Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." In recent years, the Academy membership has...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

Other nominees for the top dramatic film honor at the awards known as the Ace/Eddies are “American Sniper,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash.” The category had six nominees instead of five because of a tie.

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) handed out the 2013 Eddie Awards last night and the race didn't change too much, that is unless you were confused as to who the two primary front-runners heading into next Sunday's Oscars were. Argo (edited by William Goldenberg, A.C.E.) and Silver Linings Playbook (edited by Jay Cassidy, A.C.E. and Crispin Struthers) won Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) and Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy/Musical) respectively. Brave won in the Animated category while presumptive Best Documentary winner, Searching for Sugar Man won in the Documentary category. Of course, just to keep things interesting and ensure "Team Lincoln" didn't go home entirely empty handed, Steven Spielberg received the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor presented to him by longtime collaborator and friend Kathleen Kennedy. I've already updated the Oscar Overture with the wins for Argo and Silver Linings as the path...

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees.

Los Angeles — Guided by executive producer John Lasseter, Walt Disney Animation Studios has clearly devoted significant resources and talent to "Wreck-It Ralph," recruiting a top-notch cast and a diverse array of animation, visual effects and lighting artists to contribute to the distinct and varied vid-game styles. With a mix of retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes, the film casts a wide and beguiling net.
Emulating a lo-res `80s video game, "Wreck-It Ralph" envisions the titular character as the short-tempered, sledgehammer-fisted, 600-pound bad guy competing against goody-good nemesis Felix in a game located in Mr. Litwak's (Ed O'Neill) video arcade that's known as "Fix-It Felix Jr." As Ralph (John C. Reilly) tells some fellow evildoers at his first "Bad-Anon" meeting, he's a reluctant villain, tired of always being the culprit who tears down the apartment building inhabited by the Nicelanders who worship Felix (Jack McBrayer) for his superior repair skills.
