Helen Reddy, the Australian pop singer who died Tuesday at age 78, was an unlikely pop superhero. She sang in a smooth timbre that never lost its becalmed manner — call her the anti-Joplin — and most of the Seventies hits for which she’s known (“Delta Dawn,” “No Way to Treat a Lady,” “Angie Baby”) were the essence of the smooth pop that appealed to baby boomers then approaching their settling-down thirties. Reddy was more of a regular presence on talk and variety shows and in Vegas than at rock clubs.

The idea of creating a separate organization to honor the diversity of Latin music was a discussion that took place for years before it actually happened, but an event driven by one of pop music’s most important crossover artists solidified it.
During the 41st Grammy Awards ceremony, a young Ricky Martin was scheduled to perform “La Copa de La Vida (The Cup of Life),” the theme to the 1998 World Cup. The success of the song put Martin on the map, and with the help of Miami Sound Machine producer-executive Emilio Estefan, the Recording Academy booked him to perform at the 1999 Grammy Awards.
Martin’s voice, moves and charisma so captivated the audience that a phenomenon the press called the “Latin Pop Explosion” ensued.
“It was a ‘before and after’ for my career when I had the opportunity to perform at the Grammys,” Martin says. “Things were never the same.

Smashing Pumpkins should have been in high spirits heading into the making of their second LP. But according to Billy Corgan, the lead-up to Siamese Dream was one of the darkest chapters in the band’s history. “We were on tour, selling out everywhere we go,” the singer told Rolling Stone in 1995 of the period following their 1991 debut, Gish. “Everything went cool, fine, dandy. Suddenly, boom: Nirvana. We went from being seen as future stars almost to has-beens, people saying, ‘Well, if you were so good, this would have happened to you.

Adam Miller Who Would Give His Only Song Away (Chelsea Records)
When Wes Farrell, the man who penned the perennial evergreen "Hang On Sloopy," and was overseer to the phenomenal chart successes of the Partridge Family and David Cassidy, set up his own record label in 1972, his maiden release wasn't a sure fire pop confection. He began proceedings with an exquisitely crafted collection of psych outsider introspection. Adam Miller, his new discovery and recipient of this gracious act of faith didn't set the world aflame, he didn't even darken it's edge, and today remains unknown, his album the victim of at best a misreading of the small print one is required to field when stumbling across an artist with no fame attached to the name above the title, more than four decades after the event. Chelsea Records became an outlet for pop and disco, especially the wonderfully camp and catchy Disco Tex and his Sexolettes,...

Whether you remember them as the women who played with Prince in The Revolution or as a pop duo or as the Emmy winning composers of Nurse Jackie, Heroes, Crossing Jordan, and now, the new Fox series, Touch, the innovative musical force that is Wendy & Lisa is a hard act to define, and certainly one of the best in the business when it comes to sheer musicianship and experimenting with the new.
Touch, starring Kiefer Sutherland, is the duo's third partnership with television showrunner, Tim Kring.
Coleman says, "Tim tells stories the way that I write music."
Touch Trailer:
Melvoin agrees:
Tim's mind and Lisa's mind are a perfect combination especially for this show. Just the way Lisa plays music in general, with a lot of polyrhythms, harmonic oddness, and different tempos all together, but no matter how crazy it can get, you never lose where home base is. The...
