Bob Barker was a pillar of television’s greatest generation.
Barker, the enduring host of “The Price Is Right” who died Aug. 26 at the age of 99, was a World War II veteran who trained as a Navy fighter pilot. But his destiny was not to fly missions in the Pacific theater. Barker’s service to his country came in the years after the war, when he and an elite corps of seasoned radio announcers laid a large part of the foundation for commercial television as we know it today.
Barker was a born broadcaster. He had a resonant voice, and his 6-foot-1 frame didn’t hurt in making an impression on viewers in the early days of grainy TV pictures. But his biggest asset was the gift of being to speak extemporaneously on live television – and make it look and feel natural while doing so.

Password is considered one of the greatest television game shows of all time — so great that it has been revived in different iterations on CBS, ABC and NBC over the past 60 years. The current reboot, hosted by Keke Palmer on NBC, is eligible this year for Emmy consideration in the outstanding game show and game show host categories — two honors that for the first time will be part of the Primetime Emmys instead of the Daytime Emmys.
Password first aired on CBS in 1961. The premise: two teams, each composed of one celebrity and one “civilian,” battle to be first to correctly guess a hidden word. Each team is given a single-word clue and works against the clock to guess the password and earn points toward a cash prize. Allen Ludden served as the show’s original emcee and hosted the ABC reboot from 1971 to 1975 — during which time Password won outstanding...

Betty White memorabilia brought in more than 4 million at a Beverly Hills auction this weekend — the auction had previously estimated raising about 400,000 to 600,000. Bidders attended online and in-person to purchase their choice of 16,000 iconic items from White’s life and career.
The Beverly Hills-based Julien’s Auctions noted that 5,600 bids were placed before the event officially started on Friday. By the end of the weekend, between 4,000 and 5,000 bidders placed more than 12,000 bids.
Golden Girls souvenirs proved (unsurprisingly) particularly popular at the event. White’s director’s chair from the NBC ’80s sitcom went for 76,800, and the pilot and finale scripts signed by the cast both sold for over 50,000.
Her wedding ring from the late actor, Allen Ludden, sold for 25,600, and a framed needlepoint of a tiger she made sold for 5,760. Art and furniture from her Brentwood home went for quite a lot more than auctioneers had expected.

The first teaser for NBC’s Password did this revival zero favors, edited as it was to make a game about the quiet, considered exchange of clues and guesses seem amped up, madcap and rife with Jimmy Fallon antics.
But having now screened multiple installments of the eight-episode summertime revival (which kicks off tonight at 10/9c, followed by a Wednesday-at-9 outing), I can report — with more than a bit of surprise, I admit — that the new Password is… not bad? And even a lot of fun at times.

Password is practically synonymous with Betty White, so it only makes sense for Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm to honor her legacy on the reboot's upcoming premiere. A sneak peek clip of Password's Aug. 9 episode shows Jimmy—set to be a contestant throughout Password's first season—kicking off the dedication off by commemorating both Betty and her late husband, who hosted the original game show from 1961 to 1980. "Obviously this is a legendary game, Password, and the great Allen Ludden, Betty White," Jimmy says. "Betty, this is for you." The Tonight Show host also recalls the time he and Jon did a sketch with Betty. Though the Mad Men actor...

With summer comes the onslaught of primetime game shows to fill the network void: some eternally fun, some cloyingly trite (Generation Gap) or reality-show contrived (Claim to Fame), and some too inexplicably silly for words. Words, happily, remain the focus of Password, a true classic with a long broadcast history on multiple networks, dating back to the genre’s 1960s heyday. Jimmy Fallon has been honoring the show with celebrity segments in late night on The Tonight Show for quite some time and now brings it to prime time in a high-energy weekly series. Tuesday’s premiere is dedicated to the late, great Betty White, who was the original show’s most celebrated player, not only because she married the host (Allen Ludden). Having played the verbal guessing game for years on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon now brings Password to primetime. He’ll appear as a celebrity partner to contestants in every episode. “Jimmy is our Betty White, although she is irreplaceable,” says host Keke Palmer. In fact, the revival’s premiere begins with a tribute to the late actress, who was married to original emcee Allen Ludden and a fan-favorite regular, before Fallon faces off with Mad Men’s Jon Hamm. This week’s special Wednesday at 9/8c episode features Fallon vs. Heidi Klum. Future stars include Martin Short and Chelsea Handler. Contestants can take home up to 25,000. “We want them to win the money, so they have a possible second chance with a bonus round if they choke the first time,” says Palmer, who watched the 1960s classic for research. “I try to bring that energy, something familiar and warm,...

Betty White's legacy lives on. Before she became a Golden Girls icon, the actress was a mainstay celebrity contestant on the classic game show Password, hosted by husband and host Allen Ludden. Now, the NBC revival—hosted by Keke Palmer and starring Jimmy Fallon—is remembering the Hollywood legend by dedicating the August 9 series premiere in her honor. "If it wasn't for Allen Ludden and Betty White, this show wouldn't have been a hit," Fallon exclusively told E! News' Daily Pop on August 3. "Betty White was the secret sauce." "She was just charming and funny and a little irreverent, but just perfectly, just on the...

Jon Hamm will be featured as the celebrity guest in the premiere of game show revival “Password,” NBC has announced.
Based on the original show, which ran from 1961 to 1975 (and has been revived in several forms since then), “Password” pits two teams compete against each other as they solve word puzzles using one-word clues. The team that solves for the password ultimately takes home 25,000. Each team consists of a contestant and a celebrity player, with executive producer Jimmy Fallon leading one team and a rotating guest leading the other. The series premiere will see Fallon compete against Hamm in an episode dedicated to Betty White, a frequent player on the original “Password” and the wife of the show’s original host Allen Ludden.
In addition to Hamm, Yvette Nicole Brown, Tony Hale, Chelsea Handler, Heidi Klum, Joel McHale, Chrissy Metz, Martin Short, J.B. Smoove and Meghan Trainor have been confirmed...

“My preoccupation with animals is an open secret,” wrote Betty White in her 2011 book “Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo.” The legendary star, who died this week at age 99, was known for more than just her TV and film work. She was a self proclaimed “zoo nut” who spent her life advocating for animal welfare.
White’s parents were animal lovers and she grew up going to zoos regularly. As her profile as an actor and TV personality grew, it became natural for her to use her platform to spotlight that passion.
In 1971, White created and hosted “The Pet Set,” a syndicated series that featured White interviewing celebrity guests including Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Burnett and Doris Day, and their pets and animal trainer Ralph Helfer. She produced the series herself along with her husband, longtime “Password” host Allen Ludden. “The Pet Set” ran for 39 half-hour episodes, and was...

I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.

Today is Betty White’s 99th birthday. She’s forgotten more about television than most of us will ever know, and the evidence of that came in the outpouring of well-wishes that dotted social media from celebrities and fans. To put the cherry on the cake, White’s long-unseen series, Pet Set, created by and starring the television icon, will make its debut on digital platforms and DVD on February 23. The star-studded 39 half-hours feature fellow animal-loving icons, including Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Doris Day, Burt Reynolds, Jimmy Stewart, Shirley Jones, James Brolin, and dozens more. The showed aired in syndication from 1971-1972 and was produced by White and her husband, Allen Ludden. It was canceled when its main sponsor, the Carnation Company, decided to direct its advertising budget exclusively to commercials rather than programming. The talk show had four segments. White would bring out a guest star to showcase their pets,...

Betty White, commonly referred to as “The First Lady of Television,” celebrates her 99th birthday on Sunday, January 17. The five-time Emmy winner for Primetime roles has been a mainstay on television screens for longer than even the medium itself. Her more than 80-year career on the small screen remains the longest of any performer in the history of TV.
White began appearing in television while it was still in its infancy, appearing on an experimental program in 1939. After years of working in radio, she served as co-host of “Hollywood on Television” in 1949, a gig that required White to ad lib for most of the show’s five-hour running time. Her first series was 1953’s “Life with Elizabeth,” which earned White a regional Emmy Award.

White’s greatest success came during seventies and eighties with the actress starring on not one, but two classic sitcoms.

Betty White turns 99 today, a life milestone that few people ever reach, let alone performers who are still in the public eye.
In September, White reflected on her 70 years in television in an interview with Variety.
She knew the medium was here to stay when she saw the impact of her first TV series, “Hollywood on Television.” In the early 1950s, she spent five hours a day on live TV, talking about the day’s headlines, interviewing guests, spinning records and doing commercials alongside popular L.A. deejay Al Jarvis.
“I think once people got used to entertainment coming right into their living rooms…Well, there we were, and we weren’t going anywhere,” White observed.
Earlier this month, White offered her observations on living nearly a century in an interview with People magazine.
“I am blessed with good health, so turning 99 is no different than turning 98,” White said. Another...

Forget drive-by birthday celebrations and virtual parties with friends - Betty White has better plans for her upcoming birthday. Betty's 99th birthday is on Jan. 17, and the Golden Girls icon has some quality plans in mind. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Betty cut right to the chase. "You probably didn't ask, but I'll tell you anyway. What am I doing for my birthday? Running a mile each morning has been curtailed by Covid, so I am working on getting The Pet Set rereleased, and feeding the two ducks who come to visit me every day."
It's definitely a low-key birthday, but it's one that would make Tony Soprano and his first-season obsession with the ducks that visited him very proud. As for the details about The Pet Set, the 1970s show was produced by Betty's late husband Allen Ludden and hosted by Betty herself as she highlighted celebrities and their various pets.

Can you believe the Golden Girls finale aired 26 years ago today? We can't! In honor of our favorite show's anniversary, we're reminiscing about our favorite Golden Girls secrets and sweet behind-the-scenes cast moments. During a recent interview, Betty White dished that she and her late co-stars — Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Bea Arthur — not only swapped gossip while on-set but also ended up helping each other through both tears and tragedies during the series' seven seasons. "We adored each other," Betty, now 96, once said. "It was such a special experience. Between scenes, instead of going to our dressing rooms, we'd sit there and yak about very intimate things." Tragedy first struck in the show's first season when both Bea and Betty's mothers passed away. It was a mutual loss that bonded the two for years to come. "My father had died a number of years before I did Maude, so [my mom] was living independently,...

Betty White has fit a whole lot of life into her 95 years, and she's still going strong. The star is a Hollywood icon, with roles in The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore Show among her most popular. But of all her successes, the actress credits her marriage to Allen Ludden as her favorite. Betty, who was previously married to Us Army pilot Dick Barker in 1945 and Hollywood agent Lane Allen from 1947 until 1949, met her third husband when she appeared as a guest on his game show, Password, in 1961. Ludden actually proposed to Betty twice before she finally accepted and the two were married in 1963. Ludden tragically passed away from stomach cancer in 1981 (Betty was 59 years old at the time), and she has never remarried. When asked if she would ever consider tying the knot again during an interview with Larry King, Betty said, "Once you've had the best,...
