere. “It just brings tears to my eyes because some of us are not here anymore. Also it was our innocence. We actually were making a difference, so to see the naive version of ourselves, when we actually had an aha moment that we might take all this celebrity and change the world … I’m just emotional about it because I get to watch my kid being born again.

One of the biggest pop culture moments of the 80s was when a large group of pop artists came together for a special one-time song dedicated to raising awareness and helping to end famine in Africa. That song, “We Are the World,” was amazingly stacked with talent, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis. A documentary from Netflix recounts the story of how the song came together with The Greatest Night in Pop. The film is also scheduled to screen at the Sundance Film Festival this year, with Lionel Richie in tow.
Netflix’s description of the documentary reads,
“On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history.

"Let's get this party started." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a music history documentary film called The Greatest Night in Pop, directed by doc filmmaker Bao Nguyen (of the Bruce Lee doc Be Water previously). This film was a last minute addition to the exciting Sundance 2024 line-up, playing at the prestigious film festival in a few weeks before it debuts on Netflix at the end of January. In 1985, 46 music icons, including Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder, came together for the most star-studded recording session in history. This is the untold story of the legendary global pop song "We Are the World" (listen here) recorded to help bring more support to African famine relief — which very nearly didn't happen. Exclusive: Netflix has set a January 29 streaming premiere date for The Greatest Night in Pop, a feature doc just announced as world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on the 19th of this month.
Directed by award winner Bao Nguyen (Be Water), the film takes viewers back to January 25, 1985, when dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a Los Angeles studio and checked their egos at the door amidst the recording of a song to benefit African famine relief — one that would alter global pop culture history. Chronicled in the doc is the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a time before cell phones and email. That group of artists, led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.

While having an idol may give a player a certain degree of security, that doesn’t mean he or she is protected by an impenetrable forcefield. In Wednesday’s episode of Survivor, someone learned that the hard way.
With just eight castaways left in the game, Jake is tired of being a pawn, while the gang is hankering to flush Bruce’s idol. But for Julie, the deception of the game is beginning to weigh on her. She says she’s hurt that there are two people out there (Kellie and Kendra) who now think “Mama J” is untrustworthy.

I first heard about FX’s “Archer” in the ready room of Vaq-135, a navy squadron who were serving an interminable deployment aboard an aircraft carrier somewhere near Midway Island. (This sounds very much like a humblebrag that Sterling Archer would obnoxiously drop into conversation). It was 2010, and the pilots had lost whatever idealism they’d once had during an endless deployment that had them flying 12-hour missions from the Persian Gulf to Afghanistan. I started hearing the officers stage-whisper “danger zone” whenever one of them got called in to see the commanding officer over some minor fuck-up or summoned to the flight deck in the pitch black of an ocean night.
Now, famously, “Danger Zone” is a Kenny Loggins song that plays a significant role in the homoerotic original recipe “Top Gun,” the urtext of naval aviators. But the way the pilots were saying it suggested they were taking the piss.

Some opinions just don’t age well. A member of a pioneering 1960s band said The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude” didn’t live up to the Fab Four’s early songs. One of his bandmates told him he was wrong. That bandmate went on to become a star in his own right.
Kenny Loggins clashed with his bandmate over The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’
Superstar Kenny Loggins was once a member of the psychedelic rock band The Electric Prunes. Today, The Electric Prunes are most known for their early hits “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)” and “Get Me to the World on Time.” During a 2022 interview with Stereogum, he named “Hey Jude” as his favorite composition by Paul McCartney.
“I was probably just joining The Electric Prunes when ‘Hey Jude’ came out,” Loggins recalled. “I was writing with a keyboardist named Jeromy Stuart. He was really ready to try...

The notion that, 40 years ago, Madonna was a shooting star predestined for the stratosphere is the stuff of pop music myth. The then-twentysomething singer’s demo tape, which included early versions of classics like “Everybody” and “Burning Up,” was rebuffed multiple times before she finally landed a deal with Sire Records, best known for punk and new wave acts like Talking Heads and the Ramones. Madonna became the label’s flagship act, thanks to the slow-burning success of her self-titled album, which finally hit the Top 10 more than a year after its debut and would go on to spend a staggering 165 consecutive weeks on the Billboard chart.
Madonna was so eager to move on from her debut and release her second album, Like a Virgin, that, during an on-air interview with MTV, she publicly hexed her latest single, “Borderline,” hoping it would “fizzle out.” No such luck. The song became...

Kenny Loggins will embark on a farewell tour in 2023. The aptly titled “This Is It Tour” will see the “Danger Zone” singer will play concerts and festivals in cities including New Orleans, Chicago, New York City, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles over the course of the coming months.
“I don’t see this as the end of my professional career, but certainly a halt to the grind of major touring,” Loggins said in a statement. The 75-year-old musician added that there was no particular reason for his impending retirement from tour, other than “after spending a lifetime on the road, I want to have more time at home.”

Tom Cruise got plenty of attention at the 2023 Oscars, and he wasn’t even in the building.
The star and producer of Top Gun: Maverick, which was nominated for six Academy Awards including best picture, did not attend the ceremony held Sunday at the Dolby Theatre. Cruise, who received a best picture nomination as a Maverick producer, has been busy with production on the eighth film in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise.
But footage of Cruise from the movie was featured just after the start of the telecast during an introductory montage showing the year’s films. Host Jimmy Kimmel was spliced into a pivotal Maverick scene and appeared to be speaking with Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from the cockpit. After Cruise’s character said to pull the plane’s ejection handles, Kimmel responded, “I don’t want to pull the handles. What’s wrong with this guy?” When Cruise again said to eject,...

I spent a lot of Top Gun: Maverick studying Tom Cruise’s face. It’s a deceptively interesting one – either eerily smooth or comfortingly weathered, depending on the scene; a fitting testament to a man whose intergalactic fame has outlasted seven US presidents and hundreds, if not thousands, of fly-by-night movie stars. Amid the whooshing racket of torpedoes and jet engines, it’s Cruise who emerges as the film’s most compelling special effect. Few other celebrities feel as curiously enigmatic as they are culturally ubiquitous. You can’t quite believe he’s real. He still might not be.
Cruise is up for an Oscar this weekend as a producer on Maverick, meaning he’ll take one home if the film wins Best Picture. He didn’t get the Best Actor nod that at one point seemed predestined, but oddly, Best Picture feels like an appropriate – even preferable – alternative. For Maverick is Cruise.

When Tom Cruise gets choked up during his reunion scene with Val Kilmer in "Top Gun: Maverick," those are some real tears you're seeing in his eyes. Kilmer's return as Iceman, onetime rival of Maverick in the Top Gun program, is relegated to a single scene, but it's one that was packed with emotion for both moviegoers and Cruise as he was filming it.
In real life, Kilmer's speaking ability has been affected by throat cancer treatments; it's only toward the end of his scene that he we hear him utter a few lines of dialogue. Director Joseph Kosinski told USA Today that Kilmer's "voice was digitally altered and blended a little bit just for clarity" in "Top Gun: Maverick." Before Iceman stands up from his desk, speaks, and shares a hug with Maverick, Cruise's protagonist is left sitting across from him and the typed message, "It's time to let go.

The annual Oscar melee always reminds us of this mandate: Never believe the “buzz.” Every important movie arrives with an aura – and it’s usually wrong or misleading.
The advance buzz on The Godfather was so disastrous even Francis Coppola sensed it was doomed. This year, All Quiet on the Western Front was deemed too violent and depressing to be a contender, but it’s collecting BAFTA Awards (seven) and Oscar nominations (nine).
Throughout the ‘80s every popular movie seemed carry a buzz curse. The production of Flashdance was so chaotic that even the stunt doubles had doubles. Footloose was both miscast and underbudgeted, as its director testified.
Clearly both of these early ‘80s movies turned out to be hits, if not cultural milestones. Yet directors of that moment seemed more interested in making war than making movies. In response, studio executives became as helpful as chatbots.

Tom Whitlock, who wrote the lyrics for the rock anthem “Danger Zone” and the chart-topping love song “Take My Breath Away” for the original Top Gun, winning an Oscar in the process, has died. He was 68.
Whitlock died Saturday at a memory care center in Gallatin, Tennessee, a spokesperson at the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri, confirmed. He had Alzheimer’s disease, friends told the Springfield News Leader.
Whitlock wrote both Top Gun songs with Giorgio Moroder. Their relationship began when he fixed the brakes on the Italian composer’s Ferrari.
“Danger Zone,” performed by Kenny Loggins, was employed for the opening scene in the Tony Scott-directed, Tom Cruise-starring 1986 action movie, while “Take My Breath Away,” sung by Terri Nunn of Berlin, inspired the filmmakers to shoot additional scenes with Cruise and Kelly McGillis months later.

“Top Gun: Maverick” was overwhelmingly praised for its ability to bring fresh versions of moments and tropes from the original “Top Gun” into the 21st century. One of the best examples is a scene where Tom Cruise leads his group of pilots in a co-ed game of pickup football on the beach. The scene was an obvious homage to the infamously campy Kenny Loggins-scored volleyball scene from the original film, and quickly became a fan favorite moment.

Despite the fiasco that was Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" live-action series and the atrocity that was their previous "Death Note" live-action movie, it seems the streaming service is determined to keep making live-action anime adaptations until something sticks. Indeed, they currently have several live-action anime re-imaginings in some stage of development, including projects based on "My Hero Academia," "One Piece," and "Yu Yu Hakusho."
To be fair, these are all sensible choices for live-action adaptations; each of these properties are incredibly popular and play into character archetypes, themes, and stories that resonate across the globe. "My Hero Academia" is literally about superheroes (and superheroes are very hot right now), while the other two are action-adventure stories with supernatural elements and tons of fights and comedic moments alike -- not to mention, they also feature characters with superpowers.

"Top Gun: Maverick" is the biggest film of 2022 and on its way to Oscar glory, so why isn't the man who directed it, Joseph Kosinski, at the forefront of that buzz?
If you'd asked critics at the beginning of 2022 what would be not only the most commercially successful film of the year but one of its most unanimously adored, it's unlikely that "Top Gun: Maverick" would have been many people's first choice. The sequel to the Tony Scott '80s cheese classic, released 36 years after its predecessor, saw its premiere delayed multiple times and fought against an early VOD release. In a year still blighted by Covid-19 and cinema attendance in a slump, it didn't seem as though a Tom Cruise nostalgia vehicle could pull in customers.
How wrong we were! "Top Gun: Maverick" has grossed an astonishing 1.487 billion worldwide, staying in the top ten of the American box office for over four months.

A version of this story about “Top Gun: Maverick” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When we asked singer, songwriter, producer, three-time Grammy winner and OneRepublic vocalist Ryan Tedder about writing the smash hit “I Ain’t Worried” (co-written with Brent Kutzle and Tyler Spry) for the shirtless beach football scene in “Top Gun: Maverick,” he talked for 25 minutes without needing a single follow-up question. So we’ll let him tell the story:
“I knew ‘Top Gun: Maverick was being made. I didn’t know any other details. I got a call at the peak of Covid, and I was asked if I would jump on a Zoom with Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer and Chris McHugh, the writer. It lasted probably 30, 45 minutes, and Tom went into depth about why this scene is so critical and what it means to the movie. It’s...
