2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the events of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 20th anniversary of the release of the remake, and also the tenth anniversary of an entry in the franchise that has less fans than those two just mentioned: Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here). Recently, our friends at Bloody Disgusting sat down for an interview with one of the film’s writers, Adam Marcus, and during their chat Marcus revealed that the movie lost its cannibalism due to the box office failure of The Midnight Meat Train and lost a couple massacres due to the lower-than-expected budget.
Directed by John Luessenhop and sporting a story credited to Stephen Susco, Adam Marcus, and Debra Sullivan, and a screenplay by Marcus, Sullivan, and Kirsten Elms, Texas Chainsaw 3D has the following synopsis: Decades ago, residents of Newt, Texas, long suspected that the Sawyer family was responsible for the disappearances of many people.

Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.
The second installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Texas Chainsaw, the 2013 direct sequel to 1974’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, including glimpses at how the original screenplay differs from the final movie.
“When you see the line ‘Do your thing, cuz’ and people are angry at you for writing it, and you didn’t write it, you just start getting really frustrated about the state of modern filmmaking and the voice that filmmakers have,” Marcus confesses.
The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco wrote the first draft, but as Marcus tells it, “Lionsgate did not want his script because it was about cannibals.

As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.
The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

About a year and a half ago, Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here) star Alexandra Daddario gave an interview where she had some interesting things to say about her time working on the film (which just celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month). Daddario revealed that she had tried to get the “Do you thing, cuz!” line cut, and that she is very grateful to have been in the movie. Not just because she was having trouble getting work at the time, but also because there were severe issues to overcome during the production and it taught her “what happens when things go wrong, what happens when things go right, why did they go wrong, why shouldn’t they have happened, how does the studio get involved when something goes wrong, how studios interact with projects.” Now, during a new interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Daddario seems to have...

Leatherface is coming back to cinemas again. Again.
Adding to eight already-existing films in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise will be a new film from Legendary Entertainment and producer Fede Álvarez. The Uruguayan director last brought the sleeper hit chamber thriller “Don’t Breathe” to the big screen in 2016. In 2013, Álvarez rebooted “Evil Dead,” based on Sam Raimi’s franchise.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Álvarez will produce the latest version of the Tobe Hooper horror movie universe, with no director or writer attached yet. It seems that Legendary is also looking to take a page from David Gordon Green’s 2018 “Halloween” restart, and Tim Miller’s upcoming “Terminator: Dark Fate.” While the former film was a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s original, Miller’s “Terminator” take is a direct sequel to James Cameron’s “Judgment Day.”

"I don't owe anybody, anything." Saban Films has debuted a new official trailer for an action crime drama titled Speed Kills, based on a book by Arthur J. Harris. This oddly premiered as a Vr Experience, a feature film presented entirely as a Vr feature, and it won the top award at a film festival earlier this year. John Travolta stars in this action-packed true story of an ‘80s speedboat champion and multimillionaire caught between the mob and the law. The impressive full cast includes Katheryn Winnick, Matthew Modine, James Remar, Kellan Lutz, Jennifer Esposito, Tom Sizemore, Jordi Molla, Michael Weston, Moran Atias, and Amaury Nolasco. By now we all know that Travolta isn't really making any good films anymore, and this looks to be staying true to that. I'm glad they're not trying to still push the Vr experience. ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ actress Marilyn Burns dead at 64 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre actress Marilyn Burns, the one cast member who manages to survive Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s low-budget 1974 horror cult classic, was found dead on Tuesday, August 4, 2014, at her home in the Houston area. According to her manager, "she was found unresponsive by a family member." The cause of death remains unclear. Burns (born on July 5, 1950, in Erie, Pennsylvania) was 64. The Houston-raised Marilyn Burns began appearing in films in the early ’70s. She had a bit part in Robert Altman’s Houston-filmed Brewster McCloud (1970), starring Bud Cort, Sally Kellerman, and Shelley Duvall, and was later cast in a supporting role in Sidney Lumet’s Austin-shot 1974 drama Lovin’ Molly; however, Burns was ultimately replaced by Susan Sarandon, reportedly remaining in the production as a stand-in for both Sarandon and Blythe Danner. Also in 1974, Marilyn Burns landed the...

Paul Walker movies: Few worthwhile efforts away from the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise (photo: Paul Walker in ‘Hours’) (See previous post: “Paul Walker Dead: Fast and Furious Actor Killed in Fiery Car Crash.”) Aside from the Fast and Furious franchise, Paul Walker was featured in about 15 movies since the turn of the century; most of those were little-seen releases that did nothing to expand his following beyond fans of slick, high-speed shenanigans, e.g., John Glenn’s thriller and straight-to-dvd release The Lazarus Project (2008), co-starring Piper Perabo; Wayne Kramer’s box office bomb Running Scared, with Vera Farmiga; John Stockwell’s mix of deep-sea adventure and crime thriller Into the Blue, with Jessica Alba and Josh Brolin; and another straight-to-dvd effort, Mukunda Michael Dewil’s poorly received thriller Vehicle 19 (2013). Dear God help us all: The cinematic geniuses who collectively coughed up “Texas Chainsaw 3D” are presently hard at work on yet another “Day of the Dead” remake. This time around, the re-telling of George A. Romero’s zombie picture will be tackled by none other than “House at the End of the Street” director Mark Tonderai. Why do we need another remake of “Day of the Dead”? I’m guessing it’s because director John Luessenhop’s “Texas Chainsaw 3D” made some scratch at the box office earlier this year. And everyone knows that the boys and girls in Hollywood absolutely adore cash. Any kind of cash. If the moviegoers were willing to pay good money to see someone defecate inside a plastic bag for 90 minutes, we’d get a trilogy. In 3D. The latest remake reportedly takes place after the zombie apocalypse has destroyed most of the planet.

Breaking Bad is over and what a finale it was, although it may have been predictable based on what we knew from the flash forward at the start of the season, it still didn’t disappoint and was full of stirring and thrilling moments. More importantly, now that this is over, Netflix crucially need to up their game.
Hansel and Gretel and Texas Chainsaw, two pretty dire entries from earlier this year, just are not going to cut it against Argo and The Perks of Being a Wallflower regardless of who did what at the box office. Netflix seem to have the monopoly on quality catalogue titles this week with some little seen gems with Permanent Midnight and Orange County but this means nothing to the public and mostly registers with nerds like me.

★★☆☆☆ Picking up where Tobe Hooper's classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) left off, John Luessenhop revs up Texas Chainsaw (2013) with some fresh young flesh and, for the loyalists, special guest appearances from four beloved cast members from previous instalments - including the original Leatherface himself. In the aftermath of the original's bloodless slayings, a group of angry vigilantes take action against the evil Sawyer family when a terrorised young woman escapes from their house. Word of other murders soon spreads through the town and the Sawyer family home is burnt to the ground by outraged locals.
Decades later, a young woman named Heather (Alexandra Daddario) discovers that she has inherited a luxurious Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. She's reluctant to uncover her roots but with the support of her boyfriend Ryan (Trey Songz) and friends Nikki (Tanya Raymonde) and Kenny (Keram Malicki-Sanchez) she sets off on a deadly road trip.

The birth of the modern horror movie can arguably be traced back to a handful of films, notably (but not exclusively) George A Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968), John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left (1972) and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). All of them have been remade in recent years, though unsurprisingly none of them came anywhere close to surpassing or even equalling the originals, so rather than choose to reboot the franchise for the second time in a decade, director John Luessenhop has gone down a different route and the result is interesting to say the least.
Picking up exactly where the original movie finished some thirty seven years earlier, Texas Chainsaw is a direct sequel to Hooper’s 1974 classic and opens with the aftermath of the titular massacre and the consequences for the Sawyer family of having allowed...

Every horror franchise has at least one black sheep in its series of films, and it's safe to say the Texas Chainsaw Massacre family just found a new source of shame to hide away in its basement and pretend doesn't exist. The recent string of reboots for classic horror franchises like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and now Texas Chainsaw Massacre have all been disappointing, but Director John Luessenhop's Texas Chainsaw 3D takes the cake as the most incomprehensible and horribly written of the lot. Besides an interesting look into the start of Leatherface's origins, Texas Chainsaw 3D offers nothing to the ailing franchise but horrible one-liners, nonsensical storytelling, and boring slasher kills.

Imagine, if you will, a world where The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation never happened. We won't even mention the remake and its sequel since they're not part of the original canon. The slate of what many consider inadequate follow-ups to the original is wiped completely clean. This scenario is exactly what Texas Chainsaw asks of its audience.
Picking up immediately after the original 1974 film ended, Texas Chainsaw takes audiences back to the Sawyer homestead. Shortly after the police show up to arrest Leatherface (Dan Yeager), an unruly mob decides to take the law into their own hands. They burn down and kill all the family holed up in the house, with the exception of Leatherface and a woman protecting a baby. One of the townspeople kills the woman and takes the baby to raise on their own.

Film: "Texas Chainsaw 3D"; Cast: Alexandra Daddario, Dan Yeager, Trey Songz, Scott Eastwood, Tania Raymonde, Shaun Sipos, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, James MacDonald, Thom Barry, Paul Rae, and Marilyn Burns; Director: John Luessenhop; Rating: **
The two stars that "Texas Chainsaw 3D" gets is because everything is relative. Given the genre, the look and feel of the film, it deserves this and nothing less.
The prologue establishes that the current saga is directly linked to the 1974 released Tobe Hooper's original "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". The latest one in the franchise, picks up right where the "...Massacre" left off, with a fair-minded sheriff (Thom Barry) arriving at a farmhouse to arrest a member of the cannibalistic.

Love it or hate it, Texas Chainsaw 3D made an impact on genre fans. That being said, the one thing nearly everyone can agree upon is the fact that for a majority of the movie Leatherface's mask is easily the worst of the franchise. Get ready for a peek at what could have been.

I have a confession. Despite living in Texas, I've never been a big fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. I actually didn't see the original film until I was 25 years old, which shocked most of my friends considering what a horror buff I am. But it just wasn't a staple in my household. (My mom and I were both Jason fans to the core.)
I'm also not as venomously anti-remake as most of my friends. Do I wish Hollywood would get new material and invest even a fraction of those monumental budgets into indie films and original ideas? Absolutely. But from a marketing perspective, it's easy to see why they don't; these franchises are guaranteed cash in the bank, and many younger audiences aren't even familiar with the originals.

Apparently chatter about Texas Chainsaw 4, a misspelled title and misreported sequel, was premature.
Executive Producer Mark Burg: “Millennium simply sold the foreign rights and they will not tell us when a sequel is ready to be made. The script was developed by Carl, myself and writer/director John Luessenhop. Millennium and about ten producers came aboard only when we needed their check. Maybe they’re looking for something to sell at Berlin, but they have no right to announce this sequel and if we make another it has to be as good or better than this one and that takes time.“
There’s a lot of parties involved which muddies the situation, but clearly, it’s box office success will trump any problems, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing a green light on a sequel soon, especially since this rumor has caused quite the stir.

Yesterday came word from producer Avi Lerner that his Millennium Films was officially moving ahead with a follow-up to last week's box-office topper "Texas Chainsaw 3D".
It was suggested shooting would begin later this year in Louisiana. Now, producer Carl Mazzacone and executive producer Mark Burg have said that there's no progress and Lerner was flat out wrong.
Burg says: "Millennium simply sold the foreign rights and they will not tell us when a sequel is ready to be made. The script was developed by Carl, myself and writer/director John Luessenhop. Yes, you should look worried, bloody Texas-based lady, because there's a big 'ole hoedown taking place over the next in the Texas Chainsaw franchise. Despite being one-star terrible, the latest splat-acular, Texas Chainsaw 3D, delivered a whopping $21.7m opening weekend and soared past heavyweight contenders Les Misérables and Django Unchained. Millennium Films' Avi Lerner has since claimed that number eight is already underway and will shoot in Louisiana later this year.'Oh. No. It. Isn't!', retort the folk at Main Line Pictures in their best panto voices."The rights are controlled by Carl (Mazzocone) and Main Line Pictures, no matter what Millennium says,” Main Line's Mark Burg told Deadline Hollywood. “Millennium simply sold the foreign rights and they will not tell us when a sequel is ready to be made. Texas Chainsaw 3D is a strange animal. Everything about the flick is wonky and weird, and we guess in some way that's kind of appropriate. In any event don't get too revved up about a sequel yet, kids, as there's more to the saw. No idea what that "more to the saw" means, but it sounded cool.
Yesterday Deadline announced that Texas Chainsaw 4 was on the way, which is befuddling in and of itself as there are several sequels, one remake, and one prequel already; however Texas Chainsaw 3D was said to be a direct sequel to the original, really making it Texas Chainsaw 2 so a sequel to that would have been Texas Chainsaw 3 and not Texas Chainsaw 4, but we must remember that this new series is also home to a 40-year-old character portrayed by a 26-year-old hottie. Exclusive: What could Avi have been thinking? Last night, after a long day and fueled by quotes from Millennium Films chief Avi Lerner, I broke a story that another Texas Chainsaw Massacre film would move forward later this year in Louisiana. I learned today from the rights holders, producer Carl Mazzocone and executive producer Mark Burg, that the green light wasn’t Avi’s to give and they were surprised because no progress on this sequel has yet been made. After the seventh film in the splatter series surprised everyone by beating films like The Hobbit, Django Unchained and Les Miserables to win the weekend box office with a $21.7 million gross, you know a sequel is inevitable. But according to Mazzocone, its timing is his to dictate, and he and Burg say nothing will happen until they work out the creative beats with domestic distributor Lionsgate. “The rights are controlled...

You can’t stop a dude with a chainsaw. Or at least, no one at the box office could, with Millennium Films’ “Texas Chainsaw 3D” beating out both Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” over the weekend. The horror sequel beat out the Jamie Foxx-starring bloody Western by the skin of its teeth — but beat it out it did. That was way more than most people had expected, which automatically translates to … you guessed it! Get ready for “Texas Chainsaw 4″. In fact, Millennium Films is so buoyed by “Texas Chainsaw 3D’s” success that they are already planning to shoot the fourth movie later this year in Louisiana. (Louisiana standing in for Texas, I assume, given the, you know, title and all.) John Luessenhop directed the third movie, and it’s not clear if he’ll also return. “Texas Chainsaw 3D” (minus the “Massacre”) was made on the cheap,...

'Texas Chainsaw 3D' exploded into theatres earlier this month securing the number one spot and giving Millennium Films a sudden brainwave. 'Let's do a sequel!' The company are already laying down plans for a sequel to revive the franchise even further than just this year's John Luessenhop helmed hit. The next sequel is currently titled as 'Texas Chainsaw 4' which doesn't make much sense in spite of all the past sequels and remakes. So its unclear at this stage just where the action will fit between amongst the franchise. But anyway its due to shoot later on this year in Louisiana and producer Carl Mazzocone will be hoping to net Lionsgate once again to distribute....

In an announcement that surprised no one given Texas Chainsaw 3D's number one spot at the box office last weekend, Millennium Films is moving ahead with Texas Chainsaw 4, and production will begin later this year in Louisiana.
Per Deadline, the next installment will be spearheaded by producer Carl Mazzocone, executive producers Mark Burg, Avi Lerner, Tobe Hooper, Trevor Short, John Thompson, Danny Dimbort, Lati Grobman, and Christa Campbell. Considering TC3D took in a surprisingly high $21.7 million gross and a per screen average of $8,193 on 2,654 screens, Millennium is smart to strike while the iron is hot.
“Lati and Christa brought the idea of this franchise to us. They were certain of the audience appeal so we signed on,” Millennium Films Chairman Avi Lerner said, “and it turns out they were right. It was a bloody good decision. Lionsgate agreed to distribute the film in the Us and did a fantastic job.

Following a strong opening weekend for Texas Chainsaw 3D, Millennium Films has made plans to develop another sequel, Texas Chainsaw 4. Deadline says the project will shoot later this year in Louisiana.
Texas Chainsaw 3D, which hit theaters January 4, continues the story of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original. Directed by John Luessenhop, the film has already grossed more than $22 million.
The title Texas Chainsaw 4 is a bit perplexing, however, as the project would represent the eighth film in the overall franchise and, theoretically, only the third film to follow the "continuity" of Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Number one at the box office but surely less than so in our hearts, Texas Chainsaw 3D's $21 million opening weekend proved a success for distributor Lionsgate and director John Luessenhop. As a horror franchise entry, Texas Chainsaw 3D is middle of the road fun, strictly for the already converted fanbase. It's both an homage fest and an opportunity for something new, and the final act takes some chances that I didn't see coming. As is often the case with these mainstream scare flicks, the cast is compromised of young, good-looking up-and-comers hoping to gain some exposure for better A-list projects in the future. Less reported on is the exposure it provides for co-star...
