Exclusive: Oscar winner Timothy Hutton has headed to London to star in the world premiere of The Sex Party written and directed by Tony Award laureate Terry Johnson.
Rehearsals are now underway at the Menier Chocolate Factory, located in the shadow of London Bridge on the south side of the capital, where the raunchy drama, that starts off as a cheese and wine evening, will begin previews performances on November 4, with an opening night set for November 15.
“It’s a play about poking fun at all things woke, it will offend everybody,” said a gleeful David Babani, the Menier Chocolate Factory’s artistic director.
Babani explained that Hutton, who won a best supporting actor Academy Award for his role in Ordinary People over four decades ago, will play Jeff, described as a shady businessman, who hooks up with Magdalena, an equally shady Russian lady, played by Amanda Donohoe (Liar Liar...

Who says death is no laughing matter? Hours after Alice (Keeley Hawes) moves into the tech-heavy “smart house” designed by her partner, Harry (Jason Merrells), he falls down the stairs to his death. And he never even told Alice how the toilet flushes! In the six-episode series Finding Alice, the resilient Alice goes through a roller coaster of emotions as she deals with her overbearing family, secrets Harry kept from her and their daughter (Isabella Pappas), and the detectives who find the death suspicious. (Credit: Acorn TV) Cowriter and director Roger Goldby doesn’t see anything odd about injecting dark humor into a bereavement story. He created Finding Alice with Hawes and fellow writer Simon Nye, all of whom met while working on PBS’s The Durrells in Corfu, another series about a widowed mother moving on. “We share a similar sensibility in terms of humor,” Goldby says. “None of...

Finding Alice is a brilliant new series that begins on ITV this coming Sunday, and while featuring a host of treasured British talent, it was the show’s impressive newcomer we had the pleasure of speaking to, as we sat down to speak to the rising star Isabella Pappas.
We ask Pappas about her experience working with Keeley Hawes, and Nigel Havers, as well as Joanna Lumley, Gemma Jones and Kenneth Cranham (we told you it was treasured). She also comments on the incredible set, and her plans to watch the show, and if she feels a little like this period in her life is the quiet before the storm. She also talks about her childhood and whether acting is something she always wanted to do.
But that’s not to say she’s come completely out of the blue, as Pappas had an Olivier award nomination to her name.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 28 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 28; last year only 21 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Underneath Safe House's over-reliance on flashback and cheap tricks lies a beautifully directed, strongly performed drama...
This review contains spoilers.
We’ve reached the halfway point in this new ITV drama starring former Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston, and the dramatic moments of the previous instalment hang heavy throughout Safe House episode three.
During part two’s denouement, we were introduced to new character Gemma Underwood. And then we were quickly unintroduced to her as she was murdered by the villain of the piece, Michael Collersdale (played very devilishly by Peter Ferdinando). Her link to the ongoing events with the Blackwood family (who have been stashed away in the lake district in the titular safe house along with Eccleston’s Robert after an attack by Collersdale) is revealed - she’s the sister of mother Ali (Holby City’s Nicola Stephenson).

From ITV comes yet another Monday night drama to add to their roster of impressive output in recent times.
Safe House, from writer Michael Crompton (who recently penned ITV’s excellent Code of A Killer), sees Christopher Eccleston play ex-policeman Robert who has left the force behind him with his wife Katy, played by Marsha Thomason, for a quiet life in the beauty and tranquility, not to mention solitude, of the Lake District.
We quickly discover Robert left the police due to the the execution of a witness he was protecting, an event which continues to haunt him. He’s visited by his former colleague and friend Dci Mark Maxwell, Paterson Joseph, with a proposition for the couple.

ITV's Safe House could become a returning series, writer Michael Crompton has confirmed.
Christopher Eccleston stars in the four-parter as a retired detective who turns his home into a 'safe house' for strangers at risk.
"The idea was actually given to me by Paula Cuddy [of producers Eleventh Hour Films]," Crompton revealed at a recent press launch. "But it always intrigued me - the sort of people who do run a safe house and why, and just that whole world.
"You're under incredible pressure, and there's a vacuum in which anything can happen - so it was a really exciting premise and one that hopefully we can return to over the next 2-3-4-5 series."
Cuddy added that there are "most definitely" plans for more Safe House, with each potential new series following the plight of a new series of guests.
