The “In Memoriam” segment of the Academy Awards is guaranteed to be two things: moving and frustrating. While we laud the academy for its efforts to be even more expansive at the 2018 Oscars with the number of people to whom it pays tribute (51), it is vexing that certain famous faces were excluded. Above, watch as Eddie Vedder sings the late Tom Petty‘s “Room at the Top” as the three minute video unspools.
Among those missing from this “In Memoriam” video, the most glaring omission is 1956 Best Supporting Actress winner Dorothy Malone (“Written on the Wind”). After more than a decade as a contract player at both Rko and Warner Bros., she changed her good girl image with her searing performance as an alcoholic in Douglas Sirk’s lush drama and took home an Oscar for her efforts. She went on to headline TV’s version of the Oscar-nominated “Peyton Place.

The upcoming 90th Academy Awards will mark the 25th consecutive year that the Oscars will feature an “In Memoriam” segment. While it had been done on occasion before, the annual tribute to Academy members and other film legends started a regular tradition at the 1994 ceremony hosted by Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg.

Tony Curtis grew up idolizing the suave and funny Cary Grant, emulated his romantic moves as an actor and then performed a brilliant impersonation of Grant for Billy Wilder. The next step had to be co-starring with the great man himself. Blake Edwards’ amiable, relaxed submarine movie allows Grant to play with ladies’ under-things, while Curtis wrestles with a pig.

Blake Edwards: Director of the 'Pink Panther' movies – and Julie Andrews' husband for more than four decades – was at his best handling polished comedies and a couple of dead serious dramas. Blake Edwards movies: Best known for slapstick fare, but at his best handling polished comedies and dramas The Pink Panther and its sequels[1] are the movies most closely associated with screenwriter-director-producer Blake Edwards, whose film and television career spanned more than half a century.[2] But unless you're a fan of Keystone Kops-style slapstick, they're the filmmaker's least interesting efforts. In fact, Edwards (born William Blake Crump in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 26, 1922) was at his best (co-)writing and/or directing polished comedies (e.g., Operation Petticoat, Victor Victoria) and, less frequently, dramas (Days of Wine and Roses, the romantic comedy-drama Breakfast at Tiffany's). The article below and follow-up posts offer a brief look at some of Blake Edwards' non-Pink Panther comedies,...

Heiress and philanthropist who became a Hollywood star playing poised, upper-class women
There has seldom been more closeness between an acting career and a lifestyle than that of Dina Merrill, who has died aged 93. As an heiress, socialite and philanthropist, Merrill had little trouble portraying upper-crust women in films and television. Her patrician allure led her to be proclaimed “Hollywood’s new Grace Kelly” in 1959. Alas, Merrill was seldom given the chance to shine as much as the star who became a princess. Nevertheless, she had a long career in films from the mid-50s to the mid-60s, and appeared regularly on television from 1955.
Perhaps she was best known on the big screen as Tony Curtis’s love interest in Blake Edwards’ Operation Petticoat (1959). The action comedy starred Cary Grant, who had been married to Merrill’s cousin, the Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton. Almost as celebrated was her role...

On January 22nd of this year I lost someone very close to me. The someone I was closest to, in fact. She was (is) my best friend, my daughter. The love of my life a lot of people say, though this someone wasn’t actually a person. She was better—she was a dog. A nearly 19-year-old Silver Dapple Dachshund named Elizabeth Alaina Freeman, Libby for short. I got her when I was 11 and going through my Queen Elizabeth I phase. I was there when she was born, was the first person she saw when she opened her eyes and the first to hold her. As fate mercifully had it, I was also the last person she saw and the last one to hold her. She died in my arms while I was sleeping. I woke to find her looking at me, eyes unmoving.Last week I turned 30. It was...

Besides making people forever afraid of motel-room showers, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" continues to have an incalculable impact on popular culture. Though it was released 55 years ago this week (on June 16, 1960), it continues to inspire filmmakers and TV producers. In just the last three years, we've seen the 2012 film "Hitchcock" (based on Stephen Rebello's book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of 'Psycho,'" and starring Anthony Hopkins as the director and Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh) and the ongoing A&E TV prequel drama series, "Bates Motel."
Still, for all of the "Psycho" trivia revealed in "Hitchcock," the biopic barely scratches the surface of how the film got made, from the men who inspired the invention of Norman Bates, to the trickery Hitchcock used to tease the press while keeping the film's convention-shredding narrative twists a secret, to the film's unlikely connection to "Leave It to Beaver." Here,...

Their source is one of Rupert Murdoch's rags, citing a Facebook posting by one of the actor's friends. Besides Nicholas Kallsen and Brad Pitt, the show also featured Spike Alexander and Evan Mirand. Glory Days lasted a mere six episodes – two of which directed by former Happy Days actor Anson Williams – before its cancellation. Jeanne Crain: Lighthearted movies vs. real life tragedies (photo: Madeleine Carroll and Jeanne Crain in ‘The Fan’) (See also: "Jeanne Crain: From ‘Pinky’ Inanity to ‘Margie’ Magic.") Unlike her characters in Margie, Home in Indiana, State Fair, Centennial Summer, The Fan, and Cheaper by the Dozen (and its sequel, Belles on Their Toes), or even in the more complex A Letter to Three Wives and People Will Talk, Jeanne Crain didn’t find a romantic Happy Ending in real life. In the mid-’50s, Crain accused her husband, former minor actor Paul Brooks aka Paul Brinkman, of infidelity, of living off her earnings, and of brutally beating her. The couple reportedly were never divorced because of their Catholic faith. (And at least in the ’60s, unlike the humanistic, progressive-thinking Margie, Crain was a “conservative” Republican who supported Richard Nixon.) In the early ’90s, she lost two of her...

Which American actress is richer than Oprah? According to a new list, "Seinfeld" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is worth a whopping $3 billion, beating Oprah by $300 million and becoming the fourth richest celebrity (singers, rappers, actors, models). Louis-Dreyfus didn't earn all that money from her work on "Seinfeld." In fact, most of it comes from her family. But that's not to say that "Seinfeld" didn't make her richer. Both Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David made the list, each being worth $800 million. What's interesting is that Keanu Reeves is worth $350 million, which is more than Will Smith ($200 million) and Bruce Springsteen ($200 million). But that's nothing comparing to the person who took first place, George Lucas, who's worth $7.3 billion, mostly thanks to the sale of "Star Wars" to Disney. Check out the top 50 list below: 1. George Lucas: $7.3 Billion 2. Dina Merrill: $5 Billion 3. Steven Spielberg: $3 Billion 4. Julia Louis-Dreyfus: $3 Billion 5. Oprah Winfrey:...

New York — President John F. Kennedy had just one critique when he saw photos of the actor set to play him in a World War II drama.
The year was 1963 and actor Cliff Robertson looked convincing in his costume for "Pt-109," the first film to portray a sitting president. Kennedy had favored Robertson for the role, but one detail was off.
Robertson's hair was parted on the wrong side.
The actor dutifully trained his locks to part on the left and won praise for a role he'd remain proud of throughout his life.

This vintage Hollywood rom-com, listed as a holiday favorite in Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas, features one of American film's most legendary couples:
When efficiency expert Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) starts sniffing around the research department of the Federal Broadcasting Company TV network, the librarians naturally get suspicious. That department's head, Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn), knows that Sumner is the inventor of an "electronic brain" called Emerac, and she worries that if he installs one of his super-computers, she and research librarians Peg (Joan Blondell), Sylvia (Dina Merrill), and Ruthie (Sue Randall) will all be out of a job.

The actress Blythe Danner can do anything, and in the one-woman play, My Brilliant Divorce by Geraldine Aron, she does: pirouetting, leaping, laughing, singing, sashaying across a bare stage fitted with one large stuffed chair in which she is engulfed like Eloise. Accompanied only by a stuffed dog in a wheeling cart, she recounts the tale of marital loss in a staged reading directed by the playwright and Jim Lawson. This being a comedy, she finds love. The evening of husbands and wives was sponsored by Dina Merrill and Ted Hartley who cheered Danner on along with Bob Balaban and Lynn Grossman, Danner's children Jake Paltrow with Taryn Simon, and daughter Gwyneth with husband Chris Martin of Coldplay. This was one of Guild Hall's stellar summer evenings. The week prior, the shy Barbara Kruger greeted guests at her one-woman show (till...

Dominick Dunne. From PatrickMcMullan.com.Dominick Dunne’s son Griffin told a great story at his father’s funeral, in New York City, yesterday. Griffin said he’d been asked at Frank E. If Dominick was a professional mourner, he was also a professional partygoer, stage manager, and social observer,...

As troubled a period as the 1950s and 1960s were it’s become so fashionable to point this out that it’s easy to forget the vast number of really quality examinations of the business culture produced during the period. A Face In The Crowd and satires like Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter barely scratch the surface. Fans of the social commentary of Rod Serling who penned such powerful commentary on American business culture and personal ambition as Requiem For A Heavyweight and Patterns should go out of their way to catch What Makes Sammy Run? Sammy Glick starts off his corporate career as a copy boy but rises to the top by manipulation and cut throat tactics. Based on Budd Schulbergs highly controversial 1941 novel What Makes Sammy Run?...

One well-respected member of Palm Beach's Old Guard has a grudge against Donald Trump. Stanley Rumbough Jr., a Colgate toothpaste heir and ex-hubby of Dina Merrill (whose parents Marjorie Post and E.F. Hutton built Mar-a-Lago), will never set foot in the landmark estate Trump bought in 1985. Trump, who turned it into a private club, did "the unforgivable by insulting Dina Merrill in one of his innumerable bio graphies . . . [calling her] 'Mrs. Post's arrogant and aloof daughter, who was born with her mother's beauty but not her brains,...
