ObituaryInnocent will go down in the history of Malayalam cinema as a stupendously talented actor, who spread unmitigated joy on screen, writes Neelima Menon. The heavily pronounced Irinjalakuda slang, that bashful tilt of his head, the peculiar gesticulations, the fine balance between subtlety and hyperbole, and the unforgettable one-liners delivered with soft precision. What made Innocent one of the most cheering sights in Malayalam cinema is all of these and more. Like most in his legion of stupendously talented supporting actors, Innocent flourished during the late 1980s and 90s, popularly termed as the ‘golden period’ in Malayalam cinema. It was during this period that Innocent, who had already made his debut as an actor and producer a decade earlier, found that his niche lay in initiating Malayalam cinema into the realm of satire. So after 50-60 films in which he played notable as well as forgettable characters, Innocent allied with...

Interview ‘Nila’ is one of the two films selected by the Kerala government in the second year of its project to fund women filmmakers. Director Indu Lakshmi talks to Tnm.Indu Lakshmi had listened with interest to one of the last interviews given by the late poet and activist Sugathakumari. It was only an audio clipping, recorded at a time the poet was unwell and tired. But Indu could sense in her voice a fire, a passion that refused to fade. She thought of her own experience at a time of painful surgeries. She believes it is her will power that got her through all that pain. This thought, about what the mind is capable of even when the body is weak, led her to write the story of Nila, the first film she directed. Nila is one of the two films chosen for funding by the Kerala government in...

KollywoodThis bizarre action thriller directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu tries very hard to be clever, but is filled with carelessness in the scripting.Sowmya RajendranSeven Screen StudioCobra is 3 hours, 3 minutes and 3 seconds long. This exhausting runtime is by design. ‘333’ is an angel number (a number sequence that contains repetition), and the hero of the film is a mathematical prodigy with schizophrenia named Madhi (Vikram). For a film obsessed with showing off mathematical calculations, I want to ask a question: how old is Madhi supposed to be? Vikram, in real life, is 56. In the film’s flashback sequence which is said to be ‘20 years ago’, he appears as a boy who isn’t older than 10 or 12. The college boy version of Madhi is played by another actor altogether (Sarjano Khalid). So, between ages 20 and 30, how did Madhi get a completely new face? Why was my mind occupied with such calculations? Because this...

ReviewThough worth watching on the big screen for its making, the film is heavily inspired by 'Troy' and the lack of originality makes it predictable. Sowmya RajendranMarakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham is Priyadarshan's ambitious film on Kunjali Marakkar, a warrior who fought in the army of the Zamorin in 16th century Kozhikode and was instrumental in defending the coast from the Portuguese. The details about his life are sketchy, and this is something that the film acknowledges right at the beginning. What unfolds, therefore, isn't entirely an accurate rendering of history but a fictional account that takes inspiration from several other stories of war, betrayal, loyalty and grandeur. To the team's credit, the visuals are stunning — from the dreamy song sequence between the young Kunjali (Pranav Mohanlal) and his bride (Kalyani Priyadarshan) to the stormy seas and bloodied battlefield. Pranav's close resemblance to Mohanlal, who plays the older Kunjali, makes...

ReviewThe film is a tense exploration of religion, politics and human relationships within the framework of a home invasion film. Sowmya RajendranThe faultlines in our personal relationships have perhaps never been tested more than in the present political climate where hate and bigotry have been normalised to unprecedented levels. Several people have severed ties with friends and family over poisonous WhatsApp forwards and the arguments that break out over them. Kuruthi, directed by Manu Warrier and written by Anish Pallyal, is a tense exploration of religion, politics, and human relationships within the framework of a home invasion film. Set in Erattupetta, the story revolves around two families that are united by tragedy. Ibru (Roshan Mathew), who lost his wife and daughter to a landslide, and lives with his brother Rasool (Naslen) and father Moosakka (a superb Mammukoya); and Sumathi (Srindaa) and her brother Preman (Manikandarajan) who lost their respective spouses to the same disaster.

ReviewThe film does not shy away from putting together all the elements of a superstar film, but with all its flaws, it has a message worth listening to.CrisLong before the pandemic, One was announced with a five-word introduction – Mammootty plays Kerala Chief Minister. When it finally reached theatres, it was election time in Kerala. The film received renewed attention. The interest grew when the trailer came, bearing a few marked semblances to the real life Cm, Pinarayi Vijayan. But it turns out, there is very little to connect Mammootty’s Kadakkal Chandran to Pinarayi Vijayan in the film. Writers Bobby and Sanjay together with director Santhosh Viswanathan have managed to tell a refreshing tale around a topic written about many times before – Kerala politics. One does not shy away from putting together all the right elements of a superstar film. A situation is set for Mammootty to make a grand entry.

And with Assembly elections just weeks away in Kerala, now is as good a time as any to revisit Sandesham, Sathyan Anthikad's 1991 comedy about a home that's split over politics, way before family WhatsApp groups entered the scene and accomplished it. Flix Flashback In #WatchWithTNM, we write about Mohanlal-Sreenivasan's 'Nadodikattu' and their endearing bumbling friendship. Sowmya RajendranWhen Dasan (Mohanlal) rushes into a fight with a rich man to impress a woman, Vijayan (Sreenivasan) tells him that he's being foolish. But, when the rich man calls Dasan a 'scoundrel', Vijayan immediately deflates the latter's car tyres. They throw insults at each other all day long but at the first hint of trouble, they turn to each other, shouting "Dasa!" and "Vijaya!". Nadodikattu, directed by Sathyan Anthikad, is a story about survival and it should rightfully have been a tear-inducing tragedy. But, that's not how real life plays out -- real life is often about people finding it within themselves to love, laugh, and make the best of their precarious circumstances. The two bumbling friends, Dasan and Vijayan, are just trying to survive and their life, which is a comedy of errors, never...

MollywoodWith time, the village in Malayalam cinema has grown in size to accommodate a more multidimensional group of characters and ideas.Neelima MenonDirectors often have the annoying habit of creating oversimplified backgrounds to set their stories. Take, for example, the village in early Malayalam cinema, often depicted as an idyllic, pristine small town featuring a host of simple, straightforward characters. But with time, the village in Malayalam cinema has grown in size to accommodate a more multidimensional group of characters and ideas. Here, we take a look at this evolution of Malayalam cinema's rustic locales. Untarred roads, elongated tiled-roof homes, paddy fields, decadent temples, makeshift tea shops, and ponds form the backdrop of the nameless village in Sathyan Anthikad’s Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu. In fact, every Anthikad film village brims with all things cheerful and ordinary, amongst which he finds his unusual story. Everyone knows their way around the village and...

MollywoodThis film would have made sense if the genre had been sci-fi and there was a scientific explanation for why all the middle-aged adults behave like pimply teenagers.Sowmya RajendranMarconi Mathai, directed by Sanil Kalathil, would have been a cute film if the protagonists had been giggly 15-year-olds in the 1940s who are discovering love for the first time. The shy hero who does not know how to profess his love to the wide-eyed, innocent heroine. The naughty friends who encourage him to express his feelings and rag him as he blushes and blunders through his emotions. The shy hero doing silly things to win the heroine's attention. Ah, those remarkable black-and-white high school days! But unfortunately, Marconi Mathai is not about pimply teenagers; it is a film about fully grown, middle-aged adults in the year 2019. To be clear, the genre is not science fiction. There is no explanation for...

Mollywood The trailer of the film was released on Sunday after months of delay due to the Cbfc demanding cuts in the film. Tnm StaffAfter much delay, the trailer of the Malayalam movie Aabhasam is finally out. The film starring Rima Kallingal and Suraj Venjaramoodu, was to hit the screens on January 5 but was delayed due to the 'A' certificate awarded by the Cbfc. "Jinnah is gone, Marx is full, Gandhi has two seats...otherwise there is Godse and Ambedkar. Which one do you want?" the trailer opens with this question. The film, which is a dark comedy on the politics prevailing in the country, is built around an overnight bus journey from Bengaluru to Kerala. The bus service company known as Democracy Travels has buses with names of persons associated with the police and democracy in some way. The trailer also hints at beef politics, moral policing and communal tensions present in the country. Actor Prakash Raj took to Facebook to release the trailer of the film. Stating that the film is an "engrossing, seeking, questioning film," he launched the YouTube link of the trailer on his post. Also read: 'Aabhasam' gets 'A' certificate for being anti-establishment: Director slams Cbfc Apart from the lead actors, Aabhasam's star cast also includes ace actors Indrans, Mammukoya, Nassar, and Alencier Ley Lopez. The film is written and directed by Jubith Namradath, who is making his directorial debut with the project. Dev has composed the background score and Oorali has scored the music for the soundtrack. Prasanna S. Kumar has cranked the camera for this movie with Shameer and Muhammed editing it. In January, the Cbfc initially awarded an 'A' certification to the film which was contested by the film's crew. The board also demanded muting of certain dialogues and cuts to the film. The crew members, who were fine with muting, vehemently opposed the cuts, which resulted in the postponement of the release. Lamenting about it, producer Sanju Unnithan said that the delay in the censor certification means they have to wait for one more year to take part in the film festivals and awards. He has been quoted by the Deccan Chronicle as saying, “We are ready to comply with their demand — to make a few mutes. Still, the movie can’t escape ‘A’ certificate. Some of the claims made at the Censor Board are that the film does not convey any positive message to society and it is all dark. But it is a satire. We won’t accept the certificate and will place a request to review the decision.” Watch the trailer here: (With inputs from Digital Native)...
