You have to admit, even the promise of it is fascinating: what does a photoreal-animated Lion King film look like when it comes from Barry Jenkins – the director of Moonlight, and If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Underground Railroad? We’re about to find out, because Jenkins is directing Mufasa: The Lion King, the follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 The Lion King remake – ostensibly a prequel about the rise of Simba’s legendary dad, but also weaving in sequel threads following Simba and Nala’s burgeoning family. And it’s not that Jenkins is being parachuted in – he’s working with his regular cinematographer James Laxton, and editor Joi McMillon, bringing his impeccable craft to an entirely different type of filmmaking, with the biggest tools blockbusterdom can bring. Check out the trailer here:

South Africa’s Known Associates, the fast-growing parent company of Johannesburg-based Known Associates Entertainment (Kae) and Cape Town-based Moonlighting Films, is launching into unscripted programming, Variety can reveal.
The company has acquired a 60% stake in Zero Gravity, a production outfit founded in 2017 by former Endemol Shine Africa and Trace Studios CEO Sivan Pillay, and will team up with South African media giant Primedia to “relaunch multiple new high-end unscripted formats,” according to Pillay. Though specific titles covered by that agreement have not been finalized, Primedia’s catalog includes hit series “The Masked Singer,” “Deal or No Deal” and “Ready Steady Cook.”
“For us, it’s a natural progression,” said Known Associates chairperson Joel Phiri at the Joburg Film Festival. “We’re bringing our production expertise, and it’s keeping in line with our acquiring [production services giant] Moonlighting [in 2022]. It took the combined talents of four Grammy winners, a symphony orchestra and a choir of African-American opera singers to make “The Woman King” resonate with the sounds of 19th-century West Africa.
“This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime films,” says composer Terence Blanchard of director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s project, for which he wrote a powerful score – the likes of which haven’t been heard in a period African film since Quincy Jones’ “Roots” 45 years ago.
“All of your experiences lead you to this moment, to work on something like this,” says the two-time Oscar nominee and five-time Grammy winner. “As soon as I saw it, I was floored. I looked at these characters as the founding DNA of all the strong African-American women I experienced growing up.”

Three years ago, when Disney announced a remake of its animated classic The Lion King, it was easy to be skeptical: With the original still so beloved, was an upgrade even necessary? But at least one family in South Africa was hopeful. In both the first movie and a later stage production, The Lion King features “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” a Sixties pop hit that has its roots in “Mbube,” a song written and recorded in the Thirties by South African singer and migrant worker Solomon Linda. One of the most iconic musical moments in cinematic history was a spur-of-the-moment freestyle, recorded for a demo for a movie that many thought would be overshadowed by a beautiful cartoon from Disney: Pocahontas. In 1994, though, The Lion King began with an animated sun rising against a crimson sky, a now-legendary voice booming “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba.” Nothing would eclipse it.

Composer Hans Zimmer is seated at the mixing board at the Sony scoring stage, head bobbing to the music being performed by 107 musicians just a few yards away. He’s wearing a vintage “Lion King World Tour” T-shirt, frayed at the collar.

There’s new Beyoncé music on the way!
In addition to singing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” with Donald Glover, the mother of three, 37, has a brand-new song on the Lion King soundtrack. The tracklist for the Disney film was recently released and one song is titled “Tba,” which could be Bey’s music project.
“We have all the original songs, but there’s a song that she performed and wrote in the spirit of the production along with working with Lebo M., who’s part of it with Hans Zimmer,” Lion King director Jon Favreau confirmed to Fandango on Monday.

Elton John is going to face some stiff competition in this year’s Oscars race: Elton John.
He’ll have two tunes in competition for the Academy Award for best original song this year. The just announced track listing for the “Lion King” soundtrack reveals he and lyricist Tim Rice did write a new end-titles number for the upcoming remake, titled “Never Too Late,” which he also performs with the help of an African choir.
John was already an early contender in the Oscar song sweepstakes with “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” which he and Bernie Taupin wrote to go over the closing credits of his biopic, “Rocketman.” That number, set in a bouncy retro-Motown style, was performed as a sort of identical-twins duet between John and his screen portrayer, Taron Egerton.

Disney has offered up the first look at newborn Simba from its live-action remake of The Lion King. The teaser trailer for the CGI-heavy film is a nearly shot-for-shot remake of the opening of the 1994 animated classic, with the animals of the savanna gathering at Pride Rock to witness the introduction of the new prince.
James Earl Jones reprises his voice role of Mufasa in the teaser, delivering a near-exact monologue to his son Simba as his character did in the original film. “Everything the light touches is our kingdom.

Avicii and Kaskade are among the DJs who have reworked some of Disney's classic songs for a remix album.
The LP, called Dconstructed, includes 14 Edm mixes of tracks such as 'Circle Of Life' from The Lion King by Mat Zo, Frozen's 'Let It Go' by Armin van Buuren, and 'Derezzed' from Tron: Legacy by Avicii.

Avicii added: "My first remix of Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy was so long ago, but it was a significant moment of recognition in my career. It's great to be a part of it again, to refresh the track, and to let everyone hear Negin's voice."

It's been 15 years since Simba first mounted Broadway's Pride Rock, and the cast and creative team took the occasion to celebration the anniversary on Sunday. "I must admit, I did think it'll be difficult for this one to be transferred to stage," Oscar- and Tony-winning composer Tim Rice told Backstage. "And I was worried it might be a bit like 'Cats'—nothing wrong with 'Cats'—I was worried that it would look like a copy of 'Cats.' But of course, Julie [Taymor] did a great job and a very original interpretation." One of the appeals of the long-running show is the fantastic puppets and masks, and puppet designer Michael Curry shared with Backstage how he works with performers to creat the charcter. "I start with the actors," Curry said. "I'm a little different than most puppet designers in that I use puppets as an extentions of the actor. It's very...

Disney’s two sequels to its timeless animated film The Lion King, The Lion King 1.5 (2004) and The Lion King 2 (1998), were released on Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 4, 2011, but only in a mega-priced The Lion King Trilogy set, so it’s great to see them get their own separate releases.
Both of the G-rated animated sequels feature the voices of Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) as the young lion Simba, Nathan Lane (Stuart Little) as Timon and Ernie Sabella (TV’s House of Mouse) as Pumbaa.
In The Lion King 1 1/2, Timon and Pumbaa tell where they came from and explain what really happened during the big events of the franchise’s first movie.
In The Lion King 2, Timon and Pumbaa have a new cub in their life, Kiara, the strong-willed daughter of now-grownup Simba.

Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, the directors of The Lion King, discuss the classic Disney film.
The Movie Pool recently sat in on a Q&A session with Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, the directors of Disney's The Lion King, as they reflect on the film, the 3D re-release, and the upcoming Blu-ray release. Following is a transcript of the entire Q&A.
Q - What is your opinion about Broadway Musical The Lion King directed by Julie Taymor?
A - Rob Minkoff: When I first heard that a musical was being contemplated for The Lion King I was concerned it would attempt to be too literal. Beauty & The Beast had already made the leap to the stage and it was very much a replica of the animated movie. I didn't think that kind of approach would work for The Lion King. When Julie Taymor was brought on board...
