The members of Abba had a rare reunion Friday to receive one of Sweden’s highest honors at the royal palace in Stockholm.
Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were given the Royal Vasa Order by King Carl XVI Gustaf. The group was awarded the honor for their “very distinguished contributions within Swedish and international music life.”
The Royal Vasa Order is a knighthood given in recognition of personal efforts for Sweden, as well as the successful performance of public duties and assignments, the Associated Press writes. They are the first Swedish citizens in nearly 50 years to receive the honor.
The four members of Abba have not performed live together since 1982, and have only made a handful of appearances together over the ensuing decades. They most recently came together in 2022 at their avatar show Abba: Voyage in London. They used that occasion to to record 2021’s Voyage,...

Abba fans the world over yesterday celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Swedish supergroup’s Eurovision victory in 1974, and one crowd were treated to a surprise appearance by band member Bjorn Ulvaeus.
It was the group’s Eurovision triumph 50 years ago with their song Waterloo that kickstarted their phenomenal success, an event marked by Abba fans all across the world on Saturday with special events. The BBC, who hosted the event back in 1974 when it all began, gave over their BBC Two Channel to “Abba Night”, including a new documentary charting the band’s fortunes over the last five decades.
On stage in London, the cast celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Mamma Mia! musical, and then had one more treat for the audience – with the appearance of Bjorn Ulvaeus – one quarter of Abba, and one half of the band’s songwriting duo (along with Benny Andersson).

Patti LuPone — the Tony-winning, brassy Broadway legend with a penchant for strong opinions — let everyone know exactly how she feels about Abba and their hit “Mamma Mia!” musical in a new joint interview with Nathan Lane on Wednesdsay.
To hear her tell it on “The A24 Podcast,” LuPone has never even seen “Mamma Mia!” on stage or on film out of protest against the Swedish pop supergroup of 1970s fame.
“I’ve never seen ‘Mamma Mia!’ I’ve never seen any of the movies. Every time their music’s on, I turn it off,” LuPone said, detailing her hatred for the band. “I protest them.”
“How can you hate Abba?” Nathan Lane asked, shocked.
Turns out, it has to do with LuPone love of rock ‘n’ roll from the same era. The pop-dance stylings of members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad just never sat right with her.

Abba’s long-time guitarist Lasse Wellander has died aged 70.
The news was announced by the Swedish musician’s family, who told Wellander’s fans that he had died on Good Friday (7 April) “surrounded by his loved ones”.
“It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep,” their statement read, adding: “You were an amazing musician and humble as few, but above all you were a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather.
“Kind, safe, caring and loving... and so much more, that cannot be described in words. A hub in our lives, and it’s unbelievable that we now have to live on without you.”
The musician died of cancer.
In tribute, Abba released a statement to Pa, reading: “Lasse was a dear friend, a fun guy and a superb guitarist. The importance of his creative input in the recording studio as...

If you’re ever looking for advice on how to “send the ladies crazy,” there’s no one better to ask than a former sex symbol like Robert Plant. According to the Led Zeppelin frontman, it’s all about having the right playlist.
Robert Plant claims song with snappy rhythm is best during sex
While talking with Rolling Stone in 2005, Robert Plant was asked the classic interview question: “If you were stuck in the desert, what CD would you bring?” This, of course, led to the interviewer asking what the best “desert music to have sex to” is, and Plant’s response didn’t disappoint.
“I don’t think I could do it. I mean, I can do it and without a tablet! But perhaps a little Rachid Taha with Steve Hillage — those rhythms alone would be very interesting. Those counts in five and six could send the ladies crazy!

Abba Voyage show will soon travel “around the world”, organisers have reportedly said.
The virtual concert, which sees hologram- style “Abba-tars” of the pop band performing a full setlist in a purpose-built arena, has seen enormous demand.
The unique concert, which opened last May, has sold over a million tickets.
Following its success, Universal Music Group has reportedly said that the show will soon go on tour around the world.
“Plans are now in development to take ‘Abba Voyage’ around the world,” said Universal Music Group chairman Lucian Grainge while on a company earnings call, reported Variety.
A representative for Abba Voyage declined to comment, but a source close to the project said that the focus was on London for the forseeable.

Abba staged their first concert in 42 years in hologram form at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (grab tickets to upcoming shows here) last May, and now the Swedish pop legends are ready to take the show worldwide.
During a Universal Music Group earnings call on Thursday (via Variety), chairman Lucian Grainge said, “Plans are now in development to take ‘Abba Voyage’ around the world.” No further details have been revealed at this time.
For now, the only place to catch “Abba Voyage” is at the custom-built, 3,000-capacity Abba Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. In order to create the production, George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic used motion-capture technology to create digital avatars (or “Abba-tars”) of how Agnetha Falkstog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad looked in 1979. The 90-minute concert spans from Abba’s classic 1970s catalog to 2021’s Voyage, their first release in 40 years.

Music group Abba isn’t weirded out by their de-aged “Abbatars” that appear during their immersive Voyage performances. They like that their artificial intelligence depicts their younger selves.

According to the BBC, all four original members of Abba, Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, reunited as early as 2016 to start work on a multimedia project.
The Eurovision winners planned a “new entertainment experience” that would be immersive and involve virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The group would appear on stage as Abbatars or A.I. versions of their younger selves.
They hoped the experience would bring their music to a new generation of fans “in a way previously unimagined,” a press release said. Then, in 2018, they announced they added new songs to the project (per the Guardian). These were the first...

Trafalgar, Warner Bros. To Release Remastered ‘Abba: The Movie’ Concert Film In May For Group’s 50th
Trafalgar Releasing and Warner Bros. will present a digitally remastered Abba: The Movie for two nights in May to celebrate the Swedish pop sensation’s 50th anniversary.
The film was shot by director Lasse Hallström during the group’s hugely successful 1977 Australian tour and first released that year. Abba: The Movie – Fan Event will take attendees on a flashback journey to the 1970s when disco reigned supreme, and Abba were international pop royalty,” the announcement said. The screenings will run on May 12 and 14 at 450 theaters across the U.S. and Canada.
The film stars the members of Abba, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Agnetha Fältskog and is a rare look at the group during the height of their popularity including backstage footage as well as full-length performances of some of Abba’s greatest hits including “Dancing Queen” and “Name Of The Game”.

When the 2022 Grammy nominations were announced late last month, many people were surprised to see Abba’s first song in nearly 40 years, “I Still Have Faith in You,” as a nominee for Record of the Year.
They shouldn’t have been: Abba are one of the most popular, influential and successful groups in the history of the world. While often dismissed as a kitschy pop act during their 1970s-early ‘80s heyday, their image and at-times goofy lyrics camouflaged their indelible, deceptively sophisticated and complex songwriting and arrangements. Yet their reputation and respect grew exponentially in the years after they announced a hiatus in 1983, as their music proved deeply enduring and the world caught up with its sophistication, particularly via strategic placements in film and TV, especially the 1994 film “Muriel’s Wedding” and the Abba-themed “Mamma Mia!” musical and film.

It finally happened: Abba announced they’re reuniting for the first time in 40 years, with a new album and a digital concert on the way. If the pair of singles they’ve released prove anything, it’s that they’ve been bottling up disco-pop lightning for years. They picked the perfect time, too: We could all use some of that glittery Swedish energy to get us through the darkness right now.
In honor of the group returning, let’s revisit their breakthrough at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, where they took home first place for “Waterloo.

Abba will have five new songs on the market in 2021, and has pushed back their plans to do a holographic tour to support the music because of the pandemic.
The Swedish group – Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus – were originally planning to release only two songs for their comeback. But the long process between the original announcement in 2018 and now has allowed them time to do more than planned. It will be the first new Abba music in 35 years.
Titles include I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down.
In a statement announcing the new songs, Abba said, “The decision to go ahead with the exciting Abba avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence. We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio.”
For the tour, Abba will appear as their younger selves.

A Mamma Mia 3, could be in the cards down the road.

Craymer said that she intended to develop the musical during the Covid-19 shutdown.

There was no harder-working rock star in the 1980s than Phil Collins. His solo career exploded in January of 1981 with the release of his debut single “In the Air Tonight,” the first of many massive hits he’d score throughout the decade. The group had formed in 1972, with its name consisting of the first letter of each member's name: Anni-Frid Lyngstad, now 72; Benny Andersson, 71; Bjorn Ulvaeus, 73; and Agnetha Faltskog, 68. The quartet's big breakthrough came in 1974 when it won the Eurovision Song Contest.

After decades of fans saying “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” the original Abba is reuniting for a TV special, and now NBC has a title and premiere date for it. The Peacock said today that it will air Abba: Thank You for the Music, An All-Star Tribute will in December.
The Swedish pop juggernaut’s two-hour special will feature Agnetha Faltskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad performing their brand-new song “I Still Have Faith In You” — with a twist. It will be “sung” by a virtual Abba: digital representation of the band in 1979 but voiced and recorded by the band members today.
The special — which will be broadcast around the world, with BBC Worldwide handle international distribution — also will feature “specially invited artists” playing Abba classics including “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” The Winner Takes It All” and “Take a Chance on Me.”

Even though Abba’s unexpected announcement last week that the legendary quartet had reformed to record two songs had no mention of a tour beyond the virtual one scheduled for next year, rumors and anticipation for one began to build.
Yet any hopes that the group — Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus, three-fourths of whom are in their 70s — would mount its first tour since 1979 were dashed by their rep on Monday.
“No — definitely not,” said Gorel Hanser, the group’s manager and spokesperson, told the U.K.’s Mirror. “We should remember them how they were in the 1970s, and listen to how they sing today.”
One of the new songs will be unveiled in a forthcoming two-hour BBC documentary in December, followed by a tour featuring holograms of the group — dubbed ABBAtars.
Gorel added that the quartet had been “happily surprised” by the reaction to their announcement of new songs.

Mamma Mia… Abba is reuniting and the Swedish pop group has set a TV special to air on NBC in the U.S. and BBC in the UK.
The band, which formed in 1972 and broke up in 1982 after eight studio albums, will debut two new songs including “I Still Have Faith In You,” which will be released in December.
The band – Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – had previously reunited for a one-off private party in 2016. The TV special will be produced by Simon Fuller’s Xix Entertainment and air in December.

The members of the legendary Swedish pop group Abba, who have teased fans with talk of a reunion for years, have finally, truly done it — if by "it" you mean appearing together at the opening of a Mamma Mia!-themed entertainment venture in Stockholm. Group members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (see where "Abba" comes from?) appeared together for the first time since 2008 to celebrate the opening of Mamma Mia! The Party, a Greek tavern-themed venue where there will be performances of Mamma Mia!, the broadway show and now feature film with Meryl Streep. The Guardian reports that the group, originally composed of two couples which both divorced shortly before the group split up in 1982, declined to take a photo together on the red carpet, but did pose for individual pictures. According to The Independent, fans paid 1,340 kronor (roughly £110 or $155) to attend the event, which is...

Swedish group Abba is one of the biggest selling music acts in history, and even though they haven’t recorded together in over thirty years, their music still thrives, thanks to a continued presence in pop culture (including a Broadway show and film devoted to their music).
On a personal level, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida) were the Bizarro World version of Fleetwood Mac, as they experienced the unraveling of the Agnetha/Bjorn and Benny/Frida marriages during the group’s peak.
Bjorn and Benny were the music masterminds, but it was the presence of Frida and Agnetha that gave Abba their signature look and sound. Today is Agnetha’s 64th birthday, so let’s count down their greatest songs … not just the biggest hits, but some underrated gems, and a few solo songs from the ladies.

Los Angeles — For most of the last three decades, Abba was but a memory for Agnetha Faltskog. She made concerted efforts to leave behind her past as one of two principal singers of the best-selling 1970s Swedish quartet, best known for the pop classic "Dancing Queen."
"There was several years after I had stopped with the group that I couldn't listen to the music," Faltskog said.
Once the group stopped recording in 1982, and her post-Abba solo career slowed to a crawl, she happily stepped out of the limelight and settled into domestic life on a small Swedish island near Stockholm. She did just a handful of interviews, wrote an autobiography, only made a few Abba-related appearances and was so reclusive, she developed a reputation as being the new Greta Garbo.

They were on board a jet that once belonged to billionaire aviator Howard Hughes and it was running out of fuel on its way to Boston from New York.

Stockholm — You can thank Abba for the music. And so much more.
A museum devoted to the pop superstars opening in Stockholm on Tuesday will celebrate the band's long list of hits. But it will also show off paraphernalia, including the helicopter featured on the cover of its "Arrival" album, a star-shaped guitar and dozens of glitzy costumes the Swedish band wore at the height of its 1970s fame.
Some gear is definitely not on show. With a smirk on his face, band member Bjorn Ulvaeus says certain items are "mysteriously ... forever lost," conceding only that among them are "embarrassing" tight costumes he wore when he was "slightly overweight." He declined to say more on the matter.
