The CW Network today announced that it has reached a comprehensive multi-year agreement with streaming platform YouTube TV to continue carrying its CW-affiliated television stations across the country. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. “We are extremely pleased to have reached agreement to continue carriage of its CW-affiliated stations on YouTube TV, especially as we move forward with our plans to transform The CW with additional sports programming and a new slate of prime-time entertainment shows this Fall,” said Dennis Miller, President of The CW Network. “YouTube TV is an important partner for our affiliates and us, and we look forward to expanding our relationship and growing our audience via this dynamic platform. Max Meyers has at least one firm rule about his new CNBC program, and it might surprise some of the business-news outlet’s die-hards. “I told everyone, ‘No earnings,’” says Meyers, a veteran producer at the NBCUniversal-backed cable network. “I don’t want to hear that.”
No net income on CNBC? Such a dictate would be anathema on “Squawk Box,” the morning-news program that Meyers previously ran, but it might just stick on “Last Call,” a new 7 p.m. effort from CNBC executives that aims to keep business-news aficionados hanging out with the network until later in the evening. Over the past week, anchor Brian Sullivan, who is moving from a 5 a.m. roost on “Worldwide Exchange” to anchor the new evening show, has held forth on everything from Tesla to Salesforce during rehearsals, ready to give late-breaking news to CNBC’s market faithful.

Updated: Using data from iSpotTV along with internal CW and Liv results, CW says Liv’s opening weekend at Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Course in Mexico averaged more than 3.2 million total viewers across all linear and digital platforms from February 24-26.
Day one of the tourney streamed on the CW app. Days two and three aired on affiliates, as well as indie stations and diginets.
“This was a great start for Liv Golf and a great debut for CW Sports,” said Dennis Miller, President of The CW Network. “We are really encouraged by the dramatic viewership increases we saw across our affiliates. The performance of Liv Golf is very competitive with other longstanding sports leagues, and we are confident that the audience for the league will continue growing throughout the season, as The CW delivers high quality sports programming to our broadcasting and advertising partners for the first time.”

Walker Independence will wrap up its freshman run with this Thursday’s finale, but it remains to be seen whether the episode will be the final one to air on The CW following much turnover at the network.
In August 2022, local-tv giant Nexstar Media Group acquired majority ownership of The CW, after which network boss Mark Pedowitz exited and was replaced by TV executive-turned-venture capitalist Dennis Miller. Nexstar execs indicated that the plan for The CW’s future includes targeting older viewers and a focus on low-cost unscripted programming. Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said the company’s acquisition of the CW has already paid for itself in terms of adding muscle to the company’s distribution negotiations.
The exec made the comment at the start of Nexstar’s fourth-quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts. Earlier, Nexstar reported a 45% surge in advertising revenue during the election-fueled quarter. Total revenue of $1.486 billion climbed 19% from the year-earlier period, but came in just shy of analysts’ consensus forecast for $1.5 billion. Adjusted Ebitda of $598.2 million rose 20%.
“It was all part of the thinking,” Sook said of the decision to take over the CW. The network “was undervalued for any number of reasons,” including the “company priorities and agendas” of its prior owners. Given that Nexstar operates the largest portfolio of local TV stations in the country, “when we are negotiating with the Big 4 station groups, there is leverage inherent in that model.” As...

Earlier this month, The CW proudly trumpeted how the 2023 Liv Golf League season will air in 100% of markets across the U.S. The 14-event schedule kicks off Friday at the El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Course in Mexico, with the CW app streaming coverage on Fridays and linear CW broadcast picking up on Saturdays and Sundays.
What was missing from the surprise announcement last week was the list of CW affiliates that declined to air the Saudi-funded tour that has deeply divided professional golf. The CW, in its latest shift away from scripted originals, is dismantling its current programming department.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that exec vp current programming Michael Roberts and exec vp development Gaye Hirsch — two of The CW’s remaining most important scripted executives — are among those who were let go Thursday. An exact headcount was not immediately available, though sources say others were impacted by the layoffs.
While losing the heads of current and development are a big blow to The CW’s efforts to continue making scripted originals, this is not a complete dismantling of its scripted executives as sources say some lower-level staffers — i.e., those with smaller salaries — are being retained.
Reps for The CW did not respond to THR’s multiple requests for comment.

As A Little Prayer begins, the voice of an unseen singer floats into the still morning air of a strikingly leafy neighborhood. The spirituals she belts, heard a few times during this quiet drama, take on the role of a disembodied character, sparking responses from the other characters that help to define who they are. Some hear only noise, an intrusion, something to complain about. But for Bill and his daughter-in-law, Tammy, searching souls beautifully played by David Strathairn and Jane Levy, the songs are enchanting, a mystery to savor.
Bill and Tammy are, as she puts it, kindred spirits, but that’s not to say they’re fully in sync. Their bond is the heart of writer-director Angus MacLachlan’s understated film, yet so too is the gap between what Bill wants to believe and the way things are. ‘A Little Prayer’ Review: David Strathairn Shines as Conflicted Patriarch in Thoughtful Family Drama
In the right role, David Straithairn is one of those actors as inescapably real as your morning bedhead, the creak in your floorboards and the seasoning of a thousand meals coating your cast-iron skillet.
In the right role, he’s almost a centralizing force of authenticity, which is certainly the case with writer-director Angus MacLachalan’s wonderful, heartfelt “A Little Prayer,” a small-scale family drama about the anxiety that arises when children aren’t children anymore and parenting becomes a consciously risky meddling.
MacLachalan, best known for writing the lived-in Southern charmer “Junebug,” is on his third go-round directing one of his unflashy, breezily thorny character studies built on details of sincerity, agitation and humor in families. Here, he’s inside three generations of a North Carolina clan with a sheet-metal business, marked by a father and son who have been to war, and women who have a lot on...

However, diversity is significantly reduced. No Red, no Blackmagic, and no mirrorless. That’s unfortunate.

Liv Golf, a professional tour that launched last year with backing from the government of Saudi Arabia, has finally landed a U.S. TV deal.
The tour signed a multi-year pact with the CW, helping the broadcast network move closer toward its goal of delivering more live sports. Nexstar Media Group acquired majority control of the CW last year, with former 50-50 partners Paramount Global and Warner Bros Discovery each retaining 12.5 stakes.
The exclusive rights deal starts with the 2023 Liv season. The CW will air 14 of the tour’s events on weekends in 2023 and will stream them live on the CW app, including on Fridays. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the rights process was hampered by the PGA’s strong ties with major media companies like NBCUniversal and Paramount, parent of CBS. The CW, long known for TV series like “Gossip Girl” or “Arrow” that skew toward younger audiences, is taking a swing for older crowds.
The broadcast network, recently put under the majority control of large TV-station owner Nexstar Media, has struck a multi-year rights deal with Liv Golf, the upstart league financed by Saudi Arabia. Under terms of the deal, the CW will air 14 global Liv Golf League live events in 2023 and will stream the events live on its app. Weekend tournaments will air live on Saturdays and Sundays on the linear network, and stream online Fridays.
The agreement brings live sports broadcasting for the first time to a network that never relied upon it. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The CW is officially getting into the Liv Golf business.
The Nexstar-owned broadcast network has signed a multi-year deal with the startup golf association, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Under the terms of the deal The CW will air 14 Liv Golf events in 2023, beginning with a tournament to be held in Mexico Feb. 24-26. The tournaments will air live on The CW and stream on the CW app on Saturdays and Sundays, with the Friday matches streaming on the app.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the two sides were “very close” to a deal.
Notably, Liv Golf will continue to produce its own event coverage for the 2023 tournament season (it produced the 2022 season, which it streamed on its YouTube channel). Arlo White will return as play-by-play host with David Feherty and Jerry Foltz serving as analysts.

It’s somewhat hard to believe, but Adam Sandler — the guest on this edition of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in late 2022 in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sandler received the fest’s performance of the year award — has been a star for more than 30 years now.
Hired as a writer on Saturday Night Live in 1990, the Brooklyn-born comedian soon began appearing in his own sketches and won over audiences with his madcap man-child characters. He then transitioned to a film career, co-writing and starring in movies about lovable losers who win the day, like 1995’s Billy Madison, 1996’s Happy Gilmore and 1998’s The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.
While Sandler, now 56, has continued to consistently pump out unabashedly goofy comedies to which audiences have flocked, he has also, with increasing frequency, taken aback critics by deploying serious acting...

Exclusive: Before Nexstar appointed former Pop TV boss Brad Schwartz as President of Entertainment at The CW earlier this month, there was much talk that the network would bulk up its unscripted slate.
The new owners have not shied away from their desire to find cheaper sources of programming and there was a suggestion that new CW president Dennis Miller was also looking for an unscripted exec to lead such a charge.
This search, Deadline understands, has now begun in earnest.
We hear that Miller has begun drawing up a shortlist of candidates that he would like to hire following the appointment of Schwartz, who is best known for bringing Emmy-winning comedy series Schitt’s Creek to the U.S.
It’s very early days but it signals the importance of alternative programming to the network, which has dabbled in the genre successfully over the years, but never put it...

Nexstar Media Group, which has long been known for its enviable balance sheet and knack for finding ways to economize, plans to fund its investment in The CW with proceeds from its sale of a Chicago property to a casino developer.
While the company’s drive to wring profits out of The CW and also its pending sale of the Freedom Center have both been publicly disclosed, the dots were connected by CFO Lee Ann Gliha today at a conference hosted by investment firm Stephens. Nexstar President and COO Tom Carter also took part in the conference session.
Nexstar closed its acquisition of 75 of The CW last month, paying nothing up front but agreeing to take on the network’s debt and absorb its losses. Previous 50-50 partners Paramount Global and Warner Bros Discovery retained 12.5 stakes apiece. The money-losing network is expected to undergo a dramatic overhaul as Nexstar seeks...

Like many other TV anchors at business-news outlet CNBC, Shepard Smith finds himself facing a closing bell.
The veteran journalist, who arrived at the NBCUniversal venue in the fall of 2020 with a mission to grow the network’s audience in early evening with a non-partisan general-news program, will leave CNBC as it focuses more intently on its core product: information tailored for viewers interested in the markets and personal finance.
Smith’s last show will air later in November, and CNBC intends to replace his program, “The News with Shepard Smith,” with an evening hour devoted to business news in early 2023. The anchors for that program will be named at a later date, and it remains to be seen whether CNBC will select candidates from among its current roster or seek to woon someone from outside its ranks.

As Nexstar announced Wednesday morning, former Pop TV president Brad Schwartz is returning to the network executive ranks as President of Entertainment at The CW. Reporting to new CW president Dennis Miller, he will be starting at the network in two weeks as he winds down his current role as CEO of The Capra Project, a startup entertainment venture focused on “authentic stories of family, faith, joy and hope” which was launched last year with investment from Lionsgate, UTA, Blumhouse and Tyler Perry.
For Schwartz, who started his executive career in his native Canada as SVP & Gm, The Much MTV Group before coming to the U.S. for stints as SVP Programming at Fuse and then president of Pop, this marks a return to The CW where he consulted for 10 months in 2020-21 on acquisitions (linear and digital) and on ways to further the network’s AVOD strategy. The Winchesters and Walker: Independence won't be getting additional episode orders for their inaugural seasons. There will be just 13 episodes of each. The Winchesters currently airs on Tuesday nights, and Walker: Independence airs on Thursdays.
Are the lack of full-season orders a sign that the dramas will be cancelled? It's unclear what the future of any original CW series will be, given the recent acquisition by Nexstar Media Group. Deadline revealed that network head Dennis Miller has stressed to producers and the series' stars that no decisions about next season have been made.

Four episodes into its debut season, "The Winchesters" was starting to feel too good to be true. The idea of The CW's 15-season behemoth "Supernatural" getting a spinoff was always a daunting prospect — after all, they've tried this many times before. While prior attempts never made it past their backdoor pilots, "The Winchesters" quickly got the go-ahead for a 13-episode season (plus the possibility of a full 22-episode order). But even when the show finally started hitting the airwaves, fans were plenty skeptical of the "Supernatural" prequel.
Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (voiced by Jensen Ackles), "The Winchesters" is the story of how his and Sam's parents fell in love and saved the world — a story that was already partially told by the Og series. So why craft an entire prequel around a romance we've already seen play out? I still don't have an answer for that,...

Brad Schwartz has been officially named as President, CW Entertainment.
This comes less than a day after Deadline revealed that he was the main candidate for the top programming role following Nexstar’s acquisition of the network.
Former Pop TV chief Schwartz will be responsible for programming strategy, creative and brand development, and day-to-day operations of The CW Network.
He will report to Dennis Miller, President, The CW Network.
As Deadline said yesterday, Schwartz, the man behind Pop TV’s Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek, makes sense to lead the new look CW, which will have an increasing focus on unscripted shows and fewer, cheaper scripted series.
Miller said that one of the reasons he was hired was because he knows “how to develop and acquire hits with limited resources, nurture talent, and broaden the appeal of diverse media assets”.

All Brad Schwartz has to do now is find the next version of the types of things he’s discovered in the past: a new “Schitt’s Creek, the next Billy Eichner or the next smart revival of fondly-remembered favorites like “One Day At a Time” or “Degrassi Junior High.”
Easy, right? He will have ample time to seek out such properties as the new president of entertainment for the CW Network, recently placed under the control of Nexstar Media Group, which has ambitions of weaning the network off of the revenue its shows generate from outside streamers and building up a cash flow all its own. Schwartz will start in his new role on November 7, and report to Dennis Miller, president of the overall network.

Not counting the series that are officially ending this season, the oldest scripted series on the air at the CW is flagship All American, currently in its fifth season. All other shows are three-years-old or younger. That is significant as series tend to get more expensive as they age.
And, as the new owners of the CW, Texas-based Nexstar Media Group, have demonstrated, cutting costs is a key element of their plan to make the independent TV network profitable, which involves reducing the volume and price tag of original scripted series and ramping up cost-effective unscripted fare.
As part of the cost-cutting efforts, I hear Nexstar executives have been looking to restructure the agreements with the CW’s current scripted series suppliers, CBS Studios and Warner Bros. The Winchesters and Walker: Independence won’t receive an additional episode order for their first seasons, as the future of The CW remains in flux. Both seasons will remain at the original 13 episodes. According to Deadline, the CW was hit with dozens of layoffs on Tuesday, November 1, and “a significant reduction in expenses will be a centerpiece of the new owner’s turnaround plan.” Season 2 renewals for both The Winchesters and Walker: Independence are still a possibility, but the Nexstar-appointed president Dennis Miller has decided against backorder for any first-year CW series. Nexstar Media has 75 percent ownership of The CW. The Winchesters and Walker: Independence aren’t the only series with futures up in the air, with returning series All American, All American: Homecoming, Superman & Lois, and Kung Fu all awaiting renewal. DC’s Stargirl, Riverdale, Nancy Drew, and The Flash are all coming to an end at the CW this 2022-2023 season.

Exclusive: The new iteration of The CW is starting to take shape.
Two and a half months after Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in the broadcaster, the new owners are starting to make moves that will determine its programming mix and who will be leading this charge.
Chief among these include the search for a top programming executive, a re-tooling of its scripted lineup and a drive to greenlight more unscripted formats.
This comes after a major round of layoffs at the company as well as the departure of long-term execs such as streaming and branding chief Rick Haskins, ad chief Mitch Nedick and comms chief Paul Hewitt.
Earlier this month, Dennis Miller was named President of The CW Network, replacing Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz. Deadline understands that he has been leading a search for a programming boss with executives such as former Pop TV boss Brad Schwartz...

Roughly 30-40 employees of The CW were laid off on Tuesday by new owner Nexstar Media, IndieWire has learned.
The move is the first large scale overhaul at the CW after Nexstar, the largest television-station owner in the United States, took control of the channel’s operation on October 3. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, The CW’s previous owners, sold a majority of their unprofitable joint venture to Nexstar in June.
Among those laid off on Tuesday were Paul Hewitt, the CW communications chief since it formed from the merger of Upn with The WB in 2006. Less than a month after Nexstar Media closed a deal to take 75 ownership of The CW, the broadcast network has been hit with dozens of layoffs.
The exact number of departures is still becoming clear, but one person with knowledge of the situation pegged it at about 30 to 40. While Nexstar is known for local stations, the company also operates NewsNation, which it overhauled and reformatted from its prior incarnation, WGN America, after acquiring Tribune Media in 2019. The lower cost profile of news programming, a distinctly different neighborhood from the scripted fare that briefly was Wgna’s specialty, was the driving motivation of the makeover.

PR chief Paul Hewitt has exited the CW after 22 years amid dozens of layoffs at the network, an individual with knowledge confirmed to TheWrap.
Beth Feldman, a former partner at Beyond PR Group, has been tapped by Nexstar to replace Hewitt, effectively immediately.
Hewitt’s exit — and the layoffs — join a slew of sweeping changes to the network under the control of Nexstar, most notably replacing CW CEO Mark Pedowitz with current president Dennis Miller, a former board member.
Beginning his career at Fox Entertainment’s research and marketing department, Hewitt worked his way up to the network’s senior vice president of network communication, overseeing all communications strategies, media relations and internal communications. The publicity executive worked at Upn when the company merged with The WB Network in 2006, and oversaw the launch of The CW as the vice president of corporate communications.

Nexstar has named Beyond PR Group partner Beth Feldman the senior vice president of network communications at The CW, replacing Paul Hewitt, the longtime comms chief at the younger-skewing broadcaster.
Feldman will oversee internal and external communication and program publicity effective immediately, taking over for Hewitt — who is leaving the network after 22 years, first at Upn before it merged with the WB to create The CW in 2006 — in the wake of Nexstar’s majority acquisition of the channel.
Hewitt’s exit comes on the heels of longtime CW president Mark Pedowitz being ousted upon the close of Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery’s sale of the network to Nexstar in October.
In a statement about his exit, Hewitt said: “For the past 20 years, I have been incredibly fortunate to have played a role, albeit a small one, in helping shape, influence and even define popular culture with the series...
