Plot: Russell Hatch an Interpol operative who takes on the role of father figure to Jayden, the son of an informant killed in a routine raid gone wrong.
Review: It’s nothing new for an action star of the past to show up in these lower-budget films. Geezer Teasers have often been a great way for action stars to cash a quick paycheck. But they tend to amount to nothing more than a bit part, while some younger actor does the majority of the action. So I was pleasantly surprised to see Jean-Claude Van Damme not only take center stage but appear in nearly every frame of Darkness of Man. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he’s not taking the easy way out and I respect him for it.

Jean-Claude Van Damme has kept a fairly low profile compared to many other 80s action heroes. And that includes such non-genre appearances as voice acting in kids films like Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru as well as a cameo in the French comedy Haters. However, Darkness of Man sees him return to the Dtv action spotlight
As the film opens, Russel Hatch lies in a puddle of his own blood, bleeding out from several bullet wounds. He tells us in voice-over that, like every story, this began with a woman. And we go back to Miami two years prior when Hatch was an Interpol agent.

Historically, horror movies have tended to have lower budgets than films in other genres. A large part of this is probably due to the origins of the genre. Slasher films become something of a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s, when movies like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" and "Halloween" in many ways revolutionized the film industry. Such films were usually made on the cheap and relied on clever practical effects and location shooting to deliver the onscreen goods. But what really made these films so influential is that from these modest origins, they killed at the box office, revolutionizing the genre as we know it today.
Since the 1970s, movies of all genres have gotten more expensive to make, and not all of these films can earn back their production costs. While horror has remained an extremely popular genre both in the States and worldwide, scary movies are just as...

"Do whatever it takes." Saban Films has revealed a trailer for an indie action thriller titled Repeater, from action director R. Ellis Frazier. Unfortunately this isn't a time loop sci-fi, it's one of these dime-a-dozen trash action films they're dropping all the time these days. "Find. Kill. Repeat." For hit man Smith, these are the only words to live by. But a botched job forces him to take a high-stakes open contract arranged by his handler. Smith's latest target? The hacker-activist Rousseau, who has run afoul of corrupt corporations and powerful men like Silver. In the border towns of Mexico, Smith confronts local gangs, competing contract killers Botha and Sykes, and a crisis of conscience with deadly consequences. The film stars Paul Sidhu, Kristanna Loken, Nick Moran, James Faulkner, with Corbin Bernsen and Gary Daniels. Ugh this looks as generic and as forgettable as they come, everything is so derivative and uninteresting.

Back in the early 2000s, superhero movies were on the rise again, thanks to the success of X-Men (2000) and Sam Raimi’s blockbuster Spider-Man (2002). But the idea of an interconnected series of superhero movies — the concept that became the Marvel Cinematic Universe — was still a few years away, while many of Marvel’s characters were owned by a wide variety of studios and production companies.
Fox had the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, Sony had Spider-Man, Paramount owned Iron Man, Universal had the Hulk, and Lionsgate had the rights to Russian spy and Avengers member Natasha Romanoff, i.e. Black Widow. All of these were in partnership with the then-fledgling Marvel Studios, headed by Avi Arad, but it was up to the individual studios to greenlight the projects.

James Cameron’s breakout film “The Terminator” may not have been a hit in theaters, but it was such a cult favorite on home video that it spawned one of the biggest and most lucrative movie franchises in history. With “Terminator: Dark Fate” in theaters, let’s look back at all six feature films in the saga, and see how they stack up against each other.
6. “Terminator Salvation” (2009)
The fourth “Terminator” movie has a great cast — Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Helena Bonham Carter — and a smart idea, to give all the time-travel a rest and actually set one of these post-apocalyptic thrillers after the apocalypse for a change. Unfortunately, director McG is more interested in chaotic action than in the story, the new revelations about the universe are groan-inducing, and Sam Worthington’s forgettable protagonist, a survivor with a secret, takes valuable screen time away from everyone and everything else.

If you were to make three huge bets in quick succession and lose them all, chances are you wouldn’t try it again. However, despite funneling a combined total of $540 million in production costs into the last three installments in the Terminator franchise without any of them launching the trilogy that they were supposed to, you can guarantee that we still haven’t seen the last of the once-mighty sci-fi series.
Although we’d already heard it twice before with Salvation and Genisys, Dark Fate was the one that felt the most likely to restore the flagging brand to former glories, based entirely on the long-awaited return of James Cameron. He may not have been directing, but producer and story credits were enough to convince many skeptics that Terminator could be set for a rejuvenation.
Of course, that didn’t happen and it ended up as one of the biggest...

Everyone knows at this point that Arnold Schwarzenegger was nowhere near James Cameron’s first choice to play the title character in The Terminator, but by the time the credits rolled on the classic sci-fi thriller, the big Austrian had established the relentless killing machine as a cinematic icon. The franchise might finally be over for good now after Dark Fate delivered the fourth subpar sequel in a row and bombed at the box office, but dragging the series out for 35 years is still an impressive achievement.
These days, when you hear the word ‘Terminator,’ your mind instantly jumps to Schwarzenegger’s leather and sunglasses wearing T-800, but there’ve been plenty of other actors that have played a Cyberdyne Systems model over the years. Robert Patrick’s T-1000 is obviously the benchmark, but we’ve also seen Kristanna Loken, Sam Worthington, Jason Clarke and Gabriel Luna embody various incarnations...

I’ve been a fan of horror anthology films for a long time, since the first time I laid eyes upon freaky treats like Creepshow and such, so I’m always intrigued when another pops up, in this case a French horror anthology that started life as a TV series, but has been reshuffled into an anthology feature here.
Dark Stories takes five horror stories and injects them into our veins with horror, suspense and thrills galore, with alien life, zombies, ghosts and ghouls to tickle the taste buds of any horror lover, it manages to change pace and tone regularly to keep things from becoming tedious or samey, which I thought really set it apart.

(Major spoilers ahead for “Terminator: Dark Fate”)
“Terminator: Dark Fate” is a strange situation. It’s a franchise movie that wants to pretend most of the franchise didn’t actually happen. It wants to pick up directly from “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” and just ignore “Terminator 3,” “Salvation” and “Genisys.”
But for a movie that wants to write off several of its predecessors, it’s interesting that it it seems to so liberally borrow from them. When I watched “Dark Fate” I couldn’t help but notice how much of the film is taken from the previous five movies. So while James Cameron and producer Tim Miller might be trying to make you forget half the franchise, it actually did a much better job of reminding me of those movies.
So let’s get into the nitty gritty. I’m going to largely focus here on the big things, because I...

If there’s one thing that separates the first two installments in James Cameron’s Terminator from the rest of the sequels, it’s the fact that Terminator 1 and 2 had an R-rating. And according to Arnold Schwarzenegger, that’s what makes the originals significantly superior to the other parts of the franchise.
Recently, Paramount released a new featurette from the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate, where Arnold makes a return to the series along with Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong. The footage offered up a glimpse at a world that’s descended into chaos as a full-fledged war has apparently broken out between humans and machines.
During an Ama on Reddit, the Terminator team took the time to answer fan questions and drop a possible spoiler or two, and when someone asked Schwarzenegger about the new movie’s rating, he got a very detailed and emphatic response from the actor who has,...

The highly renowned Fantasia International Film Festival is happening now in Montreal and we’re kicking off our coverage with a woman who’s an absolute legend in martial arts and cult film. In a time of superhero movies where powerful female characters are growing to be more progressive and established in fandom, Cynthia Rothrock would be one of the cinematic matriarchs of every feminine but extremely tough and well-rounded characters we see today.
In Northern California in 1983, Hong Kong-based production company Golden Harvest was searching the United States for the next Bruce Lee. After witnessing her skills in a demonstration, they signed the young Rothrock to a contract which had her appear in several films overseas including Yes, Madam, along with superstar Michelle Yeoh. She stayed in Hong Kong until 1988 and upon her return to the Us, starred in a number of cult movies.

At one point and time Kristanna Loken was going to be a big star. Her place in Hollywood seemed assured when she hit the big screen in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. She had the looks, she had the attitude, and, well, that’s kind of where it ended. Someone thought she could act otherwise she wouldn’t be where she is, but considering that there are plenty of actors out there that couldn’t seem to remember a line if it was fed to them off screen she’s not the worst. It could be that in the beginning of her career

Video game movies have a bad reputation because, well, there are very few that we’d call “good.” At their best, at least so far, the big screen versions of video games have been fun and trashy entertainment. At their worst, however, they’re as bad as anything else we’ve ever seen in a movie theater.
So let’s rank ‘em!
41. “Postal” (2008)
The pinnacle of director Uwe Boll‘s string of horrendous video game movies (he has five that qualify for this list by getting theatrical releases somewhere), but to be fair it’s probably still a better work of art than the game it’s based on.
40. “Alone in the Dark” (2005)
“House of the Dead” briefly tricked us into thinking Uwe Boll was a camp master, but his next video game movie, “Alone in the Dark,” was such an incomprehensible slog that I have never been able to...

Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has played his fair share of superheroes from the title character in Kick-Ass to Quicksilver in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron, but in Doug Liman’s The Wall, he gets to play a real superhero; Sergeant Allen Isaac, a soldier in Iraq trapped behind the title wall and pinned down by a sniper. Said sniper finds a way to tap into Isaac’s earpiece, and he begins to play mind games with the young soldier while trying to find out more about his life, and his past.
It’s a fantastic role for Taylor-Johnson with Liman’s camera trained on him for much of the film, creating the same kind of tension Liman brought to his earlier films, Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity.
Lrm got on the phone with Taylor-Johnson from the L.A. junket last week:

Actress Kristanna Loken has established herself as one to call when you need a tough woman who can kick ass, something she established in the 1999 TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, followed with playing the T-x in 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. After making a couple movies with the infamous Uwe Boll including Bloodrayne, Loken got the role to play Painkiller Jane in the 2007 Sci-Fi Channel show based on the comics.
While she seemingly hasn’t been as visible in recent years, she can now be seen in the crime-thriller Black Rose, a Russian-American collaborative film that’s finally hitting these shores. It’s directed by, and stars, Russian bodybuilder Alexander Nevsky as a Russian super-cop who is brought to L.A. to help solve the murders of a few Russian women there. He’s partnered with profiler Emily Smith (Loken) as they try to find clues to find the ruthless killer.

French-Canadian filmmaker Philippe Falardeau has actually been making movies for almost twenty years, but it wasn’t until about 2011 when he first started getting attention for his drama Monsieur Lazhar, which was nominated for a foreign language Oscar. Falardeau’s 2014 movie The Good Lie, didn’t get much notice despite starring Reese Witherspoon and being released by Warner Bros. Therefore, he hasn’t quite made the waves into Hollywood as his country-mates Denis Villeneuve or Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild).
Undaunted, Falardeau decided to take on the story of Bayonne, New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner, who famously went up against Ali at the height of his success in the ‘70s and managed to go 15 rounds before the fight was called due to Wepner’s famed “bleeding” during fights. Wepner was alternately known as “The Bayonne Brawler” and “The Bayonne Bleeder.”

Doug Liman continues to be an in-demand director after hits like Edge of Tomorrow and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In November 2015, Liman was named as the director on Channing Tatum’s anticipated Gambit movie, then it was pushed back for him to do The Wall, a smaller film that’s coming out this Friday, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena. (Liman also reunited with Tom Cruise for American Made coming out in late September, as well.)
Last August, it was reported that LIman had walked away from Gambit to focus on other movies. It definitely seems like Liman is well-qualified to take on a superhero movie, and he might still do so, having attached himself to DC Entertainment/Warner Bros’ Dark Universe aka Justice League Dark around the same time as leaving Gambit.

Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada's Painkiller Jane graphic novel series is getting a feature film adaptation, and it's locked down a stellar actress for its leading lady. Deadline reports that Jessica Chastain will play the title character.
Chastain, no stranger to playing tough female roles, will play Jane Vasko, a New York City street cop who gets recruited by the FBI to infiltrate a major NYC drug and human trafficking ring. In a near death experience, Jane develops exceptional regenerative abilities that give her a unique indestructible advantage. With nothing to live for and no way to die, Painkiller Jane becomes an unstoppable force of nature seeking revenge to those who destroyed her life as she leaves a path of death and destruction in her wake.

Jessica Chastain is one of the most in-demand actress working today, and has a slew of dramatic parts (including next year’s Woman Walks Ahead) in the works, but now we’re hearing that she’s also attached to star in and produce a big screen adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada’s comic series, Painkiller Jane. Chastain will play the lead role of Jane Vasko, a tough New York beat cop who develops incredible healing abilities.
Painkiller Jane was created back in the ’90s and although she’s never been a mainstream character, she has crossed over with the likes of The Punisher, Hellboy and Vampirella. There was also a short-lived Sci-Fi channel TV series based on Miss Vasko’s exploits in 2007 which starred Terminator 3 actress Kristanna Loken.
Here’s how Deadline describes this latest incarnation:

Coming close to death gave her the power to be unstoppable. New York City police officer Jane Vasko was nearly killed while undercover, but she bounced back as the vengeful Painkiller Jane in the comic book series of the same name. While a film adaptation has been in the works for quite some time, it now looks like Jessica Chastain will bring the lead role to life.
Deadline reports that Chastain is set to produce and play the starring role in Painkiller Jane. Producing the project alongside Chastain's Freckle Films will be Lotus Entertainment and Solipsist Films, with Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Ara Keshishian and Jimmy Palmiotti on board as executive producers (Palmiotti also co-wrote the comic book series with Joe Quesada).
Back in 2014, it was reported that Jen and Sylvia Soska (American Mary, See No Evil 2) were signed on to direct Painkiller Jane. Although Deadline did not include...
