About two and a half years have gone by since it was announced that Jordan Peele would be producing a remake of Wes Craven‘s 1991 film The People Under the Stairs (watch it Here) – but while we wait to see if that announcement is going to lead anywhere, Scream Factory is set to give Craven’s film a 4K Uhd release on May 23rd. Last week, we posted a list of five forgotten actors we’d like to see make a comeback, and the reaction was so strong, we decided to post a bunch more! There’s a ton of forgotten actors from the 80s and 90s we’d love to have back on our screen, so let’s take a look at another group of them today.
Kelly Jo Minter
Let’s start with a horror favorite and a regular presence on the convention circuit, Kelly Jo Minter. Most folks will remember her from A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, The People Under the Stairs, and a slew of television series appearances. She was everywhere for a while in the 1980s and 1990s, then projects started becoming further and further apart, with nothing between 2008 and 2019, then nothing since. This actress is beloved by many people, and she should get a new part,...

It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 1991 slasher that had a rather troubled production but still managed to gain a solid cult following. The movie is Popcorn (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.
Directed by Mark Herrier, Popcorn has the following synopsis:
What could be scarier than an all-night “Horrorthon”? A group of film students finds out when they stage just such an event at an abandoned movie palace. In addition to the three features — Mosquito, The Attack Of The Amazing Electrified Man and The Stench — they decide to screen a bizarre short called The Possessor, whose creator, Lanyard Gates, killed his family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. Maggie has been having frightening dreams...

For all of its wonderful jump-scares and nail-biting suspense, the scariest thing about Wes Craven’s “The People Under the Stairs,” which I starred in as The Stairmaster 30 years ago, may be that this kind of horror film — a progressive and diverse movie that starred a young African-American kid as the hero and heart of the story — is still the exception rather than the rule in Hollywood in 2021.
To say that Wes Craven was ahead of his time when he made the Universal Studios cult-horror classic back in 1991 would be a huge understatement: Wes was an innovative, forward-thinking director who was on the right side of social issues and social justice. He held up a (much-needed) light to important social issues and made a political statement through the art of horror without seeming too overt. He brilliantly cast a diverse and talented ensemble and tackled issues that were ripped from...

Sometimes it’s hard to remember people by their names and easier by appearance, but with Kelly Jo Minter it’s difficult for some folks to remember her from certain roles since her appearance has changed over the years. One might think that her name sounds familiar and could possibly pick her out according to one movie or TV appearance, but again, her appearance has changed enough to make it difficult to realize that she is the same person that you might have seen in the past. She definitely looked different as a younger woman when she was taking on various roles

As genre fans, we are truly lucky to be living in a day and age where we can enjoy a variety of incredible film projects that celebrate nearly every aspect that we love about horror. Sometimes, these documentaries are focused on a specific film or a franchise, sometimes they hone in on one director or actor in particular. But with Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, director Xavier Burgin has crafted an 83-minute journey spanning over an entire century of filmmaking that not only celebrates the milestones, but also holds Hollywood and society as a whole responsible for how black culture has been represented in cinema, as well as lauding the achievements of black creatives who have helped pave the way for future generations throughout their careers.

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller, and the supernatural, has announced the upcoming premiere of its first original documentary feature, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. Based on the acclaimed book of the same name by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman, Horror Noire takes a critical look at a century of genre films that by turns utilized, caricatured, exploited, sidelined, and embraced both black filmmakers and black audiences.
Dr. Coleman joined Texas A&M University in 2018 as new Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity.
The film features in-depth interviews with noted directors, writers, and actors, including Ernest Dickerson (Bones), Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), Jordan Peele (Us), Tina Mabry (Mississippi Damned), Tony Todd (Candyman), Paula Jai Parker (Tales from the Hood), Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep), and Dr. Robin R. Like with any long-running slasher movie franchise, every horror fan has a favorite Nightmare on Elm Street sequel when asked. The most popular response is Dream Warriors, which, based on anecdotal evidence, many fans prefer even to the first film. Some like its follow-up, the Renny Harlin-directed The Dream Master, best. Very rarely, if ever, do Nightmare fans name the fifth installment, 1989’s The Dream Child, as their favorite. It’s the unloved orphan of the franchise, lacking even the novelty of Freddy’s Dead with its 3-D climax and the fact that it’s designed to end the series for good (even if Wes Craven’s New Nightmare would render said closure impotent just a few years later). For many, The Dream Child represents the franchise overstaying its welcome for one film too many before wrapping up. And, yes, the movie has its share of problems both in...

Wes Craven’s best films are all driven by ideas, whether it’s a boogeyman who can kill you in your sleep or that same fictional boogeyman gaining real-world power from our collective fear. When those ideas combined with politics or social issues, the results were Craven’s rare “message” movies — raw nerves transformed into horror films as a way for the filmmaker to express his outrage. 1991’s The People Under the Stairs is Craven’s first real “message” movie since the one-two punch of The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes. It’s also one of his most underrated.
Less a horror film than it is a pitch black comedy, The People Under the Stairs is Wes Craven’s most overtly political film. There’s nothing apologetic about it and, like Joe Dante would later do in Homecoming, Craven has something he wants to say...

Throughout a very prolific and sometimes uneven career as an incredibly notable genre filmmaker, Wes Craven’s aesthetic often grapples with issues of revenge and adolescence, having given birth to the iconic The Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises, both series exploring notions of metatextual reinvention. Cutting his teeth with grindhouse horror titles that have since been re-made, many of his more obscure offerings have languished in the critical realm of inconsequential desolation. But it’s his 1991 offering The People Under the Stairs which is worthy of reappraisal, arguably the filmmaker’s best and most bizarre work. Campy, hysterical, creepy, and replete with a socially conscious message, it’s an early 90s cult classic that retains its power to delight and weird out.

In every neighbourhood there is one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid… “Fool” may be a streetwise kid, but he makes a decidedly bad decision when he agrees to assist a family friend in the robbery of their landlord’s imposing homestead. What begins as a routine break-in soon begins to take a sinister turn as the would-be robbers find themselves trapped inside and face-to-face with the terrible secrets which lurk within the building’s walls – and under the stairs.

Popcorn (1991) Raise your hand if you are a fan of the 1991 slasher "Popcorn" starring genre vets Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather), Dee Wallace (The Howling), Derek Rydall (Night Visitor) and Kelly Jo Minter (Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child). If you're a fan of the movie, like myself, then get ready for a potential celebration as a fan of the movie is actively trying to bring the film back out to the masses with an array of all new special features in a deluxe DVD edition.
Back when I was a kid, I remember being enticed by the TV spots for a new slasher film coming out entitled Popcorn. I waited in anticipation of the film, but it never arrived at my local theater. Finally, I caught the film one late night on Cinemax and instantly fell in love with it. I loved the homage to horror films of the past.
