In 2011, Dawn Porter arrived at Hot Docs Pitch Forum in the hopes of securing funding for her first documentary feature, “Gideon’s Army.” Thirteen years later, Porter is back in Toronto with her 10th feature doc “Luther: Never Too Much,” which opened the 31st edition of Hot Docs.
The 101-minute film about the life and career of the late R&b singer Luther Vandross made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and has since become an audience favorite on the festival circuit. In addition to serving as Hot Docs’ opening night film, the movie will also launch the Hot Doc’s Pop/ Life sidebar of films about music and musicians.
In the film, Porter chronicles Vandross’ rise from background singer to singing sensation via archival interviews with Vandross and new ones with his collaborators, including legendary recording artists Mariah Carey and Dionne Warwick. Rarely seen archives,...

When American soul and R&b icon Luther Vandross sang, he didn’t just produce beautiful musical sounds. He caressed and coddled each note with his famously velvety tenor voice, considering where to linger, when to whisper, or to gradually crescendo with an impeccable and ever-influential technique. In other words, he didn’t only sing, but created something ethereal, something that both pushed the form and felt like it gently poured straight out of his soul.
Considering the stamp he put on the American music industry, it feels strange that there hasn’t yet been a definitive documentary about Vandross’ unsung legacy until Dawn Porter’s “Luther: Never Too Much,” which had its world premiere recently at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. But that delay is perhaps fortuitous — after experiencing Porter’s loving portrait of the virtuosic musician, producer, and songwriter, you can’t imagine Vandross’ story being told by anyone else.

Although it isn’t structured any differently from dozens of other cradle-to-grave documentaries about artistic luminaries, “Luther: Never Too Much” sheds light on much more than just the life and career of R&b singer Luther Vandross. Drawn largely from interview and performance footage of Vandross over his almost 40 years in entertainment, and bolstered and contextualized by retrospective talks will collaborators and confidantes, director Dawn Porter’s film exposes some uneasy truths about the music industry and the media we may now know, but whose seeming ubiquitousness at the time he was alive may be difficult to fully comprehend.
White audience members in particular may stand to learn the most about him — a fact Porter pointedly attributes to the genre siloes of radio’s heyday and cultural prejudices against black singers who weren’t thin or light-skinned enough to receive the opportunity to cross over from R&b to pop.

When award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter — who directed the upcoming Luther Vandross documentary Luther: Never Too Much — thinks of her favorite song by the legendary singer, she selects “So Amazing,” the timeless track he wrote and produced for Dionne Warwick and later recorded himself.
But then she pauses. “I think it’s hard for me because I’m very attached to some scenes right now,” she says. Then she speaks about “Any Love,” Vandross’ autobiographical song about wanting to find the one and the sadness behind being alone. The track topped the R&b charts in the late ’80s.
“I really wanted him to be able to tell you his story as much as possible, so how do you do that with someone who’s not with us? A lot of that was thinking about the lyrics. [On] ‘Any Love,’ he was just endlessly frustrated with the absence of a romantic partner in his life,...

The year of 1998 belonged to R&b singer Monica.
She not only topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a whopping 13 weeks with “The Boy Is Mine,” her duet with Brandy, she launched another hit with “The First Night,” which logged five weeks on top of the pop charts. No other artist in that year spent more weeks at No. 1 than Monica.
Both songs appeared on her sophomore album, The Boy Is Mine, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Not only did Monica dominate 1998 — her success spilled over to 1999: Her album’s third single, “Angel of Mine,” also became a No. 1 Hot 100 hit and was the third most-successful song of that year.
Released when she was just 17 years old following the triumph of her 1995 debut Miss Thing, the now 43-year-old — who released the single “Letters” in June on her own imprint MonDeenise Music and will drop her album...

"Good night, John-Boy. Good night, Elizabeth. And good night, daddy. Good night, son. And good night, mama. Good night, Mary Ellen. Good night, Jim Bob." Even if you've never watched a single moment of the classic TV show "The Waltons," the impact the series has had on television continues on even to this day. With the series' roots stemming back all the way to one of the most hated episodes of "The Twilight Zone" in history, references to "The Waltons" have extended all the way to films like 2016's "The Nice Guys," where Matt Bomber's villainous Dr. Malek is given the code name "John Boy" as he shares a similar facial birthmark to John-Boy actor Richard Thomas.
Created by Earl Hamner Jr., "The Waltons" centered on the titular family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II, based on Hamner Jr.'s book "Spencer's Mountain." With a...

Randy Meisner, the bassist and founding member of the Eagles who sang lead vocal on the band’s first big hit, “Take It to the Limit,” has died. He was 77.
Meisner died Wednesday night in Los Angeles of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the Eagles announced on their website.
“Randy was an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band. His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit,'” a statement read.
In May 1968, Meisner joined Poco with former Buffalo Springfield members Richie Furay and Jim Messina and worked on that group’s first album, 1969’s Pickin’ Up the Pieces, but he quit shortly before the record was released.
In September 1971, Meisner, Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon formed the Eagles. They signed with David Geffen’s Asylum Records and released their eponymous...

CBS’s hit series The Waltons told the story of a tight-knit family making do during the Great Depression. Three all new celebrities in disguise took the stage for “DC Superheroes Night” on Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.” Despite a highly praised performance of “Break on Through” by The Doors, Wolf was named the third-place finisher behind Squirrel and Gargoyle. The beastly performer pulled off his mask to reveal himself as multi-platinum recording artist and two-time Grammy winner Michael Bolton. Panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger all correctly guessed the hit-maker’s unmistakable voice, but there was no helping Ken Jeong, who was adamant the Wolf was Richard Marx.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 9, episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 8 on Fox.
How are we supposed to live without Michael Bolton? The pop crooner was the latest celebrity to be revealed on “The Masked Singer,” as he was voted off the show as the Wolf.
It wasn’t much of a mystery this week, given how recognizable Bolton’s voice is. Even singing the Doors classic “Break on Through,” everyone (mostly) agreed it was him. For Wolf, Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg all named Michael Bolton. Ken Jeong went rogue and picked Richard Marx.
It was DC Superheroes night, and the episode opened with Nicole Scherzinger (dressed as the Catwoman), singing Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero.” Her fellow panelists were also in cosplay: Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg as Harley Quinn, Ken Jeong as the Riddler and Robin Thicke as,...

Ruth Marx, whose singing voice was heard on classic TV commercial jingles that likely reached as many ears as the pop songs of her famous son Richard Marx, died of lung cancer at her home in California on Aug. 24. She was 85.
Her death was announced to the Chicago Sun Times by son Richard. In a Facebook post, he also wrote, in part, “My heart is in a million pieces and I will love you with every breath of my life remaining.”
Among Ruth Marx’s most familiar vocal performances was the jingle for Chicken of the Sea tuna: “Ask any mermaid you happen to see, what’s the best tuna? Chicken of the Sea!”
The tuna jingle, as with other commercial songs on which she lent her voice, was written by her husband, the composer and arranger Dick Marx. Among the pair’s other collaborations: “You’ve Come a Long Way,...

In a social media post Wednesday afternoon, Kathy Griffin gave friends and supporters a frank, but optimistic account of how she’s doing after her lung cancer surgery on Monday.
Admitting that the procedure was “a little more than I had anticipated,” Griffin opened up about her determination to get through her recovery without risking a relapse in her prescription pill addiction, as it’s been one year since she attempted suicide and then entered treatment. But, she said, “I fear drugs and addiction more than I fear cancer. So I think I’ll be Ok.”
“To be honest, this cancer surgery was a little more than I had anticipated. Tonight will be my first night without any narcotic painkillers. Hello Tylenol, my new best friend! The last time I was in a hospital was in June 2020 when I tried to take my life and overdosed on prescription pills,” Griffin wrote.

Nostalgia-inducing Hollywood couple Daisy Fuentes and Richard Marx — she a regular on 1990s MTV as the network’s first Latina VJ, he the singer-songwriter of enjoyably cheesy ’80s and ’90s love anthems (“Right Here Waiting,” Nsync’s “This I Promise You”) — have added to their already impressive property portfolio with the purchase of a $9 million estate in guard-gated Hidden Hills. Simultaneously, they’ve sold an ocean-view Malibu mansion for $6.1 million, comfortably above the $5 million Marx paid for the place in 2015.
Though Fuentes and Marx are perhaps not as widely known today as they were during their early professional years, they’re clearly no less successful. Cuban-born Fuentes, 54, was a pioneer of the celebrity licensing/branding deals that are today an integral part of many artists’ income streams; by 2013, her namesake apparel brand had racked up a whopping $1.5 billion in lifetime sales. ‘Fire Tucker Carlson’: Fox News Host Condemned for Comments on Deadly Shooting of Kenosha Protesters
Fox News host Tucker Carlson received immediate backlash on Twitter after saying Kyle Rittenhouse, who was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the shootings of two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., “decided to maintain order when no one else would.”
“Are we really surprised this looting and arson accelerated to murder? How shocked are we that 17-year-olds with rifles decided they had to maintain order when no one else would? Everyone can see what was happening in Kenosha. It was getting crazier by the hour,” Carlson said on his show.
Video from Carlson’s Wednesday night Fox News broadcast went viral on Twitter, with many people speaking out against his comments and saying he should be fired.
Billy Eichner, Ike Barinholtz and Julie Klausner were among the entertainment-industry figures calling for Carlson to be fired.
