George Trumbull Miller, the director of The Man From Snowy River and The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, has died of a heart attack. He was 79.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported the news of the Australian filmmaker’s death on Saturday. No details of the day he died have been shared at this time.
Miller rose to prominence in the 1980s with his massive hit The Man From Snowy River, starring Kirk Douglas. To this day, the Western still has a place on Australia’s list of top 20 grossing films of all time in unadjusted terms. It made 17.2 million locally then, which equals about 68 million in today’s world.
After becoming one of his home country’s most commercially successful filmmakers, the Scottish-born director made his way to Hollywood, where he helmed The NeverEnding Story II, Christmas movie In the Nick of Time and family movie Zeus and Roxanne,...

The Movie: "Private Benjamin" (1980)
Where You Can Stream It: Showtime
The Pitch: Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) has dreamed of one thing since she was eight years old, according to the film's opening title card: essentially, to be a wife. Specifically, "All I want [...] is a big house ... nice clothes, two closets, a live-in maid, and a professional man for a husband." "Private Benjamin" starts by giving Judy everything she's ever wanted, starting with a huge wedding to a professional man named Yale Goodman (played perfunctorily by Albert Brooks), who promptly dies while consummating their marriage later that same night.
Judy was a divorcée (she was previously married at 20) and widow by the age of 28. Her family didn't know what to do with her,...

Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Nancy Meyers is the writer many of us aspire to be – her scripts walk the line of blending challenging ideas with comedic situations, dramatic themes with hard jokes,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Her work consistently proves that movies about the foibles and frailties of humans will be commercially successful in the hands of a master of her craft. The Wgaw Board of Directors is thrilled to give her this award.

When I played Ether One, developer White Paper Games’ debut mystery-puzzle-walking-simulator experience, it was just a free game on PlayStation Plus that I downloaded on a whim. As I made my way through the world, I was struck by how minimal everything was, yet it still managed to be affecting. I had no clue what I was doing, no idea what my purpose was in this world, but I kept moving forward all the same, compelled by the clever puzzles and the underlying sense that the game would continue to exist regardless if the player was there.
I never finished Ether One, but I am forever thankful I chose to play it. Since then, White Paper Games has been a permanent fixture on my radar. When I looked at the slate of games set to release this month, The Occupation was high on my list. Again, I had a small...

Feig most recently wrote, directed, and produced last year’s comedy “Spy” starring Melissa McCarthy. “The Heat” and “Bridesmaids” are among the director’s other credits. Feig helms this summer’s “Ghostbusters” reboot from a script he co-wrote with Kate Dippold. Meyers is set to receive the Distinguished Screenwriter Award from the fest. Marking new British director Rowan Athale’s feature directorial debut, The Rise premiered to the world out in Toronto last year – then screening under the name Wasteland – to promising early reviews.
The crime-thriller has been pegged as one of the best British movies of the year, and we’ve got the new UK quad poster to share with you before it arrives on our shores next month.

An inexperienced cast and crew try to rush this atmospheric heist flick and the result is a visually striking film noir that runs out of gas. Primed and pumped up for that next cruel and gritty, dark and dirty, “The world is no damned good” noir mystery thriller, you are a bit taken aback when the lead character, Harvey Miller (Luke Treadaway), shows up on the screen. There are two problems. The first is that Luke looks too good and the second is that Harvey looks too bad. Harvey has just been beaten up by bad guys unknown and is being interrogated in the police station by Detective Inspector West (played to perfection, at least as far as the...

"Nods to The Usual Suspects and the Oceans franchise." That critic's quote should be enough to pique your interest, but the rest of the trailer is pretty good, too. Today's trailer is for a UK heist film titled Wasteland which first premiered up at Tiff last year. It stars "hot" British actor Luke Treadaway, seen in Attack the Block & Clash of the Titans, who leads a group of friends in a robbery of the local kingpin. This looks like a polished, entertaining heist thriller on top of a good revenge flick, I'm curious to check it out even though I missed it at the festivals. The cast includes Matthew Lewis, Iwan Rheon, Vanessa Kirby and Timothy Spall. Watch the theatrical trailer for Rowan Athale's Wasteland, also in high def from Apple: After being released from prison for a crime he didn't commit, Harvey Miller (Luke Treadaway) has revenge on his mind.

If the movies are indication, Britain is completely crammed with wise-taking criminals, scheming together to rob banks and beat people up and look fantastic doing it. And the latest addition to the wave of British crime films is Wasteland, coming from Oscilloscope Laboratories both on VOD and in theaters in New York and Los Angeles today. You can also watch it online today in any number of places, including iTunes, Amazon, Vudu and Google Play. In this clip you can see our hero Harvey Miller, played by Luke Treadaway, attempting to make a move on a girl in a club, played by Vanessa Kirby. Turns out the entire scene isn't really what it seems-- she's actually his ex, seeing him for the first time since he went to prison. That's right, this kid may look like your classic awkward goofball in this situation, but Harvey's been recently released from prison,...

Every six months or so it seems the British film industry cranks out another modestly budgeted crime flick. Usually identified by a cast of recognizable but not quite famous faces, a desaturated color scheme, working class setting and familiar plot machinations, these are comfort food for genre fans that provide a distraction for a couple of hours and little else more. However, every now and then a film breaks out of the mould, offering up a higher standard of filmmaking verve and storytelling inspiration to become something that stretches beyond its genre trappings. "Wasteland" is not one of those movies. Starring Luke Treadaway ("Attack The Block," "Clash Of The Titans") and Timothy Spall (for most folks, a Hey-It's-That-Guy from numerous movies) and written and directed by Rowan Athale making his feature debut, the set-up doesn't get much simpler (and sort of absurd) than this. The film is told through flashback...

Waste of Time: Glossy Heist Fantasy a Missed Hit for Athale’s Debut
Producer Rowan Athale’s directorial debut, Wasteland, which he also penned, gets out of the gate like an excitable new race horse, overly assured, cocky, and with people betting it’s a sure kinda thing. But then you quickly realize that this is indeed his first time at the rodeo, his film debut so out of breathe and knees buckling before completing the first lap that we have to do everything in our power to stay with it till the finish line. If this analogy doesn’t give it away, director Athale has created a product grossly over-styled, a derivative amalgamation of heist genre classics, all the while bearing an excessively smug grin.

Not to be confused with the Oscar-nominated documentary of the same name a few years ago, Wasteland is a British heist film that’s set to premiere at Tiff tomorrow. Both Luke Treadaway and Matthew Lewis are on display in much grittier roles than their previous Attack the Block and Harry Potter films, respectively.
Directed by Rowan Athale, the film’s structure shows our lead being caught by the cops, only to have it flashback to the heist that they just attempted. It looks like a tense, fun thriller and as we saw with Treadaway’s creature feature, crime is just better with UK accents, isn’t it? Check out the trailer below via Collider for the film being compared to Ocean’s Eleven and The Usual Suspects, which also stars Iwan Rheon, Gerard Kearns, Timothy Spall, Vanessa Kirbya and Neil Maskell.

British crime-thriller is one of the final films to be added to the Tiff line-up this week, and with the addition comes four new images from the film, giving us a look at its leading stars, with Luke Treadaway (Attack the Block) particularly battered and bruised in one.

Anna Faris has just landed the role that made Goldie Hawn a superstar! The house bunny will be called up to duty for New Line's remake of "Private Benjamin!"
In the 1980 film, Hawn played a spoiled woman who joins the army after her husband dies during sex on their wedding night. The film was nominated for three Oscars including Hawn for best actress, Eileen Brennan for best supporting actress, and best original screenplay for Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer, and Harvey Miller.
The original was rated R and the rating gave the filmmakers enough leeway to create a thoroughly engrossing film. Given the current economic state of Hollywood, you wanna bet that the remake will be PG-13 for wider audience?
But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake "will set the story in contemporary times with modern wars as the backdrop. Insiders say the studio doesn.t want to poke fun...

It looks like Goldie Hawn is the key to a new trend in remakes. Not only did we recently learn that Jennifer Lopez is moving in on a remake of the romantic comedy Overboard, but now Risky Biz reports New Line is looking to remake the 1980 comedy Private Benjamin with Anna Faris starring. Amy Talkington (that sounds like a made up name) is in line to write the script which will be a new take on the story of a spoiled woman who joins the Army after her husband dies during sex on their wedding night.
