Navid McIllhargey, the former FilmEngine president is back with a new company — Vandal Entertainment — and he just optioned his first project under the new banner: a revenge thriller called The Feud. Financed by German investors Film House Germany and Summerstorm Entertainment, McIllhargey just purchased the spec by Matthew Altman and David Matalon (no, not the Matalon who used to head New Regency). Described as The Raid meets Winter’s Bone, the story follows a mysterious man who returns to his home in Iowa for his brother’s funeral when he finds himself head to head with the local crime boss and traps him and his friends in an abandoned farm complex. They must battle for their lives against impossible odds.

The opening of “Harry Potter VIII” this weekend, along with “Transformers III” and “X-Men: First Class,” reminds me of a story. It was the mid-‘80s and I was still covering the industry for Newsweek. I was having lunch with David Matalon, boss of the upstart studio Tri-Star, discussing the surprising tracking for the upcoming film “Rambo: First Blood, Part II.” Predictions were for it to be the hit of the summer, which it turned out to be. That surprised me. After all, outside “Rocky,” which by that point had run its course,...

Longtime 20th Century Fox executive Robert Harper will move across the lot to take the reins of Regency Filmed Entertainmen as its new chairman and CEO.
The new position, which essentially fills the vacancy left by former Regency Enterprises CEO David Matalon, who resigned this month, will see Harper oversee Regency's film production unit New Regency Prods. as well as its TV development and production division Regency Television.
"It's really exciting for me", Harper said. "I now get to be really involved in five to six movies a year rather than being sporadically and peripherally involved in 30-40 movies. I'm thrilled."
Fox and Regency are hopeful that Harper's new role will allow the companies to work together more effectively than they have in the past. The production company regularly produces a handful of films for Fox's annual slate.
"While we will miss Bob's daily counsel and guidance, we're fortunate that we will continue working closely with him in his new role at Regency," Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos said.

Director Doug Liman fears the shocking sex scenes between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in new movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith are so realistic, fans of Pitt's estranged wife Jennifer Aniston will boycott the film. Pitt and Jolie have repeatedly denied reports they started a passionate affair on the movie's set, causing the heart-throb's high-profile split from Aniston in January. But Liman is terrified Aniston's loyal admirers will see the graphic onscreen love-making and presume he has captured their moment of betrayal on film. And his anxieties sparked a vicious war of words with producer Dave Matalon, who wanted to delete the scenes to avoid losing audience figures. Liman says, "Matalon said, 'I don't want to lose that audience of people who are huge Jennifer Aniston fans, who are going to hate Angelina Jolie because the sex scene's too sexy. People will see the sex scene and say, 'Oh that's how Angie did it'. It'll be like , 'She used her wiles to seduce him'."...
