Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions today released the first look trailer for the world premiere West End production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, taking the moment to also announce an extension into 2025 of the production’s London run.
This past March, casting notices for a Broadway production suggested a New York run for Stranger Things: The First Shadow is in the works.
In the new trailer, the telekinetic Creel (played on the West End by Louis McCartney) is depicted in a sort of prequel to the events of the Netflix TV series. Specifically, a terrified Creel is just beginning to suspect his gifts, and seems none too thrilled. “I’m Henry Creel. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m Henry Creel.”

Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the U.K. stage play based on the hit Netflix series, has dropped another trailer looking at the drama’s biggest villain, Henry Creel.
“It’s not real. I’m normal,” an anguished Creel, the telekinetic boy played by Louis McCartney, repeatedly declares in the latest teaser for the stage play. Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-director Justin Martin, the play has been extended to 2025 in London’s West End, as reports point to a possible transfer and premiere on Broadway next year.
The 1959-set prequel centers around younger versions of characters in the Netflix Stranger Things series characters, including Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams), Joyce Maldonado ( Isabella Pappas), Jim Hopper Jr. (Oscar Lloyd) and Bob Newby (Christopher Buckley).
The latest footage offers an origin story of how Henry Creel became number one, aka “001.” Creel is the younger version of the Jamie Campbell Bower...

A Broadway transfer may be in store for the stage production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A casting notice calling for video submissions from Equity actors has been posted for the production, with a listed Broadway start in 2025. A theater has not yet been named. Stephen Daldry, who helmed the West End production of the show, is listed as director for the possible Broadway transfer, with Justin Martin as a co-director.
Neither Netflix nor Sonia Friedman Productions, the two producers on the show, immediately responded to a request for comment on plans for Broadway. A spokesperson for the production in London said more information about the “future life of the production” will be shared at a later time. The audition notice alone does not automatically mean it’s coming to Broadway, but the play is already proving popular in the West End.

There was a time when the only spectacle required to set the theatrical world agog was to have something unexpectedly descend from the rafters. The helicopter in Miss Saigon. The chandelier in The Phantom of the Opera. Whichever actor’s harness snapped in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
It would be condescending to say that Harry Potter and The Cursed Child “brought” magic to London’s West End. But it set a new bar for a type of ambitious theatricality, burying anything that might otherwise be forgettable about Jack Thorne’s dry play under the equivalent of dozens of chandeliers and helicopters all descending nonstop for seven hours. It’s been a smash on every level, particularly the most important one: Every performance brings an unusually young demographic to the West End (and to Broadway, where the show has been playing since 2018) and they leave generally happy.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” may be heading into its final season, but fans of the sci-fi phenomenon needn’t despair. A new Hawkins-set adventure, “The First Shadow,” is just beginning on London’s West End.
“The First Shadow” takes fans back in time to Hawkins High in 1959, before Jim Hopper (Oscar Lloyd) took in a strange child called Eleven, Joyce Maldonado’s (Isabella Pappas) son went missing and Bob Newby (Christopher Buckley) was, well, mauled to death by Demodogs. As the series’ signature ’80s neon and synthesizers transform into leather and rock ’n’ roll, the play (which starts previews on Friday before opening on Dec. 14) promises to immerse audiences even deeper into the mysterious world of “Stranger Things,” thanks to masterful special effects.
“It’s like being in a fucking action film — like being in an episode of ‘Stranger Things,’ but you’re doing it live every night,” Lloyd tells Variety.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow — the stage play based on the hit Netflix series — promises to be a “cinematic” experience that lays the groundwork for the series biggest villain, Henry Creel.
In a new three-minute featurette released Monday for the streamer’s annual “Stranger Things Day” (the annual event marks the day when Will Beyers, in 1983, went missing in Hawkins, Indiana), Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer were joined by the production’s creative team and cast, including director Stephen Daldry, as they teased what fans can expect out of the upcoming live stage show.

While much time still stands before the conclusion to the Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” Netflix series, with Season 5 awaiting a deal for its actors, the prequel play — “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” — will give audiences a glimpse further into the past and the origins of the Upside Down.
Set in 1959 Hawkins, the play will focus on the arrival of Henry Creel to “a regular town with regular worries.” Teenage Jim Hopper, Bob Newby and Joyce Maldonado also star, as does a younger Dr. Martin Brenner (Patrick Vaill), who began the cruel experiments on Young Henry.
As with any new iteration of “Stranger Things,” there’s a new crucial character — this time, it’s Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams). There is also a Principal Newby (Matthew Pigeon), but that figure is of less importance to the plot.

“Stranger Things: The First Shadow” is shaping up to replicate the high stakes of the Netflix drama, as demonstrated by photos released from rehearsals of the West End stage play.

Additionally, the production has set a discounted ticket initiative titled “Shadow Seats” in partnership with TodayTix. For each performance of the show’s run, there will be 11 pairs of tickets available for £19.59 per seat, with some located in the front row of the stalls. A trailer for the Stranger Things stage play promises fans will not only get to return to The Upside Down soon, but might also get some clues into what’s ahead in season five.
The minute-long trailer for Stranger Things: The First Shadow was posted to the show’s social media Wednesday, and featured a series of clips presented on a static-y analog TV. “The beginning of the Stranger Things story might hold the key to what is next…” the trailer teases. Beyond images of the popular Netflix series’ cast and scenes from seasons past, eight buttons, a clock with spiders spilling out and a red-lit stage are also featured.
The trailer marks the second look at the show — expected to open later this year on the West End at the Phoenix Theatre — following a shorter, but just as cryptic, teaser in March. The show was initially announced in July 2022, with Trefry,...

Henry Creel's dark past is coming to light in the Duffer Brothers' forthcoming "Stranger Things" stage play, "Stranger Things: The First Shadow." The prequel, set in 1959 Hawkins, premieres in London's West End later this year and will take a deep dive into Vecna's chilling origin story. Like Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will seeing their D&d nightmares realized, the theatrical production promises to take fans right back to the beginning of Hawkins's deepest and most terrifying secrets - and then some.
On July 5, the show's official social media accounts posted a preview clip for the play, teasing that the "Stranger Things" origin story just "might hold the key to what comes next," too.

The Duffer Brothers are leaving Easter eggs for the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” in suitably strange places, like the upcoming stage play “The First Shadow.”
The teaser for the upcoming West End production hints that “the beginning of the ‘Stranger Things’ story might hold the key to what comes next.” A series of clips from the first season of the hit Netflix series, including Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) being experimented on, are also part of the teaser footage.

A very cool teaser trailer for the upcoming Stranger Things stage adaptation The First Shadow doesn’t give away much by way of plot details, but we do see some clips of the TV series’ early episodes only to watch the screen shatter and a mysterious red, glowing orb appear on the stage of an otherwise empty theater.
Then, slowly appearing, are the words: “The beginning of the Stranger Things Story Might Hold The Key To What Comes Next”.
That empty West End theater won’t stay that way for long: The First Shadow, revealed by Deadline last summer, will begin performances Nov. 17 at London’s Phoenix Theatre, and judging by the Phoenix’s ticket site, performances are already sold out through mid-December.

The Broadway production of Prima Facie has recouped its $4.1 million capitalization costs as of June 18 and broke a house box office record on the way.
The one-woman play, starring Jodie Comer, recouped its Broadway capitalization in 10 weeks of performances — a quick turnaround for any production — and grossed $1,107,829 last week, a record for any eight-show week at the Golden Theatre. This beat the previous box office record at the Golden Theatre held by Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, starring Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf, which grossed $1,077,919 in the week ending June 17, 2018.
Prima Facie began performances on April 11 and runs through July 2. The production has grossed close to $1 million for several weeks of its run, with an average ticket price hovering around $150 and capacity close to 100 percent.
The recoupment comes a week after Comer won the Tony Award for best lead actress in a play. In Prima Facie, written by Suzie Miller...

Jodie Comer now has a Tony to add to her award shelf.
The actress took home the Leading Actress in a Play Tony for “Prima Facie.”
“Prima Facie” is a 100-minute, one-woman play by Suzie Miller that follows a young barrister, Tessa, who often represents men charged with rape. Placing her faith in the court, Tessa isn’t conflicted about the predators she defends…until she is raped herself and must grapple with the ways the court system is systemically broken for survivors of sexual violence.
“To every person who feels represented by Tessa, this has been my greatest honor,” Comer said in her acceptance speech. “And it continues to be! There’s three weeks left!”
In their review, Variety noted, “I have to recommend it, even though I don’t love it—it’s not fun or entertaining or inspiringly good in the way theater can be. But this show,...

Jodie Comer is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role at the Tonys this weekend for her play “Prima Facie” currently on Broadway, but the actress had to leave a June 7 matinee performance due to worsening conditions in New York City’s air.
Eyewitnesses noted on Twitter that 10 minutes into the show at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, Comer said she couldn’t breathe and was helped offstage by a stage manager. The play eventually resumed with understudy Dani Arlington taking over for Comer.
Representatives for the play shared the following statement with IndieWire: “Today’s matinee of ‘Prima Facie’ was halted approximately 10 minutes into the performance after Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to the poor air quality in New York City because of smoke from the Canadian wildfires. The performance was set to start again from the top with understudy Dani Arlington going on for Ms.

Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

The production will now run through through Sunday, July 2, at the Golden Theatre. The original end date was June 18. The play’s official opening was last Sunday, April 23.
“I am so humbled by the response to this show opening on Broadway,” Comer said in a statement. “The community here has been so welcoming to us all on Prima Facie so I am absolutely thrilled that we have been able to extend the run by two weeks to hopefully meet even more of the wonderful audiences that are here.”
Comer’s performance of the show on the West End earned her an Olivier Award for Best Actress. Playwright Suzie Miller won the Olivier for Best New Play. The play is directed by Justin Martin.

“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

As the criminal barristers in London’s Crown Court know, according to star-on-the-rise Tessa Ensler (Jodie Comer), any prosecutor or defense attorney could come out on top depending on the day and case at hand. “We don’t call it losing,” Tessa, herself a defender who usually fighting for men accused of sexual assault, explains. “We call it ‘coming second.’”
But as awards season fast approaches next month, an unchallenged series of wins may be all but assured for Comer, the star of TV’s Killing Eve who won an Olivier Award earlier this month for her performance (her first stage role) as Tessa in the West End production of the one-woman show Prima Facie. Killing Eve star Jodie Comer claims Broadway as her own in her tour de force performance of Prima Facie, a scalding indictment of the law and its limits opening tonight at the Golden Theatre.
Comer plays Tessa, a young, working class Liverpool woman who has become one of London’s most promising defense lawyers through sheer intelligence and needle-sharp courtroom instincts. Her specialty – perhaps, or perhaps not, foisted upon her by the cynical male superiors who run things in ways Tessa only slowly comprehends – is the defense of men charged with sexual assault.
Tessa’s outwardly compassionate, woman-to-woman cross-examinations of assault victims are no less effective for their sympathetic overtones, perhaps more so. Her probing questions and geiger-counter instincts for finding the hidden bombs that will blow a victim’s story to smithereens make Tessa an invaluable force in the courtroom.

It's time for "Stranger Things" to make the leap from the screen ... to the stage? Yes, that's right — a "Stranger Things" stage play is on the way, and soon. The play, titled "Stranger Things: The First Shadow," will have its world premiere in late 2023 at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End. Stephen Daldry directs, with co-direction by Justin Martin. Kate Trefry, a writer on the series, penned the play. "The First Shadow" is produced by Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions. The Duffer Brothers serve as creative producers, with 21 Laps as associate producers.
Tickets will go on sale this spring, with more details to come.
The play is a prequel, set in Hawkins in 1959, and will feature a younger version of David Harbour's character Hopper. And, since it's "Stranger Things," you can expect a whole bunch of creepy, weird stuff to happen, too. Is "Stranger Things" big enough to warrant a stage production?...

A stage-play adaptation of the hit Netflix franchise “Stranger Things” will premiere in London’s West End later this year, the streamer said Wednesday.
Based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” will be set in the 1950s as an origin story that “will take you right back to the beginning of the ‘Stranger Things’ story – and may hold the key to the end.” The play, written by Trefry, a writer and co-executive producer for the TV series, will be rooted in the mythology and world of the Netflix global phenomenon.
“We are beyond excited about ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow,'” said the series’ creators, Matt and Ross Duffer. “Collaborating with the brilliant Stephen Daldry has been nothing short of inspiring, and Kate Trefry has written a play that is at turns surprising, scary, and heartfelt. So, here’s the good news. Martha Plimpton has packed up her home in New York to live and work in London. Pooches to follow.
Her first gig? Playing Jacque in Shakespeare’s As You Like It on the stage of @sohoplace, the West End’s first purpose-built theatre in half a century. That Plimpton should deliver, with aplomb, the ‘All the world’s a stage’ monologue in Josie Rourke’s lively festive production, seems wholly appropriate because the same viewpoint applies elsewhere in town.

To watch Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) make the Harold Pinter Theatre’s stage her world in Australian writer Suzie Miller’s legal twister Prima Facie confirms that she’s one of her generation’s best thespians. It was also her debut professional theatre performance.

Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) won the best actress prize at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her West End debut performance playing a criminal barrister specialising in defending rapists — who is then sexually assaulted herself.
Comer won critical and public acclaim for the solo role in Prima Facie, which is written by Suzie Miller and directed by Justin Martin. James Bierman’s Empire Street Productions will launch the courtroom drama at Broadway’s Golden Theatre from April 11, 2023.
Stephen Graham (The Irishman), like Comer a Liverpudlian, presented Comer with the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress, named in honor of the star who died in 2009.
Comer told guests, who included Richardson’s mother Dame Vanessa Redgrave and sister Joely Richardson, that her experience in Prima Facie had been “utterly terrifying, having never trained,” added: “I didn’t know if I could execute this.”
