- Frank Middlemass, the son of a naval architect, was born in Eaglescliffe, near Stockton. He made his stage debut at the Newcastle Upon Tyne Playhouse in Jesmond after the war then performed in repertory in Penzance and later at London's Old Vic, Bristol, and on a world tour. . - Served with the British Army during World War II and was wounded at Dunkirk. He finished the war with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
