It’s one of the year’s most awaited discs: the recent restored and remastered The War of the Worlds ’53 in a glorious 4K Ultra HD edition. A second Blu-ray disc of When Worlds Collide ’51 is too good to be called a bonus extra: this edition looks better than anything seen since original Technicolor prints. In one show we endure scurvy invaders from The Red Planet; in the other a rogue Astral Body threatens Earth with obliteration, necessitating escape on a space ship. Don’t bother checking online for tickets, the flight is sold out. CineSavant has the lowdown for collectors: how good does the new release look?

New Delhi, Dec 1 (Ians) Apart from questioning the scheduling of the Big Bash League at a later date than promised -- from December 3 to December 10, without it coinciding with the first India-Australia Test -- Channel 7 has raised objection to Cricket Australia (CA) giving undue favour to the Australian state of Tasmania.
Lewis Martin, managing director of Seven Network, expresses surprise in an affidavit over CA hosting of eight of the first 12 men's Bbl matches in small stadia that makes no commercial sense.
"CA scheduling the playing of eight of the first 12 men's Bbl matches in Tasmania in two relatively small and unheralded stadia (including the University of Tasmania Stadium) would be commercially irrational unless CA were otherwise incentivised, presumably by arrangement with the Government of Tasmania, to do so. In 2019-20 men's Bbl tournament, only one of the first 12 men's Bbl matches was played in Tasmania," said Martin in...

It’s a review. No, it’s a rant. Stop, you’re both right. CineSavant’s overt mission is to demonstrate that old movies, especially old Science Fiction movies, are more relevant than ever. There is at present no authorized home video release of this amazing 1952 politico-religious pretzel of a movie. The surprise is that it accurately presages the media hysteria that underpins our present day Info Wars. Fake News comes from the sky, and a major world revolution results — for the better? Will religious fundamentalism rule all? This may be the most radical faith-based picture ever made.

I guess Howard Hughes wanted to go easy on Minnesota Nazis. William Cameron Menzies directs a Cold War thriller about an insidious germ warfare conspiracy -- it's an early paranoid suspense tale with apocalyptic consequences. Seven’s Melbourne station has hired Olympic swimmer Giaan Rooney to present the weather for Seven News over the festive period.
Rooney joins after a stint as a presenter on Nine, where among a variety of roles at the network she interviewed Australian swimmers poolside at the Olympics. She was also a holiday-period weather presenter for Nine’s Today show.
After presenting the weather over Christmas and New Year, she will front Seven’s Australian Open tennis coverage.
Rooney said in a press release: “The time is right to expand my horizons. Seven has so many great shows, it covers sport so well, there are so many opportunities. And what better way to start than the all-important weather reports during the festive season.”
Seven Melbourne’s MD Lewis Martin, said: “We’re thrilled to have Giaan on-board. She’s a natural in front of the camera, she’s versatile and...

Pristel replaces Steve Carey, who will take a break from the news desk, the network said.
Pristel resigned after a four-year stint with Herald Sun earlier this month.
The news comes after Seven News was beaten by Nine News in 22 straight rating weeks in Melbourne.
Managing director of Seven Melbourne, Lewis Martin said: “No job is more demanding than leading a news team. The fierce competition to be first and fresh is unrelenting. In this environment, Steve always cared about his people and getting the story to air before anyone else. He leaves a team with a history of success and well-placed to continue that success. Steve is to be congratulated on everything he has achieved.”

Some comments on my review of the Doctor Who Christmas Special 'A Christmas Carol' got me thinking about how it came to be that everyone's favourite Time Lord can never seem to get any 'action', romantically speaking. It's not been for want of attention or admirers; even back in the William Hartnell days, The Doctor was capable of flirting and even having a matrimonial 'near-miss' in the 1964 Who outing 'The Aztecs', so Matt Smith's Doctor is breaking no new ground in running away from connubial bliss with the 1957 version of Marilyn Monroe in 'A Christmas Carol'.
Can 47 years of sexual tension ever be released without killing the fundamental dynamic of the show? I've come to believe that it probably can't - which, if true, puts the Gallifreyan rogue at least neck-and-neck with Star Trek's Mr. Spock in terms of 'attractive unavailability'.
